You know [Anne]’d stand up for any one of you. Even in spite of what you’re saying about her. She’d do what was right. That’s who she is.

who is,, morgan harris? [oh right i'm nerdyleafeon w/ a url change i forgot if you tag usernames]
In Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987) they combined a bunch of the later Anne books into one movie, that kind of randomly pulls some details from the books and makes up the rest. They created a new character named Morgan Harris who is the dad of one of Anne’s students and he proposes to Anne. His daughter is in her early teens and this is Anne’s first teaching job out of Redmond University, so they have got to be less than 10 years apart in age. This dude is probably old enough to be Anne’s Dad. Anne says no his proposal of course.

I’d like to think she was aware! While the coincidence is certainly possible, the plant wasn’t rare or particularly unkown in her time.
Queen Anne’s Lace (as far as I’m aware) is the most common name in North America for wild carrots or Daucus carota. It has been documented since the 16th or 17th century, as it grows in most temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere! It’s growth in North America is no accident, as it was naturalized post-colonisation. It’s particularly popular in wildflower bouquets, and blooms in the summer. Now, to the extent that I would speculate that Lucy Maud Montgomery knew that offhand from life experience is pure guesswork, but that’s not all!
Keeping in mind that the plant wasn’t rare or unknown, it is possible that LMM could have read about it! As I said, it’s a well-documented weed! The scientific name comes from its identification and classification by Carl Linneaus in 1753 (quite a bigwig if you care about the history of naturalism, his method is the method™ for nineteenth century botony). It appears in scientific texts before the word scientist (thanks William Whwell, circa 1834)! Now, I won’t claim that Montgomery would’ve spent any considerable time reading naturalism while studying English, but certainly it’s possible. Naturalism was extremely popular as a reading subject (for leisure mind you) amongst the transatlantic middle classes in the 19th century and into the early 20th century! So if she didn’t know it from first hand exposure, it certainly wouldn’t be troublesome information for her to exposed to elsewhere (regardless of if she knew the latin name or not). It could be commonplace enough to appear outside of botanical catalogs and naturalist monographs.
[I’m being a history major and making a lot of claims, but alas, I’m on mobile at work and will have to provide citations later.]
In the books, Gilbert calls Anne carrots. He also calls her Queen Anne.
Queen Anne’s Lace is a flower that grows on PEI and it’s latin name is Daucus carota, meaning wild carrots.
In the books, Gilbert also receives high honors in classics at Redmond University meaning he must have a pretty good understanding of latin.
However there is never any reference to the actual flower Queen Anne’s Lace in the books and we know from Walter’s letters , Anne was named Anne simply because her parents liked the name. There is no suggestion she was named after the flower. The other names they considered for her had no floral association, like Janet.
So I don’t know if L.M.M. purposely threw in the little connection between carrots and Queen Anne, like it’s an inside joke Gilbert has with himself and the reader, or if that was pure coincidence.
The really interesting thing is that Anne With An E by changing how Anne learns about her parents, has Anne flip through a language of flowers book that used to belong to her mother, even going so far as to show a page with Queen Anne’s Lace on it and letting us know Bertha loved flowers, seemingly alluding to Anne being named after the flower. But again its unclear if we are supposed to make a connection between Anne’s name and the fact that she has been called carrots twice.
So I wonder if the writers of the show picked up on the coincidence from the books and decided to add a new layer to it in the show or if it is again coincidence that the connection is being made.
Because wanting to say Anne’s mom named her after a flower doesn’t mean they would necessarily know the latin name of the flower. Similarly LMM wanting to have Gilbert call his wife a Queen doesn’t mean she knew that could also be a reference to a flower that would link two of the nicknames he has for her.
I don’t know exactly how to conclude this tanget other than the say I can’t tell if this is all beautiful coincidence or all these writers are operating on a galaxy brain level. As brilliant as I think they are, I think maybe this is more coincidence than purposeful but I don’t actually know.

Further proof that Gilbert prefers the Avonlea’s girls to the boys (as he should, with the exception of Josie and Jane), but sadly, thanks to Ruby’s dibs, he can’t befriend any of them, so he sticks with them as best as he can, lmao.

today i wake up with a interview in spanish with some of the awae writters and they say if there was a season 5 they would killed off ruby :/ imagine how sad that would be like this 5 girls are living together now i was surprised honestly
In the books Ruby dies, so it’s not very surprising they would’ve done it in the show as well (seeing as they were never afraid to kill characters off).
I’m more upset that we never got to see the end of Ka’kwet. It would’ve been a strong season 4 as they’d discuss the genocide of indigenous people. I am enraged that their story is, once again, not being told in the mainstream media.
