Saying Goodbye to The Bold Type [SERIES FINALE]

A very enthusiastic ‘go team’ is in order as we settle into a new reality. A reality without The Bold Type. There have been few shows that have left their mark on me and my heart, and this show is one of them.

In 2017, we met the women of The Bold Type wearing gowns (Sutton in purple, Jane in red, Kat in gold), holding hands, and screaming in the subway. Little did we know, these would become women to root for, to be invested in, and to inspire us. Throughout 5 seasons and 52 episodes, we have seen these characters go through just about everything. New relationships, different jobs, heartbreak, new apartments, etc. We stood by them because they brought something new to the table and consistently captured our hearts.

I stumbled upon the show after the first season ended, binged, and quickly fell in love. I had already known who Katie and Aisha were due to their previous work (Faking It & Chasing Life), but Meghann was a new face. It is absolutely crazy how fast time has gone by and how I’ve grown as they have in the last five years. When the show came out I was going to turn 16, and this year I am going to turn 20.

SUTTON BRADY & MEGHANN FAHY

Where do I start? Despite knowing Katie and Aisha prior, you became my favorite character just like that. It is because of who you are. I love your determination, your goals, your passion. Meghann, thank you for bringing Sutton to life. I cannot imagine anyone else playing her. The raw emotion in the scenes of the divorce and the relief of not having a child is not lost on me. You truly are a shining star and I cannot wait to see what you do next. Sutton Brady related to a lot of people in terms of her childhood background which is important for an audience member to do. Her realism has gotten her where she is today and I couldn't be more proud. Thank you. Xx

KAT EDISON & AISHA DEE

Ah! I am so glad that you went from being a minor character to the main character with this series! I remember you in Chasing Life but were a minor character. I love Kat for her activism and for re-evaluating how she goes about things. She is not afraid to back down or to fight for what is right. Aisha, you are the light in a sea of darkness. Your smile truly does light up a room. I am thankful that you got to play Kat Edison. Thank you for voicing what it is like being a POC in the industry. I love you. Xx

JANE SLOAN & KATIE STEVENS

Type A Jane! Whilst you did say problematic things every now and then, you learned from it. You got out of your comfort zone and trust your gut in chasing stories you knew were valuable. Katie, it warms my heart knowing that after your singing journey, and the cancellation of Faking It, you landed right where you were meant to be. I admire your unwavering love for life and the show. It truly means a lot to me, knowing that it has impacted you as much as it has us. Thank you.

& BEYOND

Obviously, I am forever in debt to the creators of the show. I am eternally grateful to everyone who worked behind the scenes and on-screen to make this show possible. Thank you for showing me women who go after what they want and know they deserve. Thank you for continuously working on creating storylines that other shows do not discuss. For holding characters accountable and in turn holding us accountable. You all mean the world to me. Thank you, Melora, Stephen, Adam, Sam, Nikohl, and Dan for playing Jaqueline, Oliver, Andrew, Richard, Adena, and Ryan. Thank you for creating ships to fight for and acknowledging trials in relationships that most may not want to face. I cannot thank you enough and you all will always have a place in my heart. I miss you terribly but I’m excited to see what’s next.

"Don't Turn Away"

You guys! This is the second to last episode of the series! Not that you need a reminder, it just gets me in my feels. But enough of that, let's get to the good stuff.

SUTTON

Sutton starts therapy with confessions and slip of tears. She mentions her mom, the divorce, her job, and her friends. She admits she has a couple of glasses to drink and deflects that she does it for fun. In the middle of her session, she gets a call from Richard. May I say that I smiled when I saw his face? It's been too long. He apologizes for sending Dev to tell her about the divorce. He has the divorce papers and wants to meet today. They meet, she looks AMAZING but that's not new. They make small talk about how they've been and Richard reveals that a pipe burst at the apartment which is why he's staying at a hotel. He gives her the papers, tells her to take as much time as she needs, and suggests they order food. Sutton says she's okay with just her drink. Sutton tells the girls about her dinner with Richard and how he seemed completely fine. She admits that she had wine, but she doesn't want to talk about it. However, she does talk about it to her therapist. She was expecting him to be devasted, and when he wasn't, it made her sad. In an interesting turn of events, seeing Richard happy reminded her of happy she would get when she got to see her dad. She feels like she's not enough. Back at home, Kat offers to sit with her while she signs the papers. Sutton pours a wine bottle down the drain before doing so, and they send Jane a voice memo recapping. Sutton meets Richard again with the signed papers. She tells him how she felt when she saw him the other day, and how while she wants him to be happy, it made her feel bad. As if, he's happier without her. MY ADVANCED MAN RICHARD HAS DECIDED TO ADOPT A CHILD. That's why he was happy. (I say that because I feel like many people don't choose adoption and he could've had a surrogate but he didn't). He takes her hands in his, and he declares that he will always love her. Every day sucks, and in the tender moment, they sleep together.

