My first memory of an orphanage was at 4 years old when my granny took me to distribute teddy bears to kids my age. I remember being at our home packing dozens of teddy bears into bags & being really upset that there were so many, but they refused to give me one. I couldn't understand the logic. When at the orphanage, they gave us a tour of these rural facilities & explained to me that what felt like a cold, barren school with beds was actually those children's home & they didn't have mommies & daddies to kiss them goodnight. My life purpose was ignited in that moment. I live to serve and I serve with love. This is the only reason why my work breeds success DESPITE my health challenges in the past few years. Tonight as I reflect on my 17 years of service, I would like to express gratitude to every single person I know because I KNOW that I have asked you for your time or money or intellect to be able to keep our projects alive, thriving and able achieve the collective vision of empowering young people who don't have. #grateful #dankie #happyhealthyme #transformation #rockstart

13th October is apparently #nobraday to "bring awareness and highlight the travesty of Breast Cancer & how it impacts on some of our lives. So let me understand this, something that is deemed to be part of your femininity and womanhood that has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease and often has to be sliced, diced & sometimes chopped off is to be flaunted by this #nobraday to bring awareness to the disease? How about thinking about the women who struggle with prosthetic breasts because they couldn't afford a reconstruction or those who have been left with uneven scarred breasts or fake plastic breasts that rupture and threaten their lives further...? I cringe at yet another thoughtless, harsh "awareness campaign" that serves the perky and beautiful breasts' egos rather than bringing the correct attention to the disease and an awareness of how to self diagnose or support those who have/had the disease. You want to see a girl without a bra for "breast cancer awareness, how about asking someone who has been through breast cancer what a mastectomy or lumpectomy is really like. I will show you my scars proudly. #bcawareness #breastcancer

Sometimes I do things like shave my head on National morning television live when I hear that some women are so scared of society insulting them that they would rather lose their lives than lose their hair. Question: what kind of person cares more about what someone looks like than if they are healed and healthy? All this drama around hair. I wish we protested in the streets and boycotted school every-time our peers are date raped, gang raped, bullied and beaten. #girlslivesmatter #gem #girlsempowered #hair #shavedhairdontcare

There is an Eagle in the Himalayas that flies to the highest peaks every winter, where no predators can reach it. Comfortable in their harsh, extreme climate, the eagle builds a nest and begins to rip off its feathers one by one. It then uses its beak to pull out its talons. Bleeding, bald and nestled safely in the highest peaks the world offers, the Eagle then bashes it's beak against a rock and cracks it. Raw, exposed, vulnerable, the Eagle retreats to its nest and hibernates. Time passes and the world forgets watching the Eagle's silhouette in the sky. Spring comes, Eagle awakens, not battered, bruised or bloody but with the freshness of baby feathers that will blossom, tiny talons that will snatch the life out of their next meal and a brand new shiny beak ready to sing with pride.

Doctors ONLY do what they specialize in, that DOESN'T MEAN THAT IT WORKS OR IT IS EVEN THE BEST COURSE OF TREATMENT. (Warning: This message is for people who own their lives and actively participate in their existence because an ignorant someone knows less than they should. Without all the information, one cannot know the right way for you.) Trust You before trusting doctors. They don't know better, they don't know everything and those who claim to know, are the most dangerous. Think about it. If you go to a surgeon, they will say cut. We've all watched Grey's Anatomy. That's real. I've never met a doctor who didn't try to convince you why their way is not the best way. If you go to an oncologist, they give chemotherapy. Never do they say, Karissa, you're young, let's examine why you got cancer before we cut you open, stab you with needles, bomb your insides til they barely function. Never have they said, I'm going to scour the world for a solution. No. They will sit opposite you and play God. Give you the medicine they know, after all, they get more money when it makes you sicker and you go back right? This year alone I've thrown away thousands of Rands worth of pills that doctors prescribed willy nilly but only made me violently ill, like morphine for example. Didn't need it, myprodol was working, but they use their charm and trick us into thinking that they know more than us. Same doctor who gave me morphine encouraged me to "drink lucozade for the electrolytes". My response: what about the high levels of sugar? His response; so? FACT: SUGAR FEEDS CANCER GROWTH. Does he care or is he financially planning on buying his 3rd Maserati? Chemotherapy is R50 000 a pop on average. Sometimes you have to go weekly. R200 000 off one patient a month. And you know you have repeat customers cos chemotherapy keeps you sick. #cancer #exposed #truth #educateyourself
