I like Charon’s anger, his annoyance, his need to grumble at everything. Something about it warms me to the core. It’s just so petty. The world has ended, everything sucks. Nothing has gone right for him ever. And he’s not letting anyone on this burnt mudball forget it.

Another thought I had about replaying FNV - there’s nowhere you go where you are ever entirely alone. History is always with you, and you are never the first human being to set foot in any place, no matter how remote and inhospitable. (This occurred to me exploring the Big Empty, for context.) You will always, if you pay attention, if you explore, find that someone else was brave enough, or desperate enough, or simply [un]lucky enough to be there before you. A discarded toolbox, an empty soda bottle, and sometimes the skeleton itself.Â
I love the little stories you discover when you look to see what someone else carried with them into the last moments of their lives. I have to slow down when container-looting to actually register the contents. This person carried books, all burned now, and their best clothing. This other loaded themselves down with weapons, ammo boxes, painkillers. Still another must have said ‘fuck it, I don’t want to be 100% cognizant for what’s coming’ and the backpack beside their body is jam-packed with drugs - painkillers, hallucinogens, energy bursts. Which apparently have no expiration date. Â
A lot of people went for whiskey. I always find more empty whiskey bottles than any other trash, except for tin cans. Â
You’re never the first one there. You’ve always got company a little further back in time.Â