KAT

Kat gets to work on expanding her #DontTurnAway movement. However, it proves to be difficult when potential investors refuse to move forward without solid details. Kat fills in Adena in on what they can do and need to do to get investors. They run into Jacqueline who says it's nice to see the two of them together again. She offers them her help if they need it. Adena tells Kat that she should take her up on the offer and talk to her since she has a lot to advise. Kat goes to see Jacqueline and pitches #DontTurnAway. She tells her that its storytelling meets activism. It's going to talk about all the issues that many overlook. Jacquline suggests bringing #DontTurnAway into Scarlet. That way, she'd have the funding and the vast viewership. Kat tells Adena about the meeting but Kat isn't thrilled about the prospect of it being involved in Scarlet because it's a corporation. Adena tells her that the movement will be great no matter what, but she doesn't want Kat to turn away from a potentially great opportunity because of her fear. The next day, she voices her concerns and wants with Jacqueline. She wants creative freedom and press push. Jacqueline agrees without hesitation and offers to do a launch party for it. And just like that, baby boo (or Katherine as Oliver called her) is back at Scarlet! Kat later admits to Adena that she was right about why she didn't want to let it be at Scarlet. They embrace, and there is some tension of the sexual kind. As expected, Kadena stans rise for the steamy moment.

JANE

Jacqueline announces to the office that Jane is in charge, acting as herself while she steps away. Sage is the first person to ask Jane for her help, followed by Oliver. She has to ask Andrew to schedule a time for Sage since she has a meeting. Jane takes over a meeting with Forsythe (a jeweler or something). He's very abrupt and straight to the point. He doesn't like that a percentage was cut and threatens to pull advertising from Scarlet. Jane vents to Kat about how hard her day was and how she wants to have time to interview Frankie. Kat hypes her up and tells her all the positives in her day. Jane pitches to Forsythe about investing in a different way and he accepts. Jane arrives late to Frankie William's charity dinner and therefore cannot get in. After a drink, Jane talks to the bodyguard who wouldn't let her in (and he's very attractive). She gets to know a few things about him and asks how long he's been a bodyguard. She asks to interview him since she can't interview Frankie. Jacquline checks in on Jane and her piece. Jacquline tells Jane that Scarlet has been her baby and that after her trip, she is officially retiring. Jane tells her that she is Scarlet, to which Jacquline replies that she won't always be and asks her to be Editor-in-Chief.

Next week is it, baby! Soak it all in and prepare however you need to.

"Day Trippers"

Shoutout to my hotel room for allowing me to watch live for once! I'm very excited to live in the live TV experience once again. So let's get into it.

Jane is not doing well. She threw Andrew's $8 breakfast pastry, she's been working late at night, coming into the office uber early (4:30). She only has a week to essentially be Jacqueline to keep Addison, and there's added pressure since she's already lost Scott.

Sutton is single, scrappy, and psyched to style her shoot. It deals with fast fashion, which Carly points out that fast fashion isn't exactly great - especially their landfill.

Kat is on the verge of losing her job at the Belle due to the projection of inmates the previous night. She is given a tight timeline to prove that it was a good idea and helpful for the Belle.

Jacqueline tells Jane that the best thing for her to do right now is to go home and take the next day off. Jane tells the girls that she wishes there was a potion to help her. Kat suggests mushrooms (micro-dosing). All three girls agree to take some, so this should be an adventure. Kat tells them that the dose will be a small dose, so they most likely won't be getting (too) high. Jane is eager to have it, but Kat tells her she needs to be in the right headspace beforehand.

