Smoak Scholarship Fund for newspaper professionals: Up to $6,000
The Smoak Scholarship Fund is now available through the S.C. Press Association Foundation to help newspaper professionals pursue business educational opportunities. This award is presented in remembrance of Joseph M. Smoak, longtime vice president and general manager of The Evening Post Co. in Charleston. Smoak was president of the Press Association in 1991 and is remembered for his sharp newspaper business acumen. He died in 1993. Rather than provide an annual scholarship to one or two individuals per year, the SCPA Foundation Board has created a plan that will allow for a larger number of people to receive educational assistance through the Smoak Scholarship Fund.
This help can be for such things as tuition assistance, scholarships to business seminars or workshops, or other educational opportunities that may be available.  This plan allows member newspapers, on behalf of current employees, to request one-time assistance for an employee who is pursuing additional education or training opportunities. Unlike the current scholarships awarded by the SCPA Foundation to aspiring journalists, and in keeping with Mr. Smoak’s background, all Smoak funds will be awarded only to students or professionals who are interested in the business aspects of the newspaper field.
The Smoak fund now has sufficient assets to distribute up to $6,000 per year. Scholarship awards are not limited to a particular school or type of program, and the percentage of program costs covered will be dependent upon both the number of applicants requesting assistance and upon the perceived relevance of the program under consideration. Priority will be given to assist as many applicants as possible. All member newspapers are eligible to request educational assistance from the Smoak fund.

Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship Program
vimeo
The Foundation’s scholarship program awards annual grants for the education of deserving female students with financial need at more than 200 accredited educational institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Most of the scholarship grants support undergraduate higher education, though the Foundation maintains a special interest in health education. A significant number of our grants target education in the medical, nursing and allied health fields. In accordance with the will that established the Foundation, grantee institutions use Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation grants to award need-based scholarships to Christian women who live in one of the specified states. More than 10,000 students receive scholarships each year in individual amounts determined by their respective institutions.
Scholarship applicants should contact their institution for information on how to apply. The Foundation does not award scholarships directly to individuals. Please see below for a list of institutions that participate in our scholarship program. Note the Foundation rarely adds new institutions to this program. For more information, contact Carrie Conway at [email protected].

Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund
The Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund (SCSF) was founded on the belief that any motivated individual in need should have the opportunity to further his or her education. By removing some of the financial burdens associated with going to, surviving in, and graduating from college, the SCSF plays a vital role in increasing college access and success for many motivated yet underserved youth and young adults. The SCSF provides individual grants, paid directly to the educational institution, to every student who qualifies and reapplies yearly, from admission to graduation. The grant can be used to cover tuition expenses and related supplemental educational expenses such as books, lab fees, travel and select costs of living. All Shawn Carter Scholars are required to “give back” by conducting community service and by serving as mentors to younger, aspiring Shawn Carter Scholars.
SCSF attracts candidates from all backgrounds, nation-wide. They all have a compelling desire to pursue higher education, in spite of many personal, socio-economic setbacks, including teen pregnancy, former incarceration, interrupted schooling, poverty, and homelessness. They are hardworking, resilient and determined individuals who want to make positive contributions to their local and global communities, and they turn to the SCSF to make their ambitions and dreams possible.
A recent snapshot of our 2014-15 Shawn Carter Scholars and 2014 applicants seeking support from SCSF reveals the following:

Yes, we take many factors into consideration when determining your candidacy for the scholarship. Leadership, community service, socio-economic factors, the quality of your essay and other strengths are all taken into account in the decision making process. Our typical scholarship recipients demonstrate resiliency in the face of hardship, give back to their communities, and have GPAs between 2.0 and 3.0. Students with GPAs above this range are still encouraged to apply.
How can I maximize my chances of receiving this scholarship?
Here are some steps you can take: 1-Start your application early and complete it on time. The earlier you start the application, the better chance you have to submit the application before the deadline. You also have more time to ask us questions in case any part of the process needs clarification. 2-Tell us about yourself and use specific details when sharing your extracurricular activities. We do not know anything about you until you share it with us. Specific details can help us understand how great you are. The same can be said about your essay. We don’t expect the essay to run too long but make sure your essay helps us learn more about you and your perspectives. 3-Review your application for grammar and spelling errors. 4-The photo is optional. If you decide to provide a photo, please send us a head shot from the shoulders up similar to an ID card. If your question has not been answered above, please direct your inquiry to: [email protected].

Code Ninjas: Ages 7-14
From the website:
Code Ninjas is creating the problem solvers of tomorrow. At our centers, kids ages 7-14 learn to code (also known as computer programming) in a fun, safe, and inspiring learning environment, with a game-based curriculum that they love. Parents love it too, because their kids gain valuable skills while having a great time. Kids see real progress and achievement that encourages them to continually learn, grow, with different belt levels just like a real dojo.
The curriculum teaches kids to code using games that they already know and love, such as Scratch®, Minecraft®, and Roblox®. They are not just passively playing games – they are building games – and have a great time doing it. It is divided into levels, from white to black belt, that kids advance through as they build their coding skills.

A senior at Charleston County School of the Arts, Jones competed against a record-breaking 346,000 entrants this year to become one of 16 high school seniors chosen by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers to receive the award program’s highest honor, the Gold Medal Portfolio.
Only one other student from South Carolina received the honor, Vicky Brown of Greenville.
The award comes with a $10,000 scholarship and a trip to Carnegie Hall this summer for the ceremony. Capote, Plath, Oates and King were all childhood Scholastic Art & Writing Award winners before embarking on their illustrious literary careers.
Jones’ award-winning work — a collection of lyric essays and free-verse poems — revolves around his experience as a black teenager struggling with and finally coming to terms with his identity.
In a poem titled “Pantoum for my Mother,” Jones writes, “Stripped of my blackness, / uprooted by judgement. / I was never dark enough for you / or for the ones who called me whitewashed.”
It’s about the questions and judgment he endures from both his white and black peers for not fitting the stereotypical “formula of a black male.”

ArtFields Jr. Youth Art Competition & Programs
vimeo
From the website:
Designed for students from 5K through 12th grade, ArtFields Jr. is an array of year-round art programs, field trips, and a statewide youth art competition that provide creative fine arts outlets for underserved children and teens in Lake City and surrounding areas.
ArtFields Jr. gives children from Lake City and the surrounding areas — from as young as kindergarten to high school — the chance to engage in and be nurtured by art — by color and form and things made by hand, by artists and teachers and art lovers. Through our programs, kids do things they’ve often never done before, like see live artistic performances and art exhibitions, spend time talking with real artists, and learn and deepen their skills with studio art instruction.
ARTFIELDS JR. ART COMPETITION
The ArtFields Jr. Art Competition is open to South Carolina students in grades 1 through 12. All artwork submitted is considered by our review panel. Select pieces will be displayed during the month of April and final judging takes place during ArtFields.
