When I commissioned the very skilled Saeven (find them here at Bluesky) to draw me a couple of pictures of, amongst other things, Cinder dressed like Hugh Jackman in The Greatest Showman, I wasn't expecting her to look so good in it.

My Credentials: I was an editorial assistant at a small press publisher for 3 years, and have been a freelancer for one! I also have: an MFA in poetry and a BA in history.

I have edited: novels, poetry, memoirs, teaching guides, and memoirs.

I have done: developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, proofreading, and more! Everything from helping a book become a book, rather than a scattered collection of notes, to a final glance to make sure nothing is spelled wrong.

ESL: No problem! I've worked on several works in translation, and by ESL academics, helping bridge the gap between their knowledge and the language barrier.

I am comfortable with: almost everything! Got erotica you're nervous to show your usual beta reader? I want to edit that. A novel with taboo topics with a laundry list of trigger warnings you're tired of explaining? I want to edit that. A children's book? I've done it before and can do it now. I want to edit that. Memoir you don't want to show anyone you know? I want to edit that. School paper you're insecure about? I want to edit that.

Not comfortable with: picture books. Never done it, not sure how. If you really want to we can talk about something.

Rates: Usually about 2 cents a word, $3-5 a page, and anywhere from $15-30 an hour. But: I will never late a stated rate stop us from working together! I'm posting this because I am in a precarious financial state right now, so I can't work for free at the moment, but I would rather let someone pay what they can than miss out entirely.

Payment: On Venmo or Paypal. I am trans so the name on them is not what I go by. I prefer installment payments vs a lump sum, but anything's negotiable.

That may well be the case, but then what's the solution? If Ruby can't rally people with a message of hope, what is she supposed to say? Hate Salem?

I didn't think the message itself was that great, but I attributed that to the message itself, not to the very idea of it.

In hindsight, rallying people around hope would never work.

A random literally-who girl sending a worldwide broadcast about hope would never work.

Because positivity is an abstract idea. People tend to ascribe material, realistic boundaries to it—we wouldn't want to be naive, after all.

"Have hope for the future. If we work together, we can make lives better."

"Okay, but how? (How much will it cost? What's in it for you?)"

The only free cheese is in the mousetrap—nothing just happens for the sake of bettering lives, and all that. There has to be a catch, and if there isn't, then obviously, you are naive—and thus it's an impossible, fleeting dream we shouldn't pay any attention to.

But hatred works differently—it works despite reason and logic.

"It's their fault! They are being unfair and exploiting us! If we get rid of them, lives will instantly improve!"

"Sounds about right. The egg prices are too high."

That never gets questioned.

There's a clear enemy—someone different—to rage at. The Other.

Negative emotions aren't usually ascribed reason, after all—otherwise, they wouldn't be an easy solution to all the problems when sold by demagogues.

Oh, you want to prove that The Other aren't at fault, and lashing out against them won't magically fix all problems? That we can all live together as equals? You want people to have hope? Sounds naive.

Since hatred is always (rightfully) framed as unreasonable, it becomes comfortably so—it just is.

Hate can't be debated or hoped away—only rejected, ostracized, and extinguished.

Thus, hope can never be a literal weapon or an argument. Hope can be a character's inner motivation, leading them to do things that might inspire others.

It can be fuel, but never to be used literally.

Comparison Original Design VS Redesign of The little crooked tale.

Hello, I recently started reading this webcomic, it is very good but I think it deserves more love.

I adore the Cinderella designs, she is my favorite original Disney princess along with Belle.

They managed to make the princesses' clothes consistent with the era in which they lived but preserving the magic of fantasy.

😔If only live action did the same.

I used to think that the prevalence of 'it's just like the show, but with maybe an extra character thrown in or a couple of extra scenes that don't change anything' fanfics was just, to put it uncharitably, laziness on the part of the authors.

I would prefer that over the notion that this is actually how people think that fanfic ought to be.

You have asks from people demanding that you follow the canon? In your fanfic? Seriously?

Oh more than once, even before the fanfic was a fanfic. I'd post about some ideas and would get an ask ranting about how they don't fit the "real lore".

Pretty sure at least some of it recently-ish(last year) was a certain famous clown (the one who managed to even get banned on rwby subreddit of all places), but the tendency to do this has been going on for years. I think I got something like that for the first time when I posted years ago about how the big anticlimactic flashback episode could have been salvaged (back then when I thought it could have been).

People are way too caught up in "intended" lore. Even within the fanfics which specifically exist to not be like "intended" lore.

Likely big overlap with people who go "Remnant has no discrimination because the writers said there's no discrimination beyond Faunus stuff"

I was reading an annotated fairytale book when it mentioned in a frustratingly offhand way with no footnotes for further study that there's a version of Cinderella where after she marries the prince she finds a freaking well of blood under the castle. Supposedly further adventures follow but i've yet to be able to discover the actual story.

(I'm assuming as the line said she gets thrown into it by the stepfamily it turns into one of those "I come back as a ghost three times to try and reveal my murderer/protect my kids from them and if you all figure it out before the third time I come back alive" things but I can't be sure)

Anyway I wanted that invoked the mood I imagined for this gruesome and unexplained discovery, did the Disney version as I was watching the live action one.