Jane and Sutton took too much because now they're hallucinating, and are just out of it. Jane thought Andrew's cookie had a heartbeat (which is why she threw it out of his hands), Sutton is hugging a piece of furniture in the fashion closet, and Jane's trip has her seeing Jacqueline singing at their meeting.

In the fashion closet, Sutton reveals that she was worried that they wouldn't feel anything so she added extra. Work is her life right now and she wanted the shoot to be inspired. They call Kat to let her know, but it's too late. However, she knows what to do and is on the way.

Jaqueline tells Oliver that she will be going on vacation soon and that she wants him to take Jane under his wing while she's gone. She knows that Jane has great potential and wants to ease her into the position. She also recognizes that being the editor-in-chief is not easy. You have to inspire those around you to want to be passionate.

Kat makes it to Scarlet, tells Andrew that he and Jane are pretty much the same person and that's why they hate each other and starts giggling pretty much the moment she steps into the closet with her friends. Sutton is worried that she's stuck to the couch - or 'poof' as she calls it - and Jane wonders if the size of her hands is wrong for her body.

Kat puts crystals in the center of their chests and tells them they just need to be open and embrace everything. Sutton sets out to embrace the world with open arms and gets inspiration from a plant. Addison tells Jane that the article she was originally on scared her, so she chose a different one. Kat thinks her face looks weird and is discontent when she still has to go to work even though The Cut recognizes and praised her activism.

"I'm sorry I called you a bitch." - Sutton to a rack of clothes

Andrew gives Jane advice about trying to fill someone else's shoes. When he joined drag choir, he was taking the place of a really good drag queen and lied that he could hit a specific note. He came clean to his group and felt relieved. One can only try to be someone else for so long and it won't be enough because the only person you can be the best at is yourself.

"Being honest doesn't make you weak. It actually makes you strong." - Andrew

Jane tells Addison the truth of why she's been avoiding her all day. Sutton gets sent home because Oliver saw her wine glass. Kat comes out of the fashion closet in one of their dresses and she leaves with Sutton. Jane stays behind to help Addison with her article, which Addison visibly appreciates.

The next day, Sutton apologizes to Oliver who tells her he's worried about her since she's drinking at work. Kat resigns from the Belle since she feels like her movement could be big if she fully commits to it. Jane has convinced Addison to stay! Jacqueline lets the bomb drop on Jane that she's going to be doing everything that she does while she's gone on vacation.

Sutton asks her friends if they think she has a drinking problem. She admits that she has been drinking more since the divorce. Jane and Kat tell her that they aren't certified to answer that for her, so Kat suggests a therapist. She agrees.

Next week, Jane is the boss! Kadena might get spicy, and Richard FINALLY IS ON SCREEN (he's on the phone with Sutton).

"Rolling Into the Future"

The girls are officially living together! Jane and Kat convinced their landlord to let them used the closet that's always been locked. They are going to turn it into a bedroom.

Sutton has told everyone on social media that she's moving on from Richard, Kat is going to meet with Adena, and Jane is going further with Scott. Jacqueline checks in with Sutton about how she is feeling and tells her that she is available if she needs to talk.

Andrew is late and has forgotten Jacqueline's soy latte - which hasn't happened in three years (but like, hasn't he been her assistant longer than three years?) He is appalled to see her drinking out of a "The Office" mug but I know fans of the Office aren't. Easter eggs tings. Anyways, Kat meets with Adena and tells her about her Zuri situation, but they are interrupted by a phone call. Jane wants to go to HR with Scott to make their relationship official.

At the meeting for Sage's Love & Lust vertical, Andrew sees Sutton's latest post and the comments about her divorce. He doesn't say anything until Sage wants to do a piece on 'hot married sex' since in her words, it's essential in a marriage. He shows her the post and she immediately changes 'hot married sex' to 'rebound sex'. Sutton catches on and pitches self-discovery and new beginnings after a divorce. Jane helps by saying they can interview both men and women who have had a divorce and found happiness after. Jacqueline approves the idea, and that's that.

Jane receives poor reviews and suspects its Addison after mentally going through how she's treated her. However, she doesn't really confront her about the situation...she just tries to give Addison a bigger role without talking about it.

