How To Survive A Horror Film (2023)
I have followed ReadyComicsRoll on Tiktok for a while. So when I saw that the channel was behind the production of a horror short film, I knew I wanted to watch it. I just needed time. And that time has come.
youtube
Wonderful movie! This is clearly made by people who love horror films! (Especially slashers like Scream.) There was a good amount of explanation of horror tropes and qualities like the character archetypes. The message of the first half seems simple enough. Follow the rules, and increase your odds of getting out alive. Break them, and it's a lot easier for the killer to cross you off their list.
For its twenty-eight-minute run time, it was a good film. Some of the dialogue was a bit interesting. But I didn't really mind. The film had an idea, and it executed it pretty well.
I did see the first twist coming. But I didn't see the motive/reason coming. And it honestly adds a flair to the reveal.
HOWEVER, the second one immediately got me! That was so artsy!
The practical effects in this film were good and there was some good humor that actually made me chuckle. A well-done flick. (Also, DAHLIA! I haven't seen Dalhia in anything outside of Thomas Sanders' YouTube Channel!)

Here's a chill summary of my movie watching experience from October. It's late, but I had to take mental health time, and I was kinda making myself feel like it was an obligation and not something cool and fun. :) Enjoy.

Well! Guess I have to watch them all now!
31 Days of Horror
Day Seventeen: Nerdy Prudes Must Die
A fun horror musical on YouTube is by no means cheating.
I watched this Team Starkid musical last night and had a fantastic time. Some of the songs were super catchy, the jokes landed, and there were some solid moments of terror.
This will also be the second slasher musical I watched in the month of October, after the surprisingly decent Stage Fright.
This is my first Team Starkid project and I am kind of ashamed I started with their newest venture. Because this cast of actors is great. I loved all of the characters and the absurdity of some of the comedy. But it worked. It kept me engaged the whole time.
As a self-proclaimed nerd, I didn’t hate the over exaggerated stereotypes that the musical used. And I loved the central character relationship of Peter and Steph.
The preacher’s kid in me got a kick out of Grace Chastity and all her “totally not” evil antics. (I love Angela Giarratana.) And the big crude football player/fucking monster (Max Jägerman) was equally hateable and loveable at the same time.
Nerdy Prudes Must Die was a fantastic musical and definitely made me realize I need to watch more of Team Starkid.

31 Days of Horror Day 16: Goosebumps
My conquest for the month kind of came to a screeching halt because of some personal things. Mental health comes first, and when a fun challenge starts to feel like an obligation it may be time to take a step back.
I watched the Goosebumps show that has been slowly releasing this fall on Hulu.
Since the show is not over yet, I am not saying much!
I love this fucking show. I was the kid in elementary schools that would read Goosebumps books during class, and hide them in my desk if I thought I was about to get caught.
I have watched six of the seven released episodes, and I am hooked.
The core cast of the five main characters, Justin Long, and Rachel Harris are amazing! I especially love the performance of Miles Mckenna, who I have followed on youtube for a while. This is the first time i have seen him act, and I am so happy to say that the roles they play in this show are one of my favorite parts.
And of course, the villainous forces of the show are all good too. Equal parts suspenseful, scary, and quite a bit silly.

31 Days of Horror! Day Fifteen: The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster
I didn't know what to expect going into this movie, only that it was going to be very reminiscent of the story of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. I am very excited to say that my expectations going into this movie were surpassed. It was a brilliant film.
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster was the directorial debut of director Bomani J. Story and produced by Crypt TV. It stars Layla DeLeon Hayes, Chad L. Coleman, Denzel Whitaker, and Edem Atsu-Swanzy.
The movie follows a teenage black woman with a brilliant scientific mind who successfully resurrects her dead brother, Chris. But things go wrong. Horribly wrong.
This movie, as I said earlier, takes inspiration from Mary Shelley's classic and gives it a more modern rehash, and a primarily black cast The movie had themes pertaining to racial and social issues, and didn't use the characters or the settings as stereotypes. The characters were all likeable and I felt really invested in all of them.
The story is also a very tragic one. Vicaria is a teenage girl who by the time the movie is underway has lost a mother and a brother. Her philosophy of death being a disease, while farfetched, is a reasonable conclusion to come to. She's lost people, and she had no one to really help her understand her grief. She retreated into her scientific mind.
Another thing I really liked, is that none of our main characters are cut-and-dry antagonists. Sure, some of them do antagonistic things, but every character has reasons for the things they do that is understandable. While characters make decisions, I don't necessarily blame them for them. If anything, the system that in which these decisions to be made is the real monster.
It's a tangent. But I loved this movie. It was intense, it was sad, and it made me think. :)

