so i commissioned @frecklef0x for this absolutely gorgeous painting of my aedan cousland (yes, the default name. i’ve had him since 2011, cut me some slack), anora, their daughter eloise, and aedan’s son kieran. i know realistically cousland’s mage bastard wouldn’t be in a portrait, but… it’s my comm and i wanted him there. some scandal will be good for the nobles, it’s fine!

thank you again to kara, who is so talented, was lovely to work with, and finished this so quickly it’s kind of terrifying.

Varric looks at Hawke and calls Hawke his 'business partner' and from that moment on is just like 'I would follow you. I would follow you anywhere. I would follow you to the damn deep roads. I would follow you to the stupid storm coast. I would follow you away from here and every comfort I have ever known and loved.' He avoids his brother for three years after his brother attempted to murder him and then Hawke shows up and he's like 'I can confront him actually, but only if you're there by my side.' He sees Hawke lose so many family members and says 'when I tell this story you will get closure even i can't give it to you in real life', he says 'when you have nobody left you will have me and I will remind you that you have others who we have collected who are just as devoted.' And when everything goes to shit and the world explodes around them he says 'I will not let them demonise you/your sister; when they think of you they will see sympathetic mages trying to do the right thing and not needing a circle to cage them regardless of the fact that you were directly involved in the destruction of the kirkwall chantry that so many people are using to justify horrible treatment of mages'. He looks at the statue of Hawke by the docks that looks nothing like Hawke and says 'this will not be your legacy. I will make them see you how I see you not as some marble figure without your likeness'. And when people come with chains for Varric and tie him up he says 'I cannot follow you right now Hawke, but I can lead them away from you. I can make them stop looking. I can protect you even if it means I'm dragged halfway across the world and away from my home.' It's a level of devotion that is unparalleled.