Adena and Kat go to the Belle to ask if they can do the shoot of Zuri and her friends there, but it was declined. Even though the Belle was part of the problem in the first place, taking ownership of that could hurt their image. Kat expresses to Adena that it bothers her that the Belle claims to help and support women, but they only do that with a certain type of women. Adena tells Kat that sometimes that's just the way it is, people have other people to answer to and going in guns blazing about issues isn't always the best option. Kat is confused that Adena is not as upset as she is, but Adena doesn't want to risk getting arrested and losing her visa.

Kat recaps the situation with Jane who tells her to see Adena's side and compromise. Sutton enters and gives the girls customized bowling shirts for her divorce party. She's determined for everyone to see that she is completely fine with the divorce, which we all know is a lie.

Jane is overdoing it at the pitch meeting for the Failing Feminist. Addison is indeed going over her ideas and Scott is adding onto it, but Jane tells him not to add anything and instead just listen to what Addison has to say. She wants it all to be about Addison, which she picks up and abruptly finishes her ideas because she's over it. Jane tries to get her to continue, but she declines.

Jacqueline cannot seem to find Andrew and later that night, Kat goes to see Adena to apologize for earlier and finds out that Adena's mom is here. Her mother used to rebel, but there was no change, so she doesn't think risking it all for a cause is worth it. Kat leaves because Adena's mother clearly doesn't like her or approve of Kat's activism (and therefore Adena's if it's not safe).

Jane takes Addison to the Belle to talk things out. Addison points out that Scott has been on big pieces with Jane and that sometimes she doesn't hear back from Jane on her pitches. She's not even sure Jane likes her writing. Jane apologizes and tells Addison that she was a big get for her, and Addison tells her that she is looking for other jobs and got an offer for Yes Girl! Jane asks Addison for another chance to be the mentor that she wanted. Addison has to let Yes Girl! know in a week, so that's the amount of time Jane has to convince her to stay. Jane tells Scott about it, and he quits because it's too complicated and he couldn't be professional.

Kat takes Adena to the Belle (well the outside anyways) and uses a projector to play the pictures and videos of Zuri and her friends on the side of the building. It causes people to stop and look, and Adena is happy that Kat found another way. Kat tells Adena with a smile on her face that she likes doing this with her.

Jacqueline asks Andrew to report to her in person now, instead of on paper. He asks if this is because of his recent behavior, and Jacqueline tells him she wants him to speak up if there's something he feels that he needs or isn't getting. Andrew confesses that one of his roommates moved out and the rent difference is a lot so he had to take a second job. He works nights after his full day at Scarlet, because assistants don't get paid enough. Jacqueline tells him that she will get him the raise he deserves.

At Sutton's divorce party, things aren't very upbeat. She finds out that Kat threw the earlier dart game to make things easier for her and she gets on the mic. She tells everyone that while she didn't like being treated differently, she does needs their help to make new memories with her friends, favorite food, and music. She adds that the party favors are her wedding gifts too.

Back home, she takes out her wedding dress and her friends reveal to her that they think her wedding dress is ugly (which is what we were all thinking). Sutton starts to rip her dress and gets the girls in on the action. It's a therapeutic experience.

The episode ends with 'girls supporting girls' singing in the background and next week we see Kat getting fired, Sutton and Oliver talking, and Jane needing to be Jacqueline ASAP. See ya then!

"The Crossover"

SUTTON

Richard's coming home and Sutton is constantly checking her phone to see where his flight is. It sucks because she's supposed to be focusing on her sizzle reel that she pitched for buyers. She's not paying attention to the interview's at all and Oliver reminds her that the sizzle reel is a big deal for everyone, so it has to be done properly. Sutton redoes the interviews, and they're emotional, beautiful, raw, and real. She realizes that Richard is still her family, and asks him to meet. He replies to meet at the apartment, and they exchange a few more simple but cute asf texts. Well, fuck you Richard. Sutton excitedly goes to the apartment but sees Dev in the lobby. Richard sent Dev because Richard was afraid he'd crumble when he saw Sutton and wouldn't be able to say that he wants a divorce. Sutton tells Dev that she doesn't want a damn thing from the apartment and leaves.

