His exasperated gaze met with his colleague’s, and an audible groan seeped out of his lips. Ugh, she must have been one of those ‘Christmas Spirit’ kind of people. He felt the sides of his head burn. He couldn’t care less if Santa showed up or not, either way, he was certain he wasn’t going to have a good time, whether he was arguing with snobby, middle-aged parents, or forced to tell kids to smile for pictures–even though half the time they’d be crying in the old man’s lap. It was all a pile of steaming crap he couldn’t care less about.

“Christmas, ruined?” he snorted out with a chuckle, “Chica, it’s been ruined since it started.”

Sapphire wasn’t going to relent on this. She could remember many…many years when she was just a kid when Christmas was around the corner. And all the pretty decorations were thrown around the shopping centers with the peppy Christmas music. It was her favorite time of year, and she could see that this guy wasn’t exactly somebody who enjoyed the holidays. But that wasn’t going to stop her, not one bit.

She squinted, crossing her arms. “Ruined since it started for you maybe. But not for them. I don’t know who ruined such a great holiday for you…” She puffed her cheeks, peeking over at the cranky parents. She didn’t like those sorts of people, the ones who did nothing but complain about something…but it was the kids that really made Christmas worth it. They always looked so happy…and she didn’t want it to go down like this.

Sapphire adjusted the little elf hat she was wearing, playing with the bell on it. There had to be something…they could do. And the Grinch over there wasn’t helping at all. At his hand flicking, she only squinted more. And now that she was looking at him as he spoke…it gave her an idea. Her squinting blue eyes turned a bit mischievous, a dangerous twinkle that began to spark. “I don’t know…I think there’s somebody just perfect. Disappointing kids just before Christmas is awful. And I’m not going to stop. Besides, you’d fit just perfect for a grumpy old fat man. Maybe you just need somebody to show you why Christmas is special!”

     Well, he certainly didn’t expect an immediate agreement after asking, but he’ll take it. No sense worrying over it, right ?? After all, he wouldn’t have to throw away the extra ticket anymore. Though he probably would have just kept it as a memento of this lucky day or something.

“Huh? You know I never thought of that and the promoter didn’t even tell me anything about it. Um … hold on,” he said, quickly scanning over the ticket in his hand. The barest of explanations were written on the ticket, though as a promo, they didn’t want to give away too much. That meant he only knew it would be a reality survival game of some sort that required a partner … which wasn’t a lot to go by.

“How good are you at survival games ?? We might need to outrun potential enemies and protect ourselves from any other dangers they might throw at us. I mean, those would only be a few of what we’d face.” And he was already trying to assess what they’ll be going through … without the common decency to at least introduce himself to his potential partner before everything.

Sapphire listened intently on his explanation, already getting super excited on this new weird adventure she got asked to join. Survival was her middle name, well it was close enough. After all the nights she had spent scaling mountains and camping in the jungle, training in a variety of places that only insane people would go, she was well prepared for anything that was thrown at her.

Tapping her finger to her chin, she hummed a little bit. It was nothing she couldn’t handle from the sounds of it, and she was glad she agreed. Smiling and laughing a little bit, she put her hand on her hip. “Yeah that sounds awesome! I’ve spent a long time in the mountains and jungles, camping and training and stuff. So don’t worry too much about me! I’ll be just fine!”

She paused, taking another look at him. He looked like somebody who trained some pretty strong Pokemon, so that was good too. “I’m Sapphire by the way, nice to be working with you!”

If there was one thing that Sapphire loved alot, it was Christmas. It was only a once a year special time for people to see family and have a huge dinner and exchange gifts and catch up on everything that was happening. And this year she got roped into being an elf of all things. It was probably because she was literally elf sized, and she almost threatened to punch at least three different people that day.

But today was not off to a good start for anybody involved, because the main man Santa never showed up for his job. And with the growing line of people slowly getting angry and antsy...she was starting to lose her cool too. It wasn’t like this was their fault or anything. They weren’t the ones doing this. Whoever Santa was...was going to be in BIG TROUBLE. Nobody disappointed kids on Christmas...not like this. It was unacceptable!

The small brunette looked up to the guy who had been arguing with some family man for a while now, and she decided to stick her nose in business where it shouldn’t be...as she did a lot. And when her colleague wasn’t doing anything to fix the situation, she absolutely was going to step in.

“So I know this looks bad, but we’re working on it I promise!” She couldn’t bear to see kids disappointed like that...she would be heartbroken as a kid to know that Santa never showed up that year. It would be devastating. Taking quick action, she leaped over to the other counter, pulling the guy down with her. “Okay, we need to do something because I am NOT going to let some idiot who never bothered to show up to be Santa ruin these kids’ holiday! We have to find a new Santa...right now. Because I refuse to let Christmas get ruined like this! It’s so important to those kids...”

“Yeah? Go file a complaint then, Doris! Askin’ me where he is five times in three minutes ain’t gonna make him show up faster!”

“And tell your ain’t-shit ass husband he sucks at golf too!”

A small red box with green ribbons to hold the lid is addressed to Sapphire. Though the appearance is simple, the inside is stuffed, almost overflowing with soft blue and red cotton- there are glitters mixed in as well. In the center are two pale green hair pins- a small note behind it that read: "From your secret santa! I know this gift will find you, even if it travels over seas. Merry Christmas~!"

Sapphire was...a little confused to find something at her house with her parents when she visited out of the blue. Her mom had held it for her, and she looked it over before taking a stab at opening it. She produced some of the most beautiful cotton she’d ever seen, and hair pins too! Those would be perfect to keep her hair out of her face while she was hiking and training!

