Preach!! Even though I obviously favor Kevin, I have always loved Chris McNally and would’ve been thrilled with a Lucas/Elizabeth pairing had the storyline called for it...but it didn’t. Everything for the past three years has been building up to Nathan. I think we all understand this is a fictional show, but you’re watching it to believe in the storytelling and the characters and this choice is just not believable. Even the dialogue (which is never the best, I know) was next level cringe! It played out like they had flipped a coin last minute and through something together. And based on the ET interview, it kind of sounds like they did just that. Apologies to the writer who has been developing the Nathan/Elizabeth arc - you did a good job and were robbed at the end!
Yeah. It’s about the bigger picture. The show isn’t that great. The writing is subpar at best. But we accept that and it’s part of the charm in some ways. I’ve enjoyed season 8 probably more than most people because of what I thought I was watching. I thought it would all come together in the end and we’d have this complete, beautiful story that made it all worth it. We could forgive some of the shortcomings if the end result was satisfying. It wasn’t. So now looking back, it makes the entire season look bad for all parties involved. No one got the story they deserved and that’s really unfortunate. It didn’t necessarily seem that way as we watched which makes it even more frustrating. We shouldn’t be questioning things if the writers had done their job correctly. Even if we didn’t want her with Lucas, we should’ve understood why she picked him.
It baffles me that they didn’t plan the choice beforehand. I really can’t understand the logic behind that especially when it seems like they only bothered to write decently for Nathan’s arc (as frustrating as it was) and gave Lucas crumbs. That’s a huge part of why people are so upset. How can people believe in this love story if they didn’t bother to tell it?

Wow. Was never invested in anything Elizabeth did, so kinda shocked by the vitriol. I assumed it would be Lucas, just because they wouldn't try repeating themselves with another Mountie, but really didn't care either way. Lots of people were pissed off because of Jack leaving, and swore they'd never watch again, but I bet most of them did. I best most of the people currently wailing and gnashing their teeth will this time too. • As for the writing, who's still surprised after 8 seasons to find that the WCTH writers are among the worst in showbiz? Their glaring errors, plotholes, and thoughtless choices are the reason for fanfic writers. If things didn't end up the way you hoped, go find someone who will write it better. If you truly have no reason beyond Elizabeth and her romantic choices to watch the show, well, time to find the show that will give you what you want (although my experience is that almost no show gets it right - certainly not all the time. They can't please everyone.). • As for me, I was only waiting to see what might become of Henry and Abigail, and of course that's left in limbo. Will he come back with her next season, come back w/o her but with an understanding that they are still friends and still corresponding, or not come back at all and the lingering glance he gives her name over the cafe as he drives out of town (ostensibly to visit his son, but hopefully to swing by Abigail's place and check on whether her mom has kicked it yet or not) is the sole nod to the fan's conviction that he cares for her, and the fanfare-less farewell to Henry Gowen's character? It seems like they'd have put more effort into bidding farewell to such a popular character, but then we've already established that the writers have their collective heads up their asses, so who knows. • Finally, I see a lot of people who are happy about the Elizabeth/Lucas pairing, so not sure the vast majority of fans are as pissed off about the triangle resolution as everyone here might think. Probably no one thinks it was well done, however.
I think you’re missing the point. It’s not necessarily about her not picking Nathan. It’s about the fact that a story was developed for the past 3 seasons that got completely destroyed in 5 minutes in favor of Elizabeth choosing the man she was already with. It made Nathan’s entire arc and all the angst that couple had completely and utterly pointless. He was made the punching bag for no reason. It goes much deeper than “waah she didn’t pick the guy I wanted”.
Of course there’s other reasons to watch the show. But how can people trust the writers now when they’re willing to throw everything away? The writing had been better and those plot holes were being addressed this season. Had she picked Nathan, everything would’ve made sense. The way Elizabeth has acted this season would’ve made sense because she was going on a journey to overcome her fears. But that didn’t happen and it’s left everyone so confused and doubtful and upset. Rightfully so. The rug was pulled out from under us. We also have no idea what show we’ll be coming back to in season 9. Will Carson come back? Will Henry be back? Will they bring back Abigail? Will they pair Nathan with Faith which none of us are interested in? There’s so many factors that will contribute to whether fans choose to come back or not but a lot of that is up in the air right now.
Of course there’s people who are happy. Duh. But given the backlash, they are not the majority. Take my little survey, for example. Only 11 people out of 157 wanted her and expected her to pick Lucas. 11. That’s it. It was a complete blindside and fans don’t appreciate it.