31 Days of Horror! Day Fourteen: One Cut Of The Dead
So I watched this one yesterday. It just took me a day to figure out what to write.
One Cut of The Dead is a really interesting film about a film crew making a zombie movie about a film crew making a zombie movie. There was a lot going on, with both the fiction movie plot which I loved, and the stuff that followed.
This movie is a zombie comedy, written and directed by Shin'ichirō Ueda. It stars Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Kazuaki Nagaya, and Harumi Shuhama.
There is a lot I appreciated about this movie. The comedy was a huge one. Characters freezing, characters jumping back to life and yelling, the facial expressions, the timing. The filming! The filming of the film, specifically the first forty-five or so minutes was done super well, especially considering the camera is actively a character itself. The zoom-ins that hide the character deaths or zombie attacks, the concealment of others. And the fantastic achievement of making that segment of the movie in one take is phenomenal.
Decent film. ^^

31 Days of Horror Day Thirteen: Slotherhouse
So, since I had a film that I had to skip because it wasn't on Hulu (for some reason) I decided to indulge in the new Hulu movie, Slotherhouse.
Slotherhouse is a horror comedy directed by Matthew Goodhue that stars Lisa Ambalavanar and Sydney Craven.
The movie follows Emily, a college senior who dreams to be the president of sorority Sigma Lambda Theta. In her desire to become president, she adopts a three-toed sloth whom she comes to name Alpha. However, the sloth is a fun-sized killing machine and starts murdering the sorority members.
This movie was a blast. A riot. A hoot and a half. I thought it was so cute and so so dumb. It had some likable characters who I thought were delightful. It had those silly moments that made me question what I was watching, and the timing of some of the humorous moments had me gasping for air.
I don't want to say too much; the movie just came out and I feel like it should be experienced.

31 Days of Horror Day 12: Dog Soldiers
When a bunch of furry writers suggest a werewolf movie, you know it's got to be a good one.
Dog Soldiers came out in 2002 and was the directorial debut of Neil Marshall, a director who would go on to direct The Descent, episodes of Westworld, Game of Thrones, and Constantine. The film stars Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Emma Cleasby, and Liam Cunningham.
It features a squad of soldiers who are thrown into a fight for their very survival with a pack of bloodthirsty werewolves.
I loved this movie. It is definitely one of the best werewolf films I have seen to date. The werewolves looked good. It looks like they were all practical effects. The blood and guts were goopy and gushy. And we got to know every single character well.
Pertwee was a highlight of the film of course, of course. And it's the second time I have seen him in a movie this month. (The first was in Howl.) Kevin McKidd is another standout as our main character, Cooper. He really is instrumental in so many of the successes of our main characters in halting the werewolves' advances.
So, yeah. Furry Writers take another win on this one. Great movie.

31 Days of Horror Day 11: Bloody Hell
Couldn't finish watching this one. O.O It included one of my triggers and I want to be able to sleep tonight.
Bloody Hell is an Australian horror movie directed by Alister Grierson and stars Ben O'Toole, who is a highlight of the film.
Ben O'Toole plays Rex, a man who leaves the country after spending eight years in jail for a controversial response to stopping a bank robbery, just looking to get away from all of the attention he's been receiving since his release. However, he ends up going somewhere much worse. Ben also plays Rex's conscience, which I found extremely delightful and it's why I watched as long as I did despite the triggers and all that.
Though I couldn't finish all of this movie, I was able to get through over half of the movie. And the half that I watched was good. Rex and his discussions with his inner conscience were very entertaining. He was arrogant and cocky, but not in a way that was unlikable.
The c*nnibal family trope was not something I liked (in fact, it's why I had to stop watching.) But Rex being likable was a huge reason why I watched as long as I did.

