i know its for roughly the same reason: crozier didnt have anything left back in england so he stayed

it just feels like they took an intentionally more sloppy and weird way to get there. i have no good way to format my array of nitpicks/complaints/questions so its gonna be a bulleted list

•they cut out the crozier second sight bit, which i actually enjoyed bc catholicism being seen as pagan like many indigenous religions are was fun, now hes just a normal old man, also lead to crozier understanding what tuunbaq was. in the show i think silna may have mentioned what it was but i dont think to any significant degree, hickey just says its a ‘spirit wearing an animal’ like how does he know that

•killed tuunbaq?? cant wrap my head around this one, such an unsatisfying ending why would this spirit be killed by a chain. is it not actually a spirit and just a weird normal polar bear? if it could be killed this easily why didnt the shamans do it.

•going off this last point what even was the relationship of tuunbaq and the native people. they said they cried after it died which leads one to believe its some sort of protector/pet/tentative spirit friend but if this is the case why would they just accept crozier like that. id hate a white man who helped kill a bunch of my friends and my scary dog.

•when he was actively killing tuunbaq i thought he was saving it because it was trying to throw up the chain and he was pulling on it, so i thought it was gonna be a when ur cat swallows floss situation and theyd be friends or something after

•silna did NOT have to cut off his hand and she was way too hasty in doing so, she hit the shackle like 2 times with the rock and the key was kind of nearby. crozier doesnt even mention it either, he doesnt seem upset by this massive loss and handicap.

•aylmore is just gone, he was the best of the problem trio

why did they do all this? i get that its ultimately to make the story more concise for a tv series, but the choices of what to cut and change seem arbitrary and weird and take out some of the more interesting story elements, leaving them to have to come up with new things to explain key plot points

its interesting that in the final episode of the terror, they make silna go off alone but crozier stays in the village, and choose to stay there when some people come looking for him, what was his motivation for this 😭 did he just like living with his new bros

like in the book he stays with silna and they have a roving family of tuunbaq shamans or whatever, and its like his new better life away from dumb old england. but now silna is just wandering and hes just bumming with her family?

the whole time i was reading the terror i wondered if aylmore hickey and manson were real people, and dan simmons just made real people into evil conniving homosexuals (maybe they were real and were actually evil homosexuals irl) or if he made 3 fake people to insert into the real cast to be evil and gay.

both options are funny and so i wont do the research to confirm either.

its truly disturbing , they gave it one of those overly detailed porn tongues instead of a normal polar bear blue tongue (much cooler)

in the amc adaptation tuunbaq is a gross guybear but in the book its always just described as a bigger than average polar bear who maybe has a longer neck or something sometimes

so i guess my issue is that the men on the ship had seen alot of/hunted normal polar bears, and tuunbaq looks nothing like a polar bear to me: a person who has had limited experience with them. a man on a ship trapped in the arctic hunting said bears would be far more intimately familiar with them and so i just have a hard time believing that they would see this thing and think it was a polar bear and not a demon from hell sent by god to torment them :/
