WNBA power rankings after the regular season and before the playoffs:
1. New York Liberty: We're thinking they're back. Going into the playoffs, anything less than a championship will be a disappointment. And yet…
2. Minnesota Lynx: This is our pick to win it all. They've had some bad losses, but they should be tough to take out in a series. Napheesa Collier is the MVP if it wasn't for…
3. Las Vegas Aces: A'ja Wilson is amazing. You can't count out the two-time champs – especially if they start clicking again like they were before the Olympic break.
4. Connecticut Sun: They have the tools. They have the talent. Can they put it all together for a run?
5. Seattle Storm: The Aces arena tough first draw. But to be the best, you have to defeat the best.
6. Indiana Fever: Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell and company have reached new heights. But championships are still out of reach.
7. Atlanta Dream: Great to see Tina Charles break a pair of records before the postseason – and sneak in on the last day.
8. Phoenix Mercury: The team we least expect to make any noise, so suddenly Diana Taurasi probably will.
ELIMINATED
9. Washington Mystics: From 0-12 to a game away from the playoffs. Still a great story.
10. Dallas Wings: Just a cursed season. At least Arike Ogunbowale played 38 of their 40 games.
11. Los Angeles Sparks: Their time will come.
12. Chicago Sky: Not making the playoffs is a disappointment. At times, it looked like individual stats were a priority over wins and putting their best team on the floor. They don't have it figured out at all.

NFL power rankings after Week 2:
1. Chiefs: Found a way to win against Cincinnati to drop the Bengals to 0-2 and quiet the title fight hype.
2. Bills: Could this finally be the Year? Spotless through two, but it's not how you start, it's how you finish.
3. Steelers: Feels like a "defense wins championships" kind of season so far. Enter Pittsburgh.

5. Texans
6. Vikings

No Consensus: Seahawks-Patriots
We took a look at 20 expert picks from five national media outlets to see if they agreed on who would win today's Seattle Seahawks game.
If 75% or more agree, that's “The Consensus” in our book.
Today, only 13 of 20 are picking the Seahawks, so there's no consensus. Here's how it breaks down:
CBS Sports: 5 of 8 pick the Seahawks
Sporting News: 1 of 1 pick the Seahawks
NBC Sports: 1 of 2 pick the Seahawks
ESPN: 2 of 3 pick the Seahawks
Sports Illustrated: 4 of 6 pick the Seahawks

Last season, we decided not to post a preseason power rankings and let things shake out after Week 1, which led to an interesting initial list based on who ended up 1-0 and 0-1. We were attempting to avoid any offseason bias influencing our rankings later in the year. This season, we tried something different again. We created a preseason list, then averaged the power rankings of six media outlets we respect. The numbers in parentheses below show how far off our picks are from the “consensus” of the six others. In some cases, there might seem to be bias here, but the truth is we are all in on the Bears (and apparently the Jaguars) and way down on the Jets and Packers compared to other outlets. We’ll see how it plays out.
1. Chiefs (Even – consensus No. 1 on all seven sites): They won it all again and, more impressively, won at Buffalo and at Baltimore in the process. How can you pick against them?
2. Ravens (+2): We believed in Baltimore for most of the latter half of last season, right up until the bitter end. We seem to have more faith than others to start, but we’re happy to let it be decided on the field in tonight’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 opener.
3. Lions (-1): If not now, never? Nah, let’s not be negative and ride with the kneecap-gnawers one more season.
4. 49ers (-1)
5. Bills (+2)
6. Eagles (+3)
7. Dolphins (+4)
8. Cowboys (+2)
9. Bengals (-3)
10. Texans (-2)
11. Bears (+5)
12. Packers (-7)
13. Steelers (+2)
14. Jaguars (+6)
15. Buccaneers (+2)
16. Rams (-3)
17. Browns (-3)
18. Jets (-6)
19. Colts (+2)
20. Chargers (-2)
21. Seahawks (+1)
22. Commanders (+4)
23. Falcons (-4)
24. Titans (Even)
25. Saints (Even)
26. Vikings (-3)
27. Cardinals (Even)
28. Raiders (+1)
29. Broncos (-1)
30. Panthers (+2)
31. Giants (-1)
32. Patriots (-1)

