I’ll write up a detailed review of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” later but for now, I’ll say that the thing I loved the most about this movie was that it felt like a legitimate continuation of all three live-action Spider-Man movie franchises, rather than just two hours of cheap fan service. Yes, there was fan service, but the writing treated the meeting of the three Spider-Mans as a serious event, as if it were an Avengers-type movie. 

You can see this in all the narrative choices that were made. For example:

1)  Tom’s Peter is the one who is a natural leader and team-player since he was on the Avengers and he’s the Spider-Man who isn’t a loner. Remember, Tom’s Peter was on the academic decathlon whereas Tobey’s Peter only had one real friend (Harry) and Andrew’s Peter mainly kept to himself. 

2) Tobey’s Peter is the one to stop Tom’s Peter from killing Green Goblin. Remember, Tobey’s Peter is the one who knows what it’s like to be consumed with vengeance, figuratively and literally with the Venom symbiote. He’s the only Peter who caught the carjacker and he got a second chance at vengeance when he went after Sandman, even managing to “kill” Flint Marko (the “good riddance” scene).

3) Aside from the obvious Gwen Stacy-Michelle Jones parallel, Andrew’s Peter is the one who sees Tobey and Tom as his brothers. Remember, Andrew’s Peter was the one who felt like he was missing his real family since his parents were MIA. So, Andrew’s Peter using the word “brothers” had to have been deliberate, especially since he says that he’s always wanted brothers.

For me, the best and most important scene of any Spider-Man centered media isn't Peter getting the spider bite, it's not Uncle Ben's death, its not the training montage or the mentor scenes, it's not even the big final boss fight.

My favorite scenes are always going to be the ones where New York City backs Spider-Man. Regardless of the police or the Bugle's opinions, Spider-Man is New Yorker through and through.

A few of my favorites are:

The green goblin bridge scene from the first Raimi movie when the people started throwing bricks and shit at normy while Spidey tries to save MJ and the school kids.

The crane scene in the first Webb movie when C Thomas Howell gets the crane operator union of New York on the line and creates a path to Oscorp Tower for an injured Spider-Man.

The final battle scene from Insomniac's Miles Morales video game when his identity gets revealed but the entirety of that Brooklyn neighborhood just decides to keep it completely secret. Snitches get stitches, I guess.

Following on the Insomniac train, for the original Spider-Man game I would like to direct your attention to the entirety of the fake social media feed on the map screen. As well as every interaction he has with Yuri Watanabe and Jefferson Davis. And don't get me started on FEAST doing emergency surgery on Spider-Man and not one person mentions lifting the mask.

There's a dozen more from tons of different media over the years. It is, in my humble opinion, the best part of any Spider-Man movie, show, game, comic, whatever. Spider-Man is like the beating heart of New York. People love him, and New Yorkers protect their own.

While I totally understand being excited about Kate and Yelena (I am too!!!) I haven’t seen nearly enough excitement for the character of Maya Lopez/Echo!

In the comics she is the adoptive daughter of Kingpin. She’s Native American and Deaf. She has the powers to replicate any physical movement after seeing it once. She’s extremely talented in martial arts, acrobatics, dance, and playing the piano.

She’s being played by Alaqua Cox, a deaf Native American actress.

She’s going to have a main role in Hawkeye and is already set to have her own spin-off Disney+ show!
