"It is?" McCoy realizes he has no real grasp of what Scotty might've been up to, nor for how long - has he been here this whole time? It's strange; now that he's got his right mind back, he doesn't recall either he nor Jim exiting that strange tower with him at all. Is this a rescue mission? It's been a long few weeks from where Leonard's standing, he knows that much, and Jim was caught up in the very same nonsense. Must've felt just as long for the others, too, he's gathering; the engineer seems nothing short of utterly relieved, so much so that Leonard barely has time to make it down the steps before he's got to brace himself or get run right over. He only just barely manages to catch him by the arms instead of toppling over backwards, clapping him on the shoulders.
Tumblr media
"I'd love to say the same, but I've got to admit I would've preferred to have this little reunion in the transporter room. What're you doing down here?" He frankly would've assumed that if Jim and McCoy were here then Spock would naturally be here too. "And how long's it been? I don't even remember beaming down here. Just thinking I was some half-rate medic on a boat of all things."
While Scotty did enjoy the never ending project that seemed to materialize out of nowhere over the past month or so, the engineer was itching to get the hell out of his place and just wander for a while. Now that his mind was all back in order anyhow...
A month. It had been a damn month since he and Jim got here, with absolutely no contact from the Enterprise. The engineer didn't like doom thinking, it did him no good in the past, it certainly wasn't going to do him any good now ! But there was something that would do him some good, and that was the very sudden arrival of the good doctor's voice. God, Scotty had never turned his head so fast...
Tumblr media
" Leo ! "
Scotty usually had more professionalism in him, but right now he was just a man. A man who couldn't help but change his direction and practically barrel towards the doctor.
" Jesus, Mary, an' Joseph, it's good ta see ya Len. "

Given that McCoy starts hunting for Jim the very second he has the wherewithal to do so, it takes a frankly obnoxious amount of time - almost two full days, as a matter of fact - to track the man down. Little surprise there, but it's still damn irritating and despite his best efforts it's frankly a matter of luck that he bumps into him at all. Almost literally, for the record, as McCoy emerges from one of the city's so-called medical centers ( he'll be the judge of that, but not today ) at nearly the same moment Jim exits from what looks like some centuries-old shopping complex. Go figure.
Tumblr media
"Where the devil have you been?" Normally it's nothing short of a relief to see Jim in a place like this, but McCoy already crossed that bridge a couple days ago and has since been effectively sitting on his hands and waiting to hear whatever the captain's plan is to get them out of here and back to the ship. That and worrying that he somehow got himself killed, but then that's a fairly standard concern of McCoy's. Still, he clasps a hand on Jim's arm both to keep him in place and assure himself that they're both really here. "I've been looking all over for you! Jim, just what the hell is going on here?"

It was not Leonard's first, or third, or fifth rodeo. Landing somewhere unfamiliar and not even realizing it, getting so roped into some hivemind or simulated reality or what-have-you that he forgets who he is or what he's doing. It's got to be some sort of chronic bad luck on his part.
This time around, he's not exactly sure what the point of it all was, but he's not so sure he cares to stick around long enough to find out now that he's feeling a little more like himself again, either. All he knows is Jim was there and finding Jim is usually step one to getting back to business, because Jim has a funny way of both wandering his way into the worst of things and jumping right back out. He takes the too-sleek and shiny handheld device they've stuck him with out onto the porch with him, leaves the glowy paperweight behind ( damn foolish thing to give a man in place of his belongings ), and sits himself down onto the steps to figure out how to get in touch with Kirk.
Tumblr media
He's not sure how long he been sitting there before the sound of a door opening and closing just a few townhomes down draws his focus elsewhere. McCoy glances down the sidewalk just briefly, turns his attention back to his own concerns, and then double-takes. The red is familiar enough, but he'd recognize the man wearing it anywhere.
"Scotty?" He gets to his feet in a second flat. Funny, he recalls running into Jim during the whole affair over the last few weeks - why can he not recall Scotty being there? Unusual for him to be part of a landing party in the first place, given he's stuck on the conn more often than he probably cares for. "Mr. Scott!"

