The Weeknd at Formula 1® - a first for Abu Dhabi
Tumblr media
He was born Abel Tesfaye in Canada, but he took the name The Weeknd just before he burst onto the international music scene a few years ago. In his initial days, he was known more for his strange hairdo, but slowly, the brilliance of his vocals and music began to dawn on music lovers all over the world. He achieved global fame when his slightly notorious ‘I can’t feel my face’ was released three years ago, but he has achieved astonishing album sales and is a global phenomenon today with songs like ‘House of Balloons’ and ‘Call out my name’.
Incidentally, in keeping with its tradition of inviting the best from the world of global music to the Yas Marina Circuit’s after-race concerts, the organisers confirmed The Weeknd as their first big music act for the Grand Prix 2018. The Weeknd at Formula 1® is one of the biggest draws not just for music lovers but car racing lovers too. This is the first Abu Dhabi outing for The Weeknd at Formula 1®, so the concert is tipped to be extra special for all.
Get tickets to watch The Weeknd perform live on Friday, November 23 by logging on to the Yas Marina Circuit portal. Hurry, because the queues are long!
Who else is performing?

This is the final list of musicians performing at the Formula 1® after-race concerts this November 2018, so you should get cracking on buying tickets to attend. You can also get the chance to mingle with several local and international A-list celebrities at the parties after the races.

Racing cars, music, and all-round fun – this November in Abu Dhabi
Some of the biggest names in race car driving and international music are making their way to Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit this November. Question is, are you going to be there?
Tumblr media
It’s bigger, better and more exciting than ever. The Yas Marina Circuit pulls out all the stops to host the biggest car racing event every year at its notable track, and then follows it up with spectacular music concerts to enthral the ticket holders. Last year, it was Pink, Mumford and Sons and J Cole at the after-race concerts. This year, expect Guns N’ Roses, The Weekend and Sam Smith at the F1® after race concerts!
What’s happening at Yas Marina Circuit come November 2018
Tumblr media
The city continues to enjoy balmy days and cool nights in November, as it always does. But there is also a crackle of energy in the air, as there always is – the last race of the Grand Prix Formula One® calendar takes place at the gorgeous Yas Marina Circuit from November 22 to 25. So, fasten your seat belts and get ready to be charmed and thrilled in equal measure.
Ever since the first F1® race took place at the venue in November 2009, this annual event has only gotten bigger in scale and more exciting in its styling. After you revel in the nervous energy and rip-roaring action of the race tracks, you can unwind with some of the biggest names in international music. Every year, the organisers rope in multiple award winning, chart topping acts in international and regional music to entertain fans over the F1® weekend. While race car legends like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel are annual participants in the season’s biggest race, musicians like Beyoncé, Kylie Minogue, Coldplay and Pink have already performed in past editions.
This year, too, the musical entertainment quotient of the race is set to make your pulse race and your heart thrum in unison with acts like The Weekend, Guns N’ Roses and Sam Smith at the F1® weekend.
Tumblr media
You better believe it – this is the music line-up this year. If you’re a fan of these musicians and their music, there’s no better chance to watch them in the flesh. Get a load of the sporting action earlier, and end your evening grooving to the beats of The Weekend (Friday, November 23), Sam Smith (Saturday, November 24) and Guns N’ Roses (Sunday, November 25). None of them have performed in Abu Dhabi before, so you really shouldn’t miss out!
Sam Smith at the F1® is an exciting phenomenon, indeed: not only is this his maiden visit to Abu Dhabi, but the young British musician arrives in the city on the back of stupendous global success. A multiple platinum and gold record artist in the UK and US, he is the winner of prestigious music awards, as well as the Golden Globe and Academy Award for his James Bond ‘Spectre’ song Writing’s on the Wall. He brings to the table a wonderful mix of soulful lyrics, a mesmerising voice and the ability to bring an audience to its feet in live shows.
So, are you going to be there? See you at the Yas Marina F1® races from November 22 to 25, 2018.