JANE

Jane is dealing with Cynthia's story not matching with her interview and finds out that Cynthia lied about the claims happening to her. It happened to Rona who is too scared to speak up, so Cynthia thought it would be okay to take on the story as hers to get the word out and take down Mark Afton. Unfortunately, most likely the lie will get out and it will lose focus on the story. Jane tells Jacqueline what happened and apologized but Jaqueline tells her to take the story down immediately. They are going to talk to Nicole in person the next day. Nicole tells them that she does not believe that women should be believed all the time because women lie too. Jacqueline agrees, but says sometimes they lie because they are scared. Word gets out that they met, and Jane wants to own up to her mistake instead of letting Jacqueline take the fall. All goes well and Mark Afton gets suspended.

KAT

Kat's old childhood friend, Zuri, applies at the Belle but cannot be granted a job due to being a past felon. Kat finds out that it's because Zuri's mother was a single mother of three with no job so she started shoplifting. Now when people hear 'felon' they don't want to hire her. Kat has a plan to use her social media platform to show how hard it is for Zuri and people like her to get back into society after having felony on their record. At the ad sales conference, Alicia unknowingly gives Kat an idea on how to help Zuri and it will involve Adena.

ALEX

Alex tries to get Joey his job back, but does not have any luck on the first try. Alex sees the video that Kat has made with Zuri in order to help her and takes it into consideration for helping Joey get his job back. He decides to have him on the podcast. Joey explains he was a dumb, insecure kid when he made that joke without thinking about who it hurt. Alex confesses how he felt towards Alicia when they met, and how he wanted to "be the man" and he knows it was sexist but Alicia didn't cancel him. He encourages people to confess what they did in the past that doesn't reflect who they are now, and they do! Excuse me whaaaaaat, Alex got a job offer at Pinstripe! Jacqueline tells him she'll beat the Pinstripe offer and Alex accidentally texts the groupchat with Sage and Andrew so now they know he's possibly leaving. He does decide to take the job because it's a risk, and he feels like he can make a difference at Pinstripe withy what he's learned at Scarlet. Bye, I'm emotional. I know I'll be a WRECK when the finale comes.

"Trust Fall" [SEASON FIVE PREMIERE]

Welcome back, beautiful people! Unfortunately the beginning of the end, but let's savor it, and make it count.

The girls are hungover! On a weeknight from a nighttime adventure that involved drinks, hooters, and Sutton pretending she worked there. Eva is texting Kat about the night they spent together and Billy texts Sutton asking if she's okay.

The Scarlet crew is going on an overnight retreat. Sage is trying to get coffee but forgot her wallet so someone else pays for her. All goes well until Alex comes down and the man who bought the coffee (Joey) worked at Pinstripe. He got fired and somehow it's Alex's fault. Sage tries to convince Alex that Joey is a good guy (he went to the Scarlet march event) but Alex tells her that he wrote a piece on "fragile masculinity" about him and brings up the homophobic tweet. Sage brings up the fact that Alex once made a mistake too when he unknowingly pressured that girl into sleeping with him. He defends that he wouldn't do that today and that he felt terrible - and Sage says that's exactly the case with Joey.

Kat calls Sutton and spills the beans about sleeping with Eva. She quickly hangs up after though, and Sutton looks through pictures of her and Richard. The three girls meet at the Belle and Kat talks to them about how she broke up with Eva over text. Jane and Sutton tell her that's ghosting and isn't closure. She ends up texting Eva to meet and tells her that she's not looking for anything, to which Eva replies that sex doesn't equal something.

Jane asks Scott for help finding Mark Afton's assistant for her piece on the abuse of his in the workplace being ignored. The assistant got scared and tells Jane to never call her again. She enlists the help of Addison to transcribe the interview.

Fun times for the retreat for Jane and Sutton since Eva is going to be there leading the Public Speaking portion of the event. When they arrive, Sutton takes a shot since she saw tiny sandwiches which reminded her of her wedding. One of the exercises is trust falls which Sutton fails by falling forward due to her being drunk. Jane calls Kat and asks her to come to watch Sutton since she has to leave to track down a source. When Kat arrives, she runs into Eva. Eva helped cover up Sutton's drunkness by telling Oliver and Jacquline that she got food poisoning. Kat tells Eva that she didn't like herself after sleeping with her because as much as she wants it to not matter, she can't be with someone whose beliefs hurt her/people like her.