Leonard is all business when he sweeps into the room, coffee in hand and head buried in a clipboard full of forms he's got to pass along to their first patient. He's not late, per say, but he's sure as shit getting a slower start than he'd like to be, if the harried, clipped greeting he offers with only the briefest glance up is any indication.
"Morning, Nurse. I—"
Tumblr media
He stops. Stares. Glance over his shoulder, like perhaps this is a wayward patient that somebody oughta be chasing down. But, no, the stranger is donning scrubs, he's got a badge... McCoy is relatively well-informed around here, given how tiny the local hospital is. The hiring process is really that fast these days? And he never caught wind that they were so much as doing interviews?
"Nobody tells me anything around here." This is mumbled primarily to himself. To the apparent new hire, he merely arches a brow. "Where's Connors? He was supposed to be in today."

It's not like he's been avoiding Jim.
For one, that would be impossible. Jim's an old friend, even if the specifics regarding how they met are a little fuzzy in Leonard's memory. Old enough to know that he's the sort of person you can't easily shake, though - and not bad company, besides, so he's not worth that kind of effort.
He's just busy. They're just busy, and their days on the boat are getting further and further behind them, and... well it's only natural to drift apart some, even if the absence of that once-closeness hurts like a physical wound some days. They're still friends. Acquaintances? Hard to know how to bridge that gap when you're not even sure how large the gap is to begin with, and Leonard's not one for leaping heedlessly.
Tumblr media
He's wiping down one of the patient rooms at the moment, and casts a glance over his shoulder at the sound of someone rapping at the doorframe. He gets right back to the job at hand without much other acknowledgment, but coming from Leonard when he's caught up in a task that's about as close to a warm welcome as you're ever going to get. "For you? I'd worry what would happen if I didn't." He'd say there's easier ways to find an excuse to visit him, but when he stops to think about it he's not so sure that's true these days.
"Good to see you, Jim. Been a while," or at least it sure feels like it. "Tell me you didn't actually pull some fool move to land yourself here again."
@savehearts liked for an event starter.
LAST HE HEARD OF BONES , HE GOT A JOB AT THE HOSPITAL. They hadn't spoken in . . well . . as long as Jim can remember. But he'd be lying if he said he didn't miss the man. And maybe , just maybe , this conversation would be all it took to drag him away from his job for a little while. Always a workaholic , this one. But Bones had always been quick to call him a hypocrite when he called him on it.
HE KNOCKS ON THE DOORWAY once he finds the room that he’s working in , not yet actually crossing the threshold into the room. He’s not sure if the man event would want to see him. They were close once , sure , but now ? Not even Jim’s brother seems to want to get close. Or maybe that’s his fault. After a moment of mental debate , wondering if this is actually a good idea , he finally pipes up.

EVENT: UNTOLD STORIES.
Tumblr media
Born and raised in Arcanus, Leonard's extensive medical studies culminated in him serving as medic on the S.S. Enterprise, an exploratory vessel helmed by his close friend Jim Kirk. The crew disbanded just around a year ago - and since then he's thrown himself fully into his new job at the local hospital.
...Maybe he's thrown himself a little too far into it, actually. A year's worth of separation from the rest of the old crew has left him struggling to reconnect with them, so while he feels plenty of professional fulfillment, it's harder to get away from the pervasive feeling of loneliness.
HIS CURSE: For one reason or another, McCoy can't seem to find it in him to open up to those around him. When presented with the option to be vulnerable, he always finds an excuse to back out, deflect it, or otherwise talk himself around it. He doesn't know why it's so hard, but the distance from those around him - even those he desperately wants to be closer to or reconnect with - grows more evident by the day.

DOCTOR LEONARD BONES McCOY / star trek: tos As we both know, I'm a bright young medic with a miraculous touch.
World's biggest lover pretending to be the world's biggest hater— highly empathetic, highly emotional, and pretty damn grouchy.
Paradoxically the chief medical officer of the most advanced starship in the 23rd century and an old country doctor from Georgia with a distrust for most technology. Unless, of course, it's medical technology - in that case, he loathes the thought of working with anything less than the best.
A reliable shoulder to lean on and more than willing to share his frankly impressive stash of alcohol with a friend. Just be prepared for tough love.