“Wow! This is awesome! I can use this while I’m out roaming!” She put the hair pins in her hair, already loving how they fit. These were amazing! And she could definitely take use of the sparkly cotton too! “Thanks Santa! Merry Christmas to you too! I’ll use it all I promise!”

Wallace was incredibly bored. There was nothing to do that day — no new challengers to face, no new sights to see (he lived in Sootopolis, what else was there to see?) and most importantly…there was just nothing to do.

He decided to entertain himself by sliding across the puzzles in the gym, slowly but surely making his way to the front. In the distance, the door opened, but there was silence. He continued on.

Suddenly, a familiar voice called out to him, and he stopped completely, turning to listen.

“Hey, Wallace? It’s me, Sapphire! I don’t know if you remember me but I figured since I was in town I’d see how you were!”

Wallace hastened to the gym doors, stopping several feet away from Sapphire. He remembered her — a most fiery challenger, taking the badge with ease. She also appeared in contests, he reminded himself, and smiled charmingly at her.

“Why, Sapphire! Pleasure to be seeing you again. I remember the most marvelous performance you and your Pokémon made in your latest contest!”

Sapphire had stood there with her head poked in the door waiting for Wallace to either tell her to come in or tell her that he was busy doing Wallace things. But he seemed really happy to see her, so she decided to actually open the door and walk inside. Smiling and waving back to him, she began to make her way over to him.

“Really?! Thanks! I’ve been working on trying to make the performances more fluid and less jarring if that makes sense? It’s a lot harder than I originally thought.” She laughed, rubbing the back of her neck. She couldn’t believe she was getting compliments from the literal Contest Master. 

This must have been some weird dream. But no, she remembered having a dream about dragon riding last night. So this was definitely real. It really did blow her mind, how seemingly easy and elegantly Wallace could perform on the contest stage. “I don’t think anyone could top your performances though. They’re the best in all of Hoenn, maybe even Sinnoh too! How do you do it Wallace?!”

Sapphire had been wandering around the same market square for at least an hour looking for a few things that she didn’t even know she was looking for. She wanted to see what sort of cool items they had around, since it was going to be one of her longer training expeditions. She had been wanting to train her second team to be a little stronger. But now that she was here…she didn’t even know what she needed.

This happened a lot. She would have a goal in mind, and then have about three other things she wanted to do because of one thought in passing, and it would spiral from there. Originally, she had gotten a couple health items and food that would be easy to make while she was out camping. And then she saw a scarf that looked warm and comfy. And it was all downhill from there.

Thank god somebody was here to distract her because she was about to get very caught up in shopping for things she didn’t necessarily need. It was fun to look, but it was incredibly time consuming. Whirling around on her heels, she blinked for a few seconds, but gave the guy a happy smile. “Huh? Adventure? Sure! I mean, I’m not really doing anything anyway! What sort of adventure?”

Organized Chaos | | Sapphire & Steven

Sapphire was spontaneous, not really one to have a plan for much of anything and just letting the winds take her wherever. It didn’t really matter much to her where she went or what she did, as long as she was having fun. But today, there was a very specific thing she wanted to do today, and that was bother Steven Stone, the Champion of her home region.

Admittedly, she should have taken the title but she absolutely didn’t want it. That looked like way too much responsibility and she wouldn’t really be able to do a whole lot...like see the world. And her sense of adventure was far too strong to sit still in one place for long.

Climbing up into a nearby tree in Ever Grande, right next to the League headquarters, she squinted at a window. It was open, and Steven just sort of doing work. Did he ever take a break? She was starting to think no, and that needed to change!

Pulling on a vine to make sure it was stable, Sapphire grabbed on tight and swung herself straight through the open window and rolling into his office. “Surprise! It’s me! Do you ever leave your office? I don’t think I’ve seen you not working.”

The Great Outdoors | | Sapphire & Yellow

Sapphire was sitting in the grass outside town, staring up at the sky. Today was a peaceful day, and it was nice to get out and relax. She had just finished another day of training in Kanto, since the terrain and climate were a lot different from back home. It was a great change of pace, and she knew her Pokemon liked to see the different parts of the world too.

Her Blaziken was resting next to her, locked in a deep meditative state. He always did like to really focus when he finished sparring. It was their daily routine almost. Sapphire would get up early in the morning and go for a run with Kamina, and then the two would spar. After that, it was a restful afternoon. She liked that about Kamina, how he just sort of got her.

They had been partners since she became a trainer, and their bond was inseparable. Since they had just finished sparring, she was tending to a couple cuts she got from her match. Laughing a little bit, she looked over at Kamina who was still locked in his trance. She could respect that about him, not that she could do it herself...

Her thoughts were interrupted by some footsteps. She looked up to see a girl standing a few feet away. Sapphire smiled, waving. “Hey, good afternoon! Great day out for some training, huh?”

Breeze | | Sapphire & Wallace

Sapphire was familiar, very familiar with Sootopolis. She had spent a good amount of time there during her first adventure through Hoenn. And she could still recount her battle with the fierce gym leader there, Wallace. It was nerve wracking, seeing someone she admired so much be on the opposite side of the field.

She had grown a lot as a person since then, maybe not in size, but in other ways. She was still tiny, but she liked it that way. Finding herself standing in the crowded squares of the beautiful city she grew to love, she was wondering what sort of things she could get into today.

The brunette didn’t have a plan, and nothing really came to mind. Except maybe one thing. Sapphire could always see what Wallace was doing. Would he mind a visit? Maybe? Shrugging the questions away, the spunky girl made her way down the street full speed toward his gym. She still remembered where it was, even after being away so long. 

Poking her head inside, she waited for a minute or two before calling inside. “Hey, Wallace? It’s me, Sapphire! I don’t know if you remember me but I figured since I was in town I’d see how you were!”
