Challenge 143: Lucky Charms: Scarlet Ibis
When I was growing up, I’d always keep my eyes peeled when we got to a certain section of the highway that was right up against the Caroni swamp. Sometimes you could see scarlet ibises among the mangrove trees as the car passed by, a really magical sight with the bright red color vibrating in contrast with the surrounding greenery. To me they were a good omen, and especially if I had a test that day, I hoped they were a lucky charm!

Challenge 139: Illustrated Info: Tomato Confit
Here’s a recipe of sorts that I use every time I have to use up some ripe tomatoes! It keeps very well in the fridge this way, and is really delicious! I hope you try this out some time! -Sayada

Challenge 138: Restaurant Battle: Rice and Fish Ingredients This was a really fun challenge to come up with, based on a game idea I had knocking around in my head for quite some time. Everyone did such a good job diving into the mock assignment and coming up with their concepts for Square Carousel Games, the fictional sister company to Square Carousel Publishing that Caitlin came up with for the book cover challenge! For mine, I knew I wanted to do some more food art in a style I’ve been developing, and I’m pretty pleased with the results. What do you think? -Sayada

Challenge 137: Magic Forest: Hedgehog Wizard with a Little Backpack
Hedgehogs are super cute, so it was fun looking up reference for this! This magical critter is heading back to his home in the woods after an afternoon of mushroom gathering, for potions and for supper.

Challenge 136: Fairy Tale Swap: The Golden Slipper
Brett supplied the sketch that was the basis for my The Golden Slipper illustration, featuring the part where the Cinderella-like character’s slipper gets stuck to the church floor with tar.

Challenge 134: Freebie: Galaxysona
A week or so ago, Annie Stoll came up with a really fun art challenge: draw a galaxysona! It’s not based on me, I just wanted to draw a powerful, glamorous space witch/ keeper of a dimensional portal! It was really fun creating these different shiny textures :D -Sayada

Challenge 132: Game Time: Playtime in the Onion Kingdom
I really love the Overcooked games, and recently just finished the second installment with friends. I wanted to show the less serious side of Kevin and the Onion King, when their kingdom is no longer in peril! -Sayada

Challenge 126: Twenties-Something: 20′s 20′s
1920′s style meets modern day 20′s fashion. The coat is based on an all black version by famous 20′s designer Edward Molyneux, and the fringe skirt is based on a dress he designed as well. I researched upcoming fashion trends for inspiration for the top and the shoes. Did you know square toes shoes are making a comeback? Fashion in real life kind of escapes me personally, but it sure is fun to draw!

Challenge 125: European Folklore: Hippocampus The hippocampus is sea beast from ancient Greek, Phoenician, Roman and Pictish mythology, whose front half resembles a horse and back half resembles a fish. They are said to have pulled Poseidon’s chariots, and they show up in sculptures and mosaics. Here’s my interpretation- essentially a mer-horse! -Sayada

Challenge 124: Road Trip: Highway Hallucination
For this challenge, I wanted to do something from the driver’s point of view, something incorporating some motion. You know that feeling you get when you realize you’ve been driving for who knows how long without really being aware of it? Turn that up a few notches by throwing some terrifying hallucinations into the mix… a ʀօǟɖ ̴̻͕̠͔͆̈́̈́̈́̅̑́̊͝t̴̩͇̗͖̲̉rĩ̶̢̻̜̗͔̲͖͉̒͌͆́p̷̞̟͉͙̭̫̩̠̃̓͗̽͂͠ͅ if you will. -Sayada

Challenge 122: Medical Illustration: Blood Cells
For this challenge, I wanted to go a little more abstract and colorful. I decided on a repeat pattern based on red and white blood cells, but in a way that was pretty enough to be wearable. I wanted them to be vibrant, almost glowing – representing the infusion of life that blood brings as it flows throughout our bodies.

Challenge 118: What a Treat!: Popcorn
Popcorn is one of my favourite foods, if not my very favourite. Salty, crunchy, buttery deliciousness that’s filling, but also counts as a vegetable- what’s not to love?! I chose to illustrate this treat as a repeating pattern to represent the endless amount of popcorn I’ve eaten and will continue to eat throughout my life 💛 -Sayada

Challenge 117: Prehistoric: Cave Pattern
Cave paintings are amazing. Despite the difficulties of life in the Stone Age, and even the Ice Age, humans created art with the tools they had. We get to see a glimpse of life on earth from many thousands of years ago because of these beautifully elegant, sometimes gestural, sometimes sophisticated drawings of animals and people. I think that’s incredible. So with that as my inspiration, I chose to design a repeat pattern of a fictional past where Earth had a few special visitors 👽
