I'm happy to take this opportunity to showcase the new Scarlet and Ayana model changes!

It's good to look back on how far we've come since the beginning of the year. Who knows where we'll be in December!

Reintroducing: Plantii of Terretopia fame!

Plantii is an extraterrestrial entity called a Diminii: Creatures that watch over Earth, judging them to decide their fate...

...but enough about that, this is a thread about why I felt I had to change his design! Read on!

My new universe of higher-quality Starfall OCs, as well as the amazing model work by @FriendFred3 (Twitter), have me rethinking everything I initially knew about character design.

Specifically three questions I felt were not answered correctly with Plantii's old design.

"Do all characters need to be expressive?"

Look at Donkey Kong. Nintendo recently changed Donkey's design to better fit his wacky, childish, sometimes friendly personality, and while that may work for HIM, Plantii is the opposite.

He's less expressive and alot less friendly.

His personality was mainly inspired by Captain from Tankmen, except he's alot more redeemable. He's just very careless and sarcastic.

Mr. Lunt, oddly enough, is another inspiration specifically for his self-centered personality.

Notice anything similar between the two?

They don't have visible eyes at ALL, and when they need to express intense emotion, they do so with what they can work with!

So I felt the CORRECT answer is "Not Always!" Your characters don't always have to be expressive if it simply does not work for them.

Next question I had was: "Does this design REALLY fit the character's lore?"

Plantii is an alien. As such, his design needs to hide that. I felt as if the short hair and original sunglasses did not tell that kind of story. That's important to me.

So my answer? "It does now!"

My last question?

"Does he have chemistry with his character duos?"

Example: Mario is brave but reckless. Luigi is calculated but cowardly. A good duo can contrast eachother so they can best support eachother. Every Moses needs their Aaron.

Who's Scarlet's player two? Skyler!

Skyler is caring but clumsy, while Plantii is clever but cautious. Skyler and Plantii can help eachother out of problems they can't get out of alone.

This kind of chemistry is important, and I think this also translates to character design! Short and tall, colorful and gray!

And overall? I just really love this design more than anything Plantii's looked like before.

He's cute. He gives off classic Newgrounds vibes, and I think that works so well for a character like Plantii.

Where the initial redesign was an accident, I've come to not regret it.