Scott and Jane track down Mark's assistant and she's less than thrilled. She's scared. She's diabetic and without the job, she doesn't have the insurance to get her insulin - Mark knows that. Jane asks her to record a video of her in which she confesses her feelings for Scott (but excludes his name). She trusts that she won't post the video, that's why she did it. Back home, Scott asks Jane if what she said was true. And GUYYYS, they almost kissed but she has a story to write.

Sutton tells the girls that she slept with Billy who has a wife and kids when she went back home to Harrisburg. Kat reveals she felt bad for sleeping with Eva and hated herself for it. Sutton asks the girls to promise to not keep secrets from each other to which Jane reveals she has feelings for Scott. Seconds after that, Jane gets a call from Addison asking her if she read Cynthia's interview that she had emailed. The stories don't line up.

And that's where we are left until next week babes!

hey babes! aahhhhhhh we finally got news on if the bold type was coming back to us. it’s funny because literally yesterday/this morning i was wondering if we’d get it back because i looked forward to that show every damn week.

no, i have not forgotten the dumpster-fire train wreck that ensued in 4B, but i’m glad we weren’t left with a show ending without tying up loose ends. i just hope the writers don’t fuck it up. because they should know by now, we won’t be quiet about how we feel & about what we feel is right for these characters.

“Lost”

We open with the girls helping Kat move out of her apartment. Jane is feeling more like herself and used Reliable Buddy 2.0. Jacqueline will have to talk to Ian about what happened between with her and Miles Shaw. And my cute asf baby Richard got Sutton a baby book.

Kat pitches an idea for the Belle to have a podcast. She is given the chance to give it a shot and tells Jane and Sutton about it (while they’re in the fashion closet of course).

Suttard go to the hospital for their first ultrasound and find that there is no heartbeat. Sutton had a miscarriage and since it’s early in the pregnancy, she’ll feel heavy cramping and a heavy period sometime during the next 48 hours. Richard offers different comforts and distractions but she declines and goes to see the girls, then to her new styling gig.

Kat supervises-ish Jane hook-up date and Jane stops the hook-up pretty much as soon as it starts. She still doesn’t feel comfortable or like herself with her new breasts.

Kat goes back to Safford to see Alex. He offers to let her borrow Podcast equipment from Scarlet which she declines. She doesn’t want to sell her things because she’s already lost her job and apartment so money is tight. As the episode goes on, she changes her mind and asks him to help her give her stuff away.

Later, she and Jane go to visit Sutton. Sutton explains that she doesn’t feel anything towards her miscarriage. She just feels numb and going to style a five year old boy will hopefully make her feel something. Her selected outfit is a fit but, she starts to feel the pain and heads home.

Jane tells Scott that she thought she would feel like herself again after her surgery. He tells her that he joined a grief support group after his dad died and that helped him. Kat checks in on her and Jane explains how uncomfortable she feels and how she needs to find other people who have been in her situation.

Wow okay Ian and Jacqueline got me crying in the club right now. Or at least, tearing up. He tells her that he sees her and while he cannot describe how he sees her through words, he can show her through his photography.

Sutton tells Richard she’s sorry after telling him that it does hurt. They hug so tight and silently cry.

JANE FOUND HER PEOPLE...and got Kat’s couch Connie back. They go to Sutton who is in tears and reveals that she kind of feels relieved that she’s not going to have the baby. Which, makes sense since last season she told Richard that she’s not ready yet. Anyways, we kind of have three episodes left since they didn’t get to film 17 and 18 to uber sad girl hours but hopefully there will be a season 5!!

4B - Leveling Up

We are back sexy bold people! So let’s get right into it.

We open with the girls and Alex helping Jane come back from her surgery. She has exercises she has to do and slowly but surely she is getting back to normal.

Alex tells her he will be moving out and her first interview did not go so well.

Kat needs to find a job soon or else her parents will kick her out of her loft. She doesn’t take the job and meets Sutton and Jane at the Belle.

They do a photo shoot for Mara the proper way and Sutton throws up. She might be pregnant which I kinda suspected since the new promo was released but that’s how the episode ended.