7 Amazing Things to Do In Summer in Abu Dhabi
Who says a predominantly desert climate has no winter sports or water-based adventures to offer? Spend your summer in Abu Dhabi and indulge all your senses!
Tumblr media
If you dread the summer in Abu Dhabi – because, let’s face it, it really is too hot to venture outdoors in the day – it’s time you changed your mind this year. While you are cooling off in the air-conditioned environs of your home, the rest of the city is out having the time of its life. This is how you can too[1]:
#1 Drive YAS. Go to YAS Marina Circuit and say ‘Yes!’ to the ultimate thrill ride. This summer at the Yas Marina Circuit brings an action-packed race to the finish when you take the choices of racing cars from around the world for a spin. Check out Formula YAS 3000s as you vroom around the race track in your choice of car – Aston Martin, Mercedes or Ferrari[2] – or take your kids for their first driving lessons in a controlled environment. Drive YAS also incorporates drag racing, Circuit Driver Experiences to get a feel of what the world’s best racers experience in their cars and take some of the wildest rides this summer at the YAS Marina Circuit[3].
Tumblr media
#2 Water sports, anyone? The sweltering summer makes you long for icy cold dips in the pool, but where’s a pool when you need one, right? How about taking the family for a water-filled day of fun at the YAS Waterworld? Spend the day playing various water sports, getting in close proximity with magnificent dolphins and sharks, and experience the most thrilling rides.
#3 More water sports, but while you’re dry. If you’d rather be in the water without getting yourself wet, we recommend going sailing or kayaking. Think about it – the sunshine beats down on you while you set sail or in catamarans and toppers. You can even get a lesson or two before you set off. Wadi Adventure near Jebel Hafeet is best for these sports.
#4 Ooh, ice! Who would have thought there could be ice in the middle of a hot summer, but there you have it. Zayed Sports City’s Ice Rink is the place to be if you want to feel cool and have some exercise and fun all rolled into one great afternoon. Learn to skate (if you don’t already know how to, that is) or go to the disco with your gang of friends. Chill out and say a temporary goodbye to the scorching summer.
Tumblr media
#5 Be a beach baby. Abu Dhabi has an enviable shoreline that seems to whisper your name in the summer months. Make a day of it – take your family to the beach, soak up the sunlight, eat at the restaurants near the shore, and just bond. Check out the Corniche, Saadiyat and Mirfa beaches, among others.
#6 Brush up on art. If this summer is when you want to reconnect with your artistic side, head to the Manaarat Al Saadiyat, a 15,000 square meter centre for arts and culture. Understand the origins of Abu Dhabi by listening to The Saadiyat Story, or browse through beautiful historic and contemporary art in the four galleries here. There’s also a theatre that screens documentaries, and a cozy restaurant with delicious eats.
Tumblr media
#7 Go the mall. When all else fails, just go to the various malls in Abu Dhabi, where you get a wide choice in shopping, entertainment, and food.

Here's Where To Have Your Next Annual Meet
An annual, informal meeting of former classmates and colleagues calls for a space that is luxurious, beautiful and accessible to everything you might need. How about trying The Paddock at the Yas Marina Circuit?
Get-togethers are always fun, aren’t they? Especially those where former classmates or colleagues meet up after a long time.
Tumblr media
Attending school and college with a group of people for years forges a special bond that endures over the years. Many of us hardly realise the shared camaraderie and bonding that we experience with our classmates while we are still at school or college. It is only when we grow up and venture into the outside world in search of jobs, that we first look back and become nostalgic about our carefree days in school.
The same nostalgia applies to former work mates, with whom you have many shared experiences. Workplace friendships often stand the test of time, and some of the strongest bonds are forged at the office. But when you change jobs and go to another place of work, you make new relationships – however, you yearn to meet your old work buddies over a meal, or to catch up on the latest gossip.
You finally decide to do something about it – and organise a get-together comprising your former classmates or work colleagues. You draw up a list of people for the meet, then set a likely date. Meanwhile, you contact everybody to find out which date is most suitable for them. Finally, the date is locked and most people have confirmed their participation. It is now time to find a good venue.[1]
Try The Paddock at Yas Marina Circuit.
What is The Paddock at the Yas Marina Circuit?
Tumblr media
If you’re planning an exciting get-together of former classmates and colleagues, you need a large space that encourages attendees to mill about and make desultory conversation. The space must also have proper air conditioning, top of the line catering and refreshments, good audio-visual facilities, and clear access to the washrooms, among other attributes. There is just such a space right in here in Abu Dhabi, and you should book it soon – it’s called The Paddock[2].
The Paddock is a luxurious space comprising 12 luxury suites, with a rooftop terrace and a separate enclosure for indoor events. It looks over the Yas Marina Circuit’s stupendous F1 track, which makes for a scenic view as the get together is in progress. Meanwhile, you can also have some amount of outdoor seating with two of the 12 suites sporting shaded terraces with space for seating outside.
If you are wondering whether The Paddock can host as many people as you think will show up, rest assured of the space’s size: it is designed to host up to 552 people quite comfortably[3].