31 Days of Horror Day Ten: The Babadook!
I am so behind. I know. But I am going to catch up. (Aliens wasn't on Hulu so I had to move on to this movie.)
A movie about a mother and her son falling into a deep well of despair when a children's book brings out fear and paranoia. The Babadook was directed and written by Jennifer Kent, and starred Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman as mother and son, Amelia and Samuel Vanek.
The performances of the two leads and the intense scenes were the highlights of the film. Though in my personal opinion it carries on a bit longer than I would have liked.
But the movie was tense and scary. It communicated all of the feelings that the characters were experiencing. It didn't need any gory kills, or even clear shots of our main entity. Most of the scariest parts come from the paranoia and tension. And I thought that almost everything else about the movie was straight-up fantastic.
It was not my favorite movie, but that does not mean I hated it. It was a great movie, just not my cup of tea.

31 Days of Horror! Day Nine: Alien
I finally did it! I watched the sci-fi horror classic! And I loved every second.
A movie with so many unnecessary deaths -- if only the crew had listened to Ellen Ripley -- Alien was directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon.
Sigourney Weaver plays Ellen Ripley, third-in-command of the Nostromo. The crew is awakened when Mother, the ship's computer intercepts a distress call that leads the crew to bring aboard something dangerous.
I really don't know if I have anything to say about this film that hasn't been said before. I can only imagine what it would've been like to go into that movie blind and not knowing anything. The chest-bursting, Ripley being a badass, Ash being an android.
That being said, Ellen Ripley is one of the most fantastic survivors ever, and Sigourney Weaver is a fucking powerhouse in this role. The movie is still tense and scary despite me knowing most of the major twist.
Everyone in the film is amazing (despite the characters' lack of... brains. Because I am sorry, how do people not listen to Ripley!)

31 Days of Horror! Day Eight: Hell House LLC
I'll be real, I am not sure how much I am going to be able to say about the movie. Found Footage movies are not easy to recount. The movie was very intense and I did like it though, I just had a hard time with shaky lenses and flickering lights.
Hell House LLC is a found-footage horror film that was directed by Stephen Cognetti and released in 2015. It recounts and comments on a horrible tragedy that took place on the opening night of a haunted house and claimed the lives of fifteen people.
As I said, I really enjoyed this film. It was intense and scary. I was glued to the screen. The clowns were a horrifying element I did not know about going in. I am well aware they were not the only haunting antagonist in this film. But they scared the shit out of me.
Paul's demise was also surprising as I don't remember getting confirmation that he died. Did he get possessed, and if so, DAMN. I hated him initially, but by the time he disappeared in the middle, I wanted him and all the others to just leave. (As one should do.)
Other than that though, this seemed like a standard "fuck around and find out" type of movie except, the only reason people stayed was because the CEO Alex didn't want to leave.
Scary Movie, for sure. (Also, Fuck Alex for not thinking of the safety of his crew.)

31 Days of Horror! Day Seven: Stage Fright (2014)
A musical? A Canadian Musical Comedy that is also a slasher? Featuring Meat Loaf? This was a wild ride.
Completely seperate from the 1987 Italian slasher film, 2014's Stage Fright was directed by Jerome Sable in his directorial debut. It stars Allie MacDonald and Douglas Smith as siblings Camilla and Buddy Swanson, and Meat Loaf as Roger McCall. It follows a young woman who works as a cook at a theatre camp, while aspiring to fulfill her dreams and take on the role of her late mother in the musical The Haunting of the Opera. Meanwhile, a killer uses the mask from the production to dispatch those involved in the show.
This movie was an enjoyable watch with how absurd and cringey it was. But at it's core, I actually enjoyed the characters of Buddy and Camilla and I felt like they both deserved better than the life they had. Camilla was a character I cared about.
I thought the amped-up theater kid energy was so funny, because we all know a theater kid, right? (I am/have been a theater kid, so I can joke about them.) Plus, within the horror realm, there was a lot that this movie did really well.
Inventive kills, a solid twist and motive, and some decent musical moments. Not bad! :D
