The apparent glare in this photograph is actually physical damage to the copy from which it was scanned. Taken by C. K. Howard-Bury, it shows the 1921 Mount Everest Reconnaissance Expedition loading their supply train at the Tibetan village of Dochen (4,481m). The mountain in the background is Chomolhari.

Mountain Madness co-founder Wes Krause attempted the 7,647m Annapurna Fang in 1984 with Scott Fischer (taking the photo here). Poor weather and lack of food forced them to turn around before the summit and rappel down the mile-high South Face, shown to Krause's right. The Annapurna Fang South Face remains one of the greatest unsolved problems in high-altitude mountaineering.

After a climbing career filled with devastating accidents and literary hits, Joe Simpson (of Touching the Void fame) decided to attempt the North face of the Eiger in Switzerland as a coda to climbing. This photo shows him at the base of the Eiger on one of his six unsuccessful attempts to send the route. His 2001 book The Beckoning Silence, which describes his attempts, remains one of his most popular.

Walter Bonatti climbing on the Pilone Centrale del Fr锚ney on Mont Blanc in 1961.
The route had never been successfully climbed at the time, and a franco-italian team formed to attempt it. This attempt ended in tragedy, as a week long snow storm broke out and only three out of seven climbers survived. Bonatti defined this tragedy as "the most hallucinating tragedy ever happened to expert alpinists on Mont Blanc."

Dr Frederick Cook on Denali at what is now known as "Fake Peak", 1906. While he claimed this was a picture of the summit, later photographic analysis showed this to be false. "Fake Peak" is, in fact, 19 miles away and 4,600 meters below the actual summit of Denali. The initial presentation of this photograph was one of Cook's trademark "complete lies."

Scott Fischer started at the National Outdoor Leadership School as a participant at age 14. He continued in the program as an instructor for years afterward. Michael Allison took this photograph of him climbing in either Wyoming or Utah circa 1970.

Jost Kobusch before climbing Mera Peak in November 2024, via his Instagram (Santa hat photoshopped in by the mods of this blog).
Kobusch summited Mera Peak as part of his acclimatisation period for his fourth solo winter Everest attempt via the West Ridge. This year, he is aiming to reach an altitude of 7,500 meters. Currently, Kobusch has just reached his 3rd camp at about 6,800 meters according to the live tracking feature on his website.