Kart the Safest Way at Yas Marina
The Yas Marina runs a state-of-the-art karting facility where you can take professional lessons and race in a controlled, safe environment.
Tumblr media
Karting looks deceptively simple, but you still need to follow some ground rules to get it right and extract the most fun out of it. Bear the following points in mind before you venture out to the Yas KartZone for professional racing[1]:
·         Sit correctly. Slouching in your seat can affect your performance and grip. Sit comfortably with your back against the seat, and don’t lean forward at any point.
·         Grip the wheel in symmetry. Maintain a ’10 and 2’ clock hands position on the wheel to get the best grip. Your hands must mirror each other exactly.
·         Don’t look back. Always look ahead on the track to anticipate your own next move. Backtracking and thinking about the mistake of a second ago will affect your race.
·         Ride smooth. Avoid braking, unnecessary swerving, bumping into others, and decelerating abruptly. Maintain discipline and karting decorum at all times.
·         Follow the best. It is okay to trail during the race, but keep your eyes on the leaders and maintain a safe distance at first. Steadily build your speed to catch up with them without accelerating right at the start.
Now that basic karting rules are out of the way, make your way to the Yas KartZone for some really thrilling rides.
How to go karting in Yas KartZone
Tumblr media
The YAS KartZone maintains an ‘Arrive and Drive’ karting schedule daily from 2 pm to 9.30 pm. However, the karts may not be available on certain days, so be sure to check before you arrive. The Yas KartZone is normally fully booked for corporate events, so checking ahead will save a trip.
But once you’re in, it will be hard to get out again. It is a state-of-the-art facility where you can get professional inputs on karting the right way. It is a fully secure and controlled environment, where even younger age groups can learn karting safely.
Yas KartZone lets you hire racing gear (gloves, helmet, overall, knee pads and safety covers) but you must get your own training shoes. Besides, there is a trained personnel standing guard at various points to keep watch on racers on racing days. You are also provided with race results so you can compare your own performance every time. The race itself is a fully enjoyable affair, as you navigate every turn and bump with finesse and mounting excitement.
youtube
However, there are a few rules to follow[2]:
·         You must sign in before the race with full details
·         You must change into race gear and wear training shoes strictly – no high heeled shoes or sandals are allowed
·         Racers under 17 years are allowed to race, but only when accompanied by an adult guardian who must sign a waiver in that racer’s name
·         Participants under 8 years of age are not allowed
·         Participants must be at least 1.3 metres tall
·         You are given a full technical briefing once you take your seat prior to the race. You are given tips on improving your techniques and racing better than before
·         Your friends and family members are welcome to come and watch for free

7 Things You Can Do In Dubai during a Short Stay
We list the seven most stupendous things you can do in Dubai on your next visit – private driving tuitions in racing included.
youtube
There is very little about Dubai that does not shock and awe the visitor. Some of the biggest buildings in the world are located here, as are the most daring engineering marvels. You might be left confused about what to see and do first – so we compiled a handy list for you:
1 Take private driving tuitions on a race track. Kickstart your Dubai vacation with some heart-stopping action – we’re talking about an adventure in a real-life F1 setting at the Yas Marina Circuit. Did you know that it is possible to take private driving tuitions at the Yas racing school?[1] These private driving tuitions help you prepare for the advanced racing course to follow, and which will give you a license to race at the circuit. The private driving tuitions are imparted by experienced motorsport racers, and they’re a lot of fun.
Tumblr media
2 Go skiing. A hot desert climate and lots of ambition – that’s Dubai’s secret. Its temperature pattern has not stopped Dubai from building Ski Dubai, an indoor ski resort, the only one in the Middle East region[2]. It is located inside the Mall of the Emirates and it lets you enjoy all things snow-related, from skiing to tobogganing. There are some adorable penguins to look at as well!
3 Visit an erstwhile fishing village. Bold and shiny Dubai has a rich history which very few tourists know about. If you want to take a walk back in time, head to the Bastakiya Quarter, the city’s historic district that used to be an old fishing village[3]. It is so named because the Bastaks, who were Iranian traders, settled here in the 19th Century. It has wind towers and old buildings that are now converted into museums and watchtowers. It is an excellent place to revisit Dubai’s roots and cultural institutions.
4 Shop at the largest shopping mall in the world. Dubai is one of the world’s shopping hotspots, and when you’re in the city, it is mandatory to visit the biggest shopping mall in the universe – the Dubai Mall[4]. It is a massive edifice comprising over 1,200 shops, a huge aquarium, ice rink, multiplex and many gaming spaces for kids. You can also hop across to the Dubai Fountain just outside the Mall – it is the largest synchronised dancing water fountain in the world.
Tumblr media
5 Marvel at Jumeirah Mosque. The Jumeirah Mosque invites people of all faith to come inside its sanctum[5]. You will love its intricate white façade, its sweeping architecture and the painted panels inside. Be sure to dress modestly, without showing your arms or legs, and women must also wear a headscarf before visiting. The mosque is one of Dubai’s shining examples of culture and old learning.
6 Get a gold rush. What’s a trip to Dubai without a look at the gold souks? The city’s traditional gold souk is located along the Dubai creek south of Deira, and it is the glitziest quarter of the city[6]. You can find a wide variety of pure gold jewellery there, from necklaces to toe rings. This is one of the most premium gold trading centres in the world. You can also find silver and platinum jewellery here. If you’re not much interested in precious metals, hop across to the spice souk just a short distance away.
7 Desert your surroundings. When the shine and gloss of Dubai get too much for you, book yourself into a tour with the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve[7]. It is the first national park in the UAE located on the fringes of Dubai. It is a research-cum-tourism facility where you can go sand boarding, dune driving or even dabble in archery. You can even stay the night in a Bedouin tent.