WNBA power rankings after Labor Day:
1. New York Liberty: We’re giving them a pass on the Sparks loss, since the Sun and Lynx also had surprising losses.
2. Connecticut Sun: Falling to the surging Fever isn’t as bad as the losses suffered by the teams above and below them, but it’s enough to cloud their rise.
3. Minnesota Lynx: That Wings blowout probably kept them from the top spot this week.
4. Seattle Storm: Keep proving they belong right here when they play the teams above them.
5. Las Vegas Aces: They are as cold coming out of the break as they were hot going in. Having four Olympians has taken a toll.
6. Indiana Fever: The opposite seems true for the Fever, as the rest has paid off immensely – just not enough to pass the Aces… yet.
7. Phoenix Mercury: They weren’t great before the break, and haven’t been since. Yet here they sit at seventh, vulnerable but still squarely in the hunt.
8. Atlanta Dream: This is where they will end up in the playoffs, too.
9. Washington Mystics: That improbable run to a playoff spot is looking impossible again.
10. Dallas Wings: There’s still time to pull it together, but not much.
11. Los Angeles Sparks: None of us are paying enough attention to Rickea Jackson.
12. Chicago Sky: Wins have no doubt been sacrificed for individual accolades. Since these are team rankings, the Sky sit here for now.

WNBA power rankings after Week 9:
1. New York Liberty: Their aerial assault took out the Sun and Sky (twice) in a perfect week.
2. Las Vegas Aces: 3-0 this past week. Is it the return of the red? No, it’s Chelsea Gray. The Aces are 10-1 since she came back.
3. Connecticut Sun: Split a pair this week but stayed on the medal stand despite a Storm rising.
4. Seattle Storm: Had to pass Minnesota after that 91-63 result.
5. Minnesota Lynx: The Lynx lost twice last week to the top two teams in last week’s rankings. The rough stretch continues with two more losses – this time one team moves a slot above and the other one stays just below.
6. Indiana Fever: Feels high, but the Fever have won six of 10 and have the Mercury’s number.
7. Phoenix Mercury: Only clipped the Wings in a tough week.
8. Washington Mystics: Quite the rise for the longtime 2024 cellar-dwellers, but such is life in the WNBA.
9. Los Angeles Sparks: Rickea Jackson had 23 points in 29 minutes in a win at Dallas. She’s just getting started.
10. Dallas Wings: Another winless week for the Wings.
11. Chicago Sky: Is winning still a priority? Fighting to get to 10 points or rebounds with the game long over is not the best look. Just ask Ricky Davis. The Sky stays above the only team they beat this week.
12. Atlanta Dream: The skid hits seven and with only a trip to Minnesota before the break. A bit bleak.

3. Minnesota Lynx: The Lynx lost twice, but it was to the two teams above them.
4. Seattle Storm: *For example, the Storm lost to the Chicago Sky.
5. Las Vegas Aces: *For example, the Aces lost to the Los Angeles Sparks.
6. Phoenix Mercury

WNBA power rankings after Week 7:
1. New York Liberty: On a four-game win streak because the Commissioner’s Cup championship game doesn’t count in the regular season standings.
2. Minnesota Lynx: We elevate the Lynx to first place and they immediately lose to the last-place Wings to end their 11-game losing streak.
3. Seattle Storm: Winning four in a row and seven of 10 is worthy of a place on this week’s medal stand.
4. Las Vegas Aces: Also owners of a four-game winning streak, the champs haven’t regained their familiar spot in the top three of our rankings, but by the end of the season, we suspect they will.
5. Connecticut Sun: Three losses in four games have slowed a dominant start.
6. Atlanta Dream: Giving them a bump after the win over Connecticut.
7. Phoenix Mercury: Trying to decide who this team is. Inconsistent it is, as they’ve now lost three of four.
8. Indiana Fever: Suddenly creeping up the rankings as we try not to overinflate the typical. Winners of six of 10, including a nice win at Phoenix.
9. Chicago Sky: Did the Sky sacrifice a win to save Angel Reese’s double-double streak? Looked that way against the Lynx, with five points in the fourth quarter.
10. Dallas Wings: Beating Minnesota gives the Wings a (temporary?) lift.
11. Washington Mystics: Staying put at 11 after a long run at 12.
12. Los Angeles Sparks: The skid has reached seven.

WNBA power rankings after Week 6 and the Commissioner's Cup Championship:
1. Minnesota Lynx: “We're here.” Cup MVP Napheesa Collier announced the arrival of the Lynx at the top of the power rankings. They even got a hashtag: #LynxRecognize Indeed.
2. New York Liberty: Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Sounds like a film made in New York.
3. Connecticut Sun: Still might be the best team despite the short skid. There I go underrating Minnesota again.
4. Seattle Storm
5. Las Vegas Aces
6. Phoenix Mercury
7. Chicago Sky
8. Atlanta Dream
9. Indiana Fever
10. Washington Mystics
11. Los Angeles Sparks
12. Dallas Wings
