In general, I'll stick mostly with either what I'm familiar with or with things that require more imagination than research (expanding descriptions of fantasy realms, character development, etc). Especially in my Tolkien fanfics, I do a lot of referencing back to the source material to make sure everything is accurate and that is what the vast majority of my "research" is. Sometimes "research" is going to Tolkien Gateway or my Quenya dictionary too.

For things outside my realm of experience, if I can, I try to give myself some sort of direct experience. Obviously, I write a lot about smithing, given who I write about mostly. I've gone to events where I can watch blacksmiths at work (like Renn faires or historical reenactments) so I can take in the atmosphere, noises, smells, etc, as well as ask questions. (And I'm actually going to possibly be taking my very first blacksmithing class sometime this fall.) I've also researched medieval smithing terminology and techniques in academic journals and stuff like that.

The thing I love about the whole Annatar hating being touched thing is that in theory, you could give it some angsty reading, like Sauron has gone so long without experiencing any true kind of friendship or kindly touch, that he's taken aback and confused by the gesture — except that Charlie somehow manages to imbue him with a palpable sense of utter loathing. Amazing. XD
