'Tis the season! With the spring rains comes Cedar Apple Rust. Here, a gall hangs on a branch of an Eastern Red Cedar, one of two host plants needed for this pathogen's life cycle. The other being an apple, crabapple, or related species. The Rust will appear on the apple hosts shortly after bloom as yellow spots. Cedar Apple Rust rarely kills its host, but leaves and twig ends do become disfigured. Have you seem this gall on any cedars near you? I think it looks pretty cool, despite its effects. #cedarapplerust #juniperusvirginiana #commonplantpests (at Simsbury, Connecticut)

When I was young we spent many summer days in this field playing baseball. One year, a neighbor who lived just to the left of where this photo was taken, decided to plant a hedge of Autumn Olive around his property. Now some 35 years later, our field is unrecognizable. That Autumn Olive (along with a few other nasty invasives) has completely taken it over. It has also become a dumping ground for all the neighbors yard waste. This morning I noticed a single Bradford Pear (itself a nasty plant) bursting out from among the tangle. Soon it too will become part of the invasion, as it also spreads relentlessly. I am saddened every time I drive by... #invasives #ecology #stewardship #fail (at Simsbury, Connecticut)