When Calls the Hogwarts (Characters sorted into houses)
@woodlandcrochet I saw you asked so I wanted to offer my thoughts!
Elizabeth: SLYTHERIN. If I wasn’t so angry at the moment I’d say she’d be a huffelpuff or ravenclaw... maybe... but she’s slytherin for me right now haha.
Lucas: RAVENCLAW.
Henry: SLYTHERIN - BUT FOR GOOD REASONS. <3 He’s ambitious, persistent and smart but also so much more.
Nathan: HUFFLEPUFF. Nathan is incredibly brave, so he also could be a Gryffindor, but it’s his humility and down-to-earth nature that tipped him into Hufflepuff for me. I think the Sorting Hat would struggle with him!
Allie: GRYFFINDOR. This girl has true grit.
Minnie: HUFFLEPUFF. Minnie is fiercely loyal and dedicated to her family and her work - but mostly to protecting the vulnerable ones in her life. She’s an incredible Huffelpuff in my opinion.
Joseph: HUFFLEPUFF. I think he’s many things but he’s on a tireless pursuit of service to his God and to his community and I think he shines and thrives off of working hard.
Faith: GRYFFINDOR. You know? Faith is an enigma. She’s dedicated to learning her craft and tirelessly in pursuit of knowledge but she’s also incredibly brave and plucky.
Fiona: GRYFFINDOR. Man, she is always keeping us on our toes!
Clara: HUFFLEPUFF. Clara’s kind and hardworking and she’s a brave loving soul and a helper since day one. A ray of sunshine.
Jesse: SLYTHERIN. Jesse’s ambitious and is always looking for a way to do things better. Admirable.
Rosemary: GRYFFINDOR. Rosie is the poster-child for Gryffindor. She’s brave and bold, thrives in chaos and never backs down from a challenge.
Lee: SLYTHERIN. Again, an excellent businessman who keeps an incredibly cool head in times of chaos and trouble. He always feels prepared for everything that comes his way and he’s really snarky. I like that about him.
Bill: GRYFFINDOR. Just a really brave dude, who will always feel like the protector of Hope Valley to me.

When Calls the Heart Live Rambles
Season finale, s8 ep12 The Kiss
So this was such an awful finale. Everything leading to this moment made absolutely no sense. Before we get into the whole thing, let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start *sing like Julie Andrews*
Noooo, Henry is leaving!!! I kinda suspected this already, but I didn't want it to actually happen. Man, when Abigail left she really dragged everyone else with her: Cody and now Henry *le sigh*
Clara running to Jesse when he arrived was so sweet.
I wish Faith were leaving instead of Carson.
I absolutely love Rosemary and her newspaper business. And finally Elizabeth apologized. Goodness.
Now the triangle. I need to do this very calmly or else I will explode.
When Elizabeth spoke to Nathan saying she was just trying to replace Jack with him, that she loves him but isnt IN LOVE with him. Yo I just about fell out of my seat. I was so scared. That was the first time I ever doubted she wouldnt be with Nathan. But then the whole scene at the saloon between Nathan and Lucas made me think Lucas is still hesitant about Elizabeth's feelings, so maybe this love triangle isnt over yet.
Then when she opened that package where her book was and it read A Single Mother...that's when I was like. Oh my gosh she chooses no one. She chooses Baby Jack Jack and the 'the kiss' actually DOES refer to a kiss on the cheek. I thought my awful joke that I posted earlier was coming true. But then I suspected, okay, there's no way she's picking Lucas. If she doesn't feel in love with Nathan yet, then she will later in s9.
Then, the minutes kept passing by. Its 9:50pm and I'm thinking to myself 'wait a minute. Is this enough time to resolve things with Nathan?' And then I got really scared. More minutes passed and she hadn't broken things off for good with Lucas. I could only start to think that there is only time left in the episode for a conversation with Lucas and that's it.
When Elizabeth was at the school house and Robert brought little Jack with him. I was like, 'omg my theory is coming true. It is a kiss on the cheek to Jack Jack because she chooses him and to be a single mom,' then later she can choose Nathan without a love triangle plot.'
Next...
The last few minutes of the episode. She's looking for Lucas and looking very much in distress and I'm super confused at this point and also scared and slightly in denial. 'She can't be choosing Lucas?' And then I realize what the writers are doing. 'Ohmygosh she's choosing Lucas' and then I watch the rest of the episode in horror and I'm covering my eyes because I can't watch that kiss and then ew ew ew so MANY kisses yuck.
Elizabeth choosing Lucas doesn't make any sense storytelling wise, regardless of any bias I have towards Nathan. There was so much build up for Elizabeth and Nathan's relationship. A solid foundation had been built between them, something that a real relationship could grow from and become love. Whenever Lucas and Elizabeth had scenes it was so surface level. They had some connection through her writing career but even that wasnt very deep. Everything else in their relationship, the fancy dinners and romantic dates, that's really all they were. It was all just romance and the feelings of love without having any true depth of feeling. And not once did Lucas or Elizabeth ever mention the word love with each other.
And what about ep2 of this season when Nathan confessed his love to Elizabeth and she ran away because she was scared? It showed how she was running from her feelings and living in fear and when she ran away to pursue Lucas afterwards, it showed how Lucas was only a crutch for her and a comfortable relationship rather than something true and real. Because news flash, loving someone is actually being vulnerable and taking a leap of faith which she would have been doing if she were with Nathan, not with Lucas. She isn't taking any risk by opening her heart to Lucas. There isnt any vulnerability in their relationship on Elizabeth's part there.
And what about the Emerson quote, about doing what you're afraid to do. And what about Nathan's cringey parallel with Carson 'I'm not giving up', and what about Allie's feelings in all this and her wanting Elizabeth as a mother, and what about the ep with Ned and Florence's wedding when Elizabeth starts to take her own advice about not living in fear and that we can't let fear stop us from missing out on life's greatest joys? I'm sure there's lots more too that I'm missing here but that's what I could think of just at the top of my head.
Also, Nathan was saved that day he didnt go on the mission at Fort Clay. He was saved for a reason and now for what? For a Lucas ending? They totally filmed two versions of the ending and then decided last minute who she should end up. It actually makes sense too because when she first talks to Lucas, what? She's gonna confess her love to Lucas in the middle of a crowded cafe? As if! She was gonna break up with him there. She really was there just to see Minnie. They had the scene interrupted so that it could sort of make sense with whichever ending they wanted to decide upon later.
I'm so annoyed with the writers. They obviously did this for shock value. There are so many tv shows that do this but an audience doesnt watch a show for shock, they watch it for the story. Just bc something is shocking doesnt make it good storytelling. Shock value is only good when it makes sense upon looking back. This does not. A good story can usually be predicted by the audience actually. From what I've seen on social media, it seems that the majority of viewers wanted and predicted that Elizabeth would be with Nathan. This is for a reason. A good story sets up the relationship and gives clues and leads the viewer along to grand reveal later. It all makes sense to the audience. It's suppose to be a good story and an enjoyable ride for the audience. A show shouldnt be written as the season is happening, everything should be concluded or at least have a very clear ending to work towards. I hate how writers just decide to change things in an instant because then all the moments prior to the present episode make no sense and it was all for nothing.
This finale literally made me sick to my stomach. They did this story so dirty and I'm also upset that now, the actress who plays Allie, she probably won't be in the show much anymore which is a real shame because she was pretty good for a child actress and I just like to support the youth coming into their own.
I am not going to watch s9. Catch me fulfilling my heartie needs on fanficiton.net and also, I pray that we get leaked footage of this Elizabeth chooses Nathan ending that I am sure was filmed. Also the episode was called 'The Kiss' which is very vague and not specific to either relationship. Which is another hint to the writers leaving things open so they could make last minute decisions on who they wanted her to choose.
So disappointed. From what I see on twitter and everywhere else on the internet, this show will tank next season because no one will watch it. Lori Loughlin really said if I go down then the show goes down with me.
Jack died for this????

