Suffolk Cty Retired Police Detectives Association
3K posts
The Suffolk County Retired Police Detectives Association was formed in 1988 to protect the benefits of our members since they have no voice in labor negotiations. We provide our members with an opportunity to socialize through meetings and other social activities and assist the families of deceased members. The association is a member of the Alliance of Public Retiree Organizations of New York State. The alliance is a combined group of 45 retiree organizations including Police, Fire, Teachers, C.S.E.A. and the Retired Public Employees Association. Combined our membership represents over 500,000 retirees.

President’s Message
Tumblr media
Hope everyone is doing well, winter up here is still hanging on in the Northeast, but February is here and March waiting in the wings. Maybe that ground hog will see an early spring.
We lost another RDA member this past month:  Fred (Freddie) Eaton, a very great man in which I had the pleasure of working with at the Third Precinct.  Fred was not only a great person, he was also a hard working detective if you knew him.  Fred RIP.
Harvey Bittner was once again at Good Samaritan Hospital and is now transferred to Our Lady of Consolation  to be receiving intravenous treatment twice a day.  Please keep Harvey in your good thoughts and prayers.
Harvey is in the Fatima Section, Room 206.                                                     His phone # is:  631 622 5630.
Harvey will be at Our Lady of Consolation at least two weeks and would appreciate any phone calls.
Calls as I said before, are a good RX when you are sick.   Full info will follow as received.
Bob Hulse if you did not know has been visiting our SCPD members at Good Samaritan and Southside Hospitals, I am guessing for over 45 years and he also brings each a newspaper.
Thank You for all you do Bob.  Definitely a comfort for one in the hospital.
I have received some emails, calls reference the cashing of RDA dues checks for the 2018 calendar year.  I just want to let the members know your check will be cashed in a timely manner by the Treasurer.  He does not cash just one at a time, but cashes groups of checks when the Financial Secretary retrieves the checks from our PO Box.  Hope this answers some of the questions and maybe the delays.
While I am on the dues for 2018, please forward them back to our PO Box ASAP.
On January 29, I met with Chief of Department Cameron to set up a date for the RDA dinner.  Chief Cameron's staff scheduled Friday, May 11, 2018, as the Department’s Memorial Service.
It therefore, looks like (maybe) the RDA Memorial Dinner will be Thursday, May 10.   The RDA Entertainment Committee will keep the membership informed, as this highly successful dinner gets closer.                                                                                                                               Chief Cameron also advised of the following SCPD events:
SCPD Police Week is Monday, May 7, thru Thursday, May 10,        Department Awards Ceremony is May 9, Stony Brook University &        the SCPD Family Day will be held on Saturday, May 12.                        Write these dates down on your calendars.
The department still does not know who will be the next Suffolk County Police Department Commissioner.  Any rumors you have heard could be false or even true.  If I hear anything that is concrete,  the RDA Board and I will inform the membership.

Albany Report
Tumblr media
The Alliance meeting was scheduled for January 16th but was cancelled because of heavy snow in the Albany area for safety reasons.
I have been doing some digging around and have some information that will be a concern for us retirees.
Governor Cumo has proposed two changes to the Executive Budget that would have an impact on retirees in the New York State Health Insurance Plan.
Cap the Medicare reimbursement rate at the current level of $134 per month. The current statue requires that reimbursement of the premium charge without a specifying a dollar amount.
Eliminate the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) which is paid to retirees who have an adjusted gross income above $85,000  single filling status. This change would relate to amounts incurred after January 1 2018.
On another matter the Governor wants to give a break to the illegal immigrant Dreamers by extending free college tuition to students who were brought to the US illegally as kids. The Governor wants to cut retirees benefits that were earned over many years of work. And give free collage to Illegal immigrants.
Is the Governor great or what ?

