I feel the need to clarify a few things about Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross leaving TLOU HBO:
Obviously, they’ll be missed. It was really great to have them on. I loved their insights, and with Craig they wrote some absolute magic. That being said, I think a lot of people have some misconceptions about it:
As of s2, most of the episode were already written by Craig Mazin. Though that’s not to say that Neil and Halley weren’t heavily involved.
The writers room of TLOU, and of most prestige shows, isn’t what you typically picture. Craig, Neil, and Halley met before writing the season, discussed plot points, character arcs, characterization, themes, and basically the season as a whole. Together, they came up with how the story would be told.
Then Craig would wrote most of the episodes himself (except for 6 and 7, which he co-wrote with Neil and Halley).
Halley and Neil leaving won’t affect the singular writing of the episode, but will affect the planning and overall plot of s2.
But Craig isn’t suddenly alone in the writing of the show. According to the WGA, he’s joined this season in the writer’s room by Ryan James and Alex Cheng.
Much like the elusive Bo Shim, Alex Cheng is relatively obscure and doesn’t have a clear IMDB page. However, Ryan James has writing credits for Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and The Last of Us Part 2. Thus, we won’t be devoid of insights and input from people who worked on the games. Not to mention story editors, continuity supervisors, etc.
Also, Halley and Neil are staying on as executive producers. They’re still involved with the show, just not in the hands one way that they were. They won’t be in the writers room, co-writing, or directing such as episode 6 (written by Neil, Halley, and Craig and directed by Neil).
I should also mention that s1 didn’t have an official writers room. Craig and Neil had something adjacent, where they planned out the season before hand, talked about portrayals and characterization, etc, but all the scripts for s1 were written by Craig minus the premiere and finale, which he co-wrote with Neil. Neil also wrote episode 7.
Craig has always been the showrunner, the head of the project. Neil was a co-creator, EP, writer, and director, and Halley was an EP and writer. Craig’s been the lead on the show since the start, so while he’s losing some great creative collaborators, the voice of the show has always been his. Same with Chernobyl.
I’ve seen sentiment expressed about how this will mean unnecessary changes, so I feel the need to point out that every change had been thoroughly discussed between the three of them in s2. According to both Craig and Neil, Neil was always the one pushing for more changes. Blaming all of s2’s flaws on Craig is, honestly, a bit badly-thought out.
TLDR; We’ll miss Neil and Halley a lot, we wish them well and hope Intergalactic rocks, and their contributions to the show are wonderful. BUT, the idea that Craig, Halley, and Neil all wrote an equal amount of the show as a trio, and now Craig is being left alone, is a far oversimplified version of these changes.
Stop sending hate to Craig. He seems like a nice guy. The cast and crew all seem to love him, and he’s platformed a lot of fantastic female and POC artists with TLOU. Plus, he’s written a lot of really incredible stuff.

on a mission to get my therapist hooked on the life of chuck
#when I asked if he was familiar with it he said ‘yeah isn’t it kind of a happy movie’ LOL IT IS NOT#but it is important I think#it is important#we had a lovely discussion about how fictional media can reach out to us in ways that feel microscopic and tailor-made#there is still one line from this movie that is maybe the most important line I have heard in my life#i still find myself saying it aloud to myself#I have been in such a state for an undisclosed amount of time that will probably never have closure#but the line in question has really aided me I hold a lot of gratitude for this one#the context behind the importance of the line is for me my therapist and GOD to know but it’s really stayed with me#thanks chuck#go see this movie if it’s near you gang it’s one of those ones that sticks with you

y’all don’t know “I’m gonna be a dad” like I do. “ellie’s supposed to be bitter and rageful” and despite that she finds a sliver of hope, something to hold on to, in a way that’s informed by her relationship dina finally finding potency and her silent promise to joel to be, if she ever had one of her own, to be a little better from him
#this is the abridged version of the rant I had with my therapist earlier lol#he didn’t watch the new season but he mentioned hearing about ellie’s line about being a dad#and from the second he said that sounded iffy I gave a ten minute long ted talk about explaining how it’s a sound and beautiful line#with all of the context behind it that builds it up#and by the end of it he said ‘wow now that you give the context I can really appreciate that’ YES SIR MY RIGHTS#media literacy has been so dead this season I didn’t even bother to finale post#joel miller#the last of us hbo#tlou spoilers#the last of us#ellie williams#pedro pascal#bella ramsey

Ignore me, I’m just crying over the fact that Joel’s watch is from his father. That watch has been passed down, generation by generation with the goal of just being a little better than our parents before us.