YES. And in this episode I was so excited for her to see Nathan the man, because he’s been doing nothing but showing her parts of his heart, mind, and soul this whole entire season. She loves him but she’s not “in love with him”? What absolute bollocks
@beaconofautism
What makes me angry as a Team Nathan fan is he was never truly given a chance by Elizabeth. Elizabeth was filled with fear. She never dealt with Jack's death. Of course, she might have flashbacks to Jack because she was with a Mountie, but she never saw Nathan the man. She saw Nathan the Mountie, Nathan the Uncle/Father figure/Guardian, but not Nathan the man. We didn't get to see them go to dinner or even try to court. We were robbed in so many ways. I still can't believe all of this for zero.
Mmhmm.

PREACH
Season 8 of When Calls The Heart is a classic example of writers “telling” us, not showing, what their lead character feels. In any love triangle, audience initial bias plays a critical factor in storyline perception. Season 8, though, has been misleading—in its use of plot devices and just the fact that the unchosen suitor shared more screentime and meaningful dialogue with the lead character this season, than even the chosen suitor. The chosen suitor scenes were filled with superficial dialogue, interruptions, and lots of “telling” not showing. The shock factor outcome with haphazard build-up demonstrates either careless, inept, or prideful writing. If the writer had a particular suitor in mind from the beginning, then it is the writer’s responsibility to guide the audience to the same conclusion, not cruelly manipulate until the bitter end. Shock factor loses its appeal when half of your audience is left confused and disheartened. I realize one side was bound to feel this way. But it does not serve your characters or your craft when you take the most multi-faceted male character on the show and demote him to tertiary character.
This is the most frustrating result of season 8. It is not just that the heroine chose the character I personally like less. It is that she chose, objectively speaking, the lesser character. She chose a man who is her equal in the superficial matters, not in the things that truly matter to build a life together. She chose a man who will say all the right things, but not a man who will challenge her into becoming a better person. And she chose the man who was passive throughout season 8, not the man who actually tried to fight for her.
Love may not be logical, but this choice defies the overarching theme of the entire season. Love may not “make sense,” but character writing should.

I’m really sorry, you guys. This truly sucks. I just don’t know what to say. This was a mistake and I take back all the positive things I’ve said about John Tinker. He may have just written the show into the ground.