I shall open this month's column with a puzzle, as told to me by my 12 yr old grandson:
What loses a head in the morning, but gets one back at night?
I shall let you ponder that, answer to follow later in the column.  This will perhaps ensure your reading this column this month.
I heard from my old "senior man" in 115 earlier this month, Billy Parrish, one helluva cop, a mentor to me and I will never forget my couple of years with him riding the roads of Wyandanch.  Get well old friend, enjoy your new 'LAPTOP"...
Hello to Freddy Mazzella, our old Sergeant & your neighbor.
All those "115 in pursuit northbound on Straight Path, active file 1 with occupants" ... with the blood pumping through our veins.  Anyone who has had one of these will understand the "rush"
Onto business, through the "printed word" of the Retired Police Association of NY State, names from the past appear as having made a financial contribution to the organization, quantity not important, many of you will have worked with these fellow pensioners in the past and hopefully will be happy to see their names.  Hope it rekindles some happy moments:
John W Streeter, John Askew (another 115er), Daniel Mulhearn,                  John Stanton, Daniel Luccari, George Walling, Suzanne Boyd,            John Doucette, Robert Doyle, James Byrne, Ray Gutowski,                      Patrick Alu, John Rodriguez, Henry Hambel, Bob Turano,                            Paul Stasky, Robert Mylott, MichaelStoeckert, Thomas Murphy,                  Joe Centorelli, Barry Charles, Terrence Fanning,                                        John Rondinelli, Mark Maieli, George Trksak (a/k/a "Deadeye"),                                  MaryAnne Villardi-Feonstein, Steve Cleary, John Delaney,                   John Gordon, James O'Connor, James Kevins, Ronald Ruppe,           Tony Puzzo, Nicholas Sgaglione, Peter Falcetta, Sebastian Demarco, Michael Belkin, Howard Sedell, Bob Gorsky, Charles Colan,              George Doerning, Charles Robertson, John McGarvey.
The answer to the puzzle is a "pillow" ... now go tell that to your grandkids.
Frank Sciortino, Robert Kellenberger, Arthur Brewer, Daniel Desantis, Kathleen Bonney, Keith Bettinger.
As I write these names for you to realize these pals are still with us, you should make contact just to say ...
Tumblr media
I realize the being retired almost 32 years makes one out of touch,  I do not recognize most of these names.
The offer to take over this column is still there.
I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane and take some happiness, in knowing that these are still with us
“Just” learned of the passing of Freddy Eaton, over this past weekend.    I worked with him in the 3rd Sqd mid 70's he was well liked and very competent. He ran a moving business and hired many of the guys to help out when needed.  As I remember. he was an avid ice hockey player and good golfer.  Unfortunately he made the local papers recently when suffering from dementia, he got "lost" for about two days but was found in a nearby location.  Rest in Peace brother..
Let us remember our soldiers and first responders protecting us.
Respectfully submitted,
Tony Puzzo

The Mustang Pursuit Vehicle
Purchased strictly for its quickness and agility, the Ford Mustang pursuit vehicle was assigned to Highway Patrol in the early 90's.
Equipped with a 5.0 liter V-8 it could quickly catch up to law breakers on the LIE.
There were some drawbacks however, transporting prisoners was difficult because it was a 2 door coupe. The trunk was small, limiting the amount of equipment it could carry.
The Mustang had a short service life because it was built with unibody construction, meaning it had no chassis, only spot welded sheet metal framework, which did not hold up well when
it was involved in an accident which damaged it beyond repair.
Tumblr media
A little aside information by below writer about this particular vehicle.
Besides being the fastest P.D. in the fleet, it kept the mechanics quite busy at the police garage.  It  appeared that many of the patrol officers in the highway section had never before driven such a vehicle.  It was equipped with a transmission that was STANDARD  SHIFT.
For those of those not familiar with this option, it meant the driver had to be agile enough to engage the clutch and manually shift the transmission into gear.
Well, the garage mechanics  became familiar with the 5.0's clutch, transmission and drive train in short order.
Not to be overlooked was the short life of its tires.
I'm not aware whether the slang 5.0 , denoting Police, originated when the department utilized the Ford Mustang.
Respectfully,                                                                                                  Fred Kirschenheiter.                                                                              Retired Detection Arson Squad.
