Behold, it's my first self-standing lectern book!

I've wanted to bind the @mxtxfoodzine into a hardcover book ever since I first discovered them in November, and this binderary I finally got around to it 🎉

I figured a lectern case would be perfect for a recipe book, plus I'd been wanting to try it for a while anyways! There's definitely some glue spots and wonky corners, but for a first try I'm very happy with it :)

Also a huge thanks to @spockandawe 's spreadsheet and all the people who wrote down their findings in the @renegadeguild 's discord server, I'd never have figured this out without y'all!

Fanbinding - Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know

This is my last round of experimenting with bamboo strips, for now at least. For these books, I used bamboo for the spine, and attached them to hard boards for the cover. The string going through the cover boards follows the look of a stab binding, but doesn't actually go through the pages. Instead, the folded pages are sewn to the strings on the spine with a narrower thread, in a variation of the secret Belgian/crisscross binding. The spine ends up being very flexible; it can lie flat or even fold all the way backwards, and although it ends up feeling kind of "loose," it's actually pretty sturdy. I made a box for the set to give them some more stability when sitting on my bookshelf.

Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know features a couple of plot-relevant books, so I thought it made sense to use with a binding method that called attention to itself. Many thanks to @spockandawe for letting me use your typeset!

Aaaand that's a wrap on binding solmussa's Only The Brave for me. Third and final volume is done. I'm really happy with how the spines look on a bookshelf.

It was my first experience working with a cutting machine and a heat transfer foil and it wasn't as smooth sailing as I'd like to, but oh well, you can't do everything perfect at a first try.

Photos of the first two books are also published on my page btw. I'm so grateful to everyone who liked and complimented my little project. Learning and trying new things can be frustrating, so it was really nice to see people enjoying what I’m doing.

Next step: to make a pretty slipcase box to store the books. I've seen some videos on tiktok and it looked sooo good. Now I want one for myself.

I did a faux rebind of Dune as a birthday gift for a friend of mine. Thankfully, his girlfriend sent me pictures of his own Dune Edition (in German) and its measurements. That way he can use this book sleeve for the German edition too. He’s been complaining about that design for quite a while, basically every time we enter a book store.

I also hand-stitched this little desert design into the book cloth, because I don’t own a cricut lol

So. I know I just did a binding of The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish, but that was a lectern book, and it's been tough to get a lectern binding that I'm completely and unreservedly happy with. If more practice is what it takes, then I'm game! But in the meantime.... this is the fish book. The romancing a fish book. The impatiently waiting for a fish demon to..... devour my essence book. The 'my servant thinks I'm fucking my fish' book. The fishpreg book. The fish themed wedding book. What, was I supposed to NOT use my exciting new fish leather??

Now, the struggle with fish leather is that it comes in very irregular oval-y shapes. I wanted the spine to have the right weight, so I cut the biggest rectangle I could wrangle from the hide, and belatedly realized my remnants weren't large enough to get good corner pieces. So that's something to consider in the future! But despite that, the fish handled like a dream, the gold and brown aligned BEAUTIFULLY with a wave fabric I had in my stash, and I shamelessly went back to the scale themed endpaper well. I usually don't like repeating myself so quickly, but I had a lot of fun designing this typeset, and this story is just a delight on every level!

this has been in the works since last november.

i discovered a friend i’d met through bookbinding also loved mxtx and when we agreed to do an exchange i knew exactly what i was making. could i have made this less than 6 books? absolutely. so many mistakes were made with these books but all in all i’m very happy with how they came out and i’m so happy she finally has them!

the art on the dust jackets is by @/ RACCUN7 on twitter and the end page art is by @huaepiphany !! both artists were so kind to let me use their art for this project and it would not be complete without it!! 🖤

if you’ve never read this fic but you love tgcf then i cannot recommend this enough. this fic is one of my top 5 all time favorite things i’ve ever read and to this day i think about the character development and story probably more than the original story and if ever there was an oc i loved it would be ren song. i think everyone should read this and love it as much as me and i cannot wait to make my own copy sometime :) i’ll probably post some more closeups of the other books soon, but i just thought i’d share these!