When it’s cycling genius and guru Fabian Cancellara, it’s the first time that he is down in Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit for the most anticipated ‘Chase Cancellara – TrainYAS’ event.
What is ‘Chasing Cancellara’?
Tumblr media
As brilliant as it is inspiring, the ‘Chasing Cancellara’ concept is aimed at teaching both amateurs and cycling pros the ins and outs of professional racing in different formats. Spearheaded by former professional Swiss cyclist and Olympian Fabian ‘Spartacus’ Cancellara – one of the legendary names in the sport – it invites racers to ‘chase’ Cancellara and race with him in different parts of the world, across different race formats. It is a unique test of skill, endurance, and competitiveness, and it teaches participating racers many valuable insights into professional cycling like the big names in the sport.[1]
You are bound to emerge a stronger, better cyclist once you have raced with the legendary Spartacus. The great news is, he comes to your city for the first time in March 2018, right here at the Yas Marina Circuit[2]!
Get, set, RACE!
youtube
Riding with and even against a double Olympic champion such as the Cancellara can never be easy – but who expects it to be? This event is as much about getting deep into the spirit of cycling as it is about racing against one of the legends of the game on a fantastic turf. Train with Spartacus in ‘Chasing Cancellara – TrainYAS’ and compare your timings, get notes on correct techniques, and a whole lot more from the interaction.
Here’s how the event’s going down[3]:
·         Teams comprising two riders will be drawn up
·         Each team does two laps of Yas Marina Circuit F1 track in a closed lap. This is a time trial
·         Fabian Cancellara rides alone at the end. The aim is for each team to beat the time that he sets
·         The three fastest teams and category winners during qualification all make it to the final
·         All finalist teams start at the same time on an identical course, and Cancellara will chase them a few seconds later. The time recorded now is of the team’s second rider
·         The race goes from 9 pm to 11 pm
·         You get two ‘Chasing Cancellara – TrainYAS’ T-shirts, one finisher medal and one finisher certificate if you beat Cancellara
·         The registration cost is AED 105, inclusive of VAT for the team

A Sneak Peek into the F1 Abu Dhabi 2017 Season
Here’s a lowdown on all that you missed out on at the F1® races at the YAS Marina Circuit in 2017.
Tumblr media
Hordes of cheering crowds, the growl of the car as it overtakes another, the screech of tyres at the penultimate bend, faces set in grim concentration as the finish line looms closer…it was a sport worthy of every accolade it received. The F1® Abu Dhabi 2017 season was a visual spectacle like no other.
Delivering on its promise of a high-adrenaline race on November 26 at the famed YAS Marina Circuit here in Abu Dhabi, the F1® Abu Dhabi 2017 season ended on a high note, setting the stage for an exciting comeback for all in 2018. The last race of the F1® season was high on shocks, thrills, glamour and the pursuit for the ultimate prize[1].
Always a treat…
Tumblr media
The YAS Marina F1® track was formally opened for professional car racing in 2009. It was the last F1® event of the calendar, and it continues to be the year-ending race till date[2]. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as it is fondly known, is held at one of the most stunning race car locations in the world. The track was designed by noted architect Hermann Tilke, and is rife with hairpin bends over 5 km of racing track[3]. What’s more, the race is the only GP race to be held in twilight, making the driving conditions that much more challenging with the stadium lights on during the race.
Who raced?
Tumblr media
Before the four days of thumping racing action from November 23 (practice run) to November 26, 2017, tickets for the race had already flown off the shelves. Attendees had booked themselves not just for the best seats in the house for the actual races, but for the post-race concerts, too. This year’s concert line-up included biggies like Pink, Mumford & Sons, Kendrick Lamar and DJ Calvin Harris.
Meanwhile, the racing driver line-up and their respective cars looked like this:
·         Ferrari: Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel
·         Haas: Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen
·         McLaren: Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne
·         Red Bull: Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen
·         Renault: Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr
·         Force India: Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon
·         Mercedes: Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas
·        Sauber: Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein
·         Toro Rosso: Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley
·         Williams: Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll
In a thrilling finish that made every person’s hair stand on end as they yelled themselves hoarse, as an untroubled Valtteri Bottas raced to the finish line from pole, ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.[4]
And now, the schedule for the Abu Dhabi 2018 season is out, and so are tickets. Get booking and race you next year!
