One day, while Duran and Merde were on guard duty, they spotted a small Wren, a child, they were lost, and alone. Duran didn't want to harm the child, seeing them as innocent, they had meant no ill will, how could they have known, they were just a child. ….Merde on the other hand, he did not hesitate, as soon as he spotted the child, all he saw was Wren, those that gave him those scars, those that caused him so much pain and shame… He quickly aimed for the Wren.

Duran reacted in time, managing to tackle Merde before he could throw the spear. Merde was confused and enraged, that his own brother could let some Wrenish scum leave with no consequence. They fought, punching, kicking, clawing, Merde feeling betrayed by his kin, and Duran doing whatever he could to stop his brother, the one he always looked up to, from murdering an innocent.

and in this fight, Merde had gotten free of Duran's grip, and was moments from impaling the Wren-

...

Merde looked down at his chest, he saw the hole, blood oozing from the fresh wound. He looked back, seeing his beloved Little Brother, Duran… had shot him, with…. a Wrenish weapon….

... Merde collapsed…dead…….the child, long gone, running home….Duran stood over his Brother's body, gun still in hand, frozen in shock…

it wasn't long after that the rest of the guards, and tribe soon came up to see the scene. Duran was Banished, Disowned by his Tribe… He left the Cenote, Gun still in possession. he reached one of the Wrenish encampments, he would have been killed on the spot, if not for the child having remembered him, and essentially putting a good word in for him. and shortly there after, he headed North, the The Great Plains, using his knowledge of the Wrenish to eventually become a Sheriff.

Gonna go on a lore rant about him now, so buckle the fuckle in folks.

His name is Duran Buro, he's desert Locathah cowboy sheriff (Locathah are essentially fish people) he comes from a tribe that have lived in a giant underground water-filled cave, which is connected to a natural Cenote in the desert. They have evolved and adapted to the desert conditions by becoming semi-amphibious, they can survive for long periods on land, being able to get by with whatever little water they may find.

as for his backstory,

Growing up Duran started out as a scavenger/gatherer/hunter, venturing out of the tribe's home to get food, water, etc one day he found some ruins, and over the course of (months to years) he explored them and other nearby sites and he gained a bit of a fascination with ruins, history, myths, etc

then at some point, some settlers by the name of The Wrenish (Wren) began to expand into the frontier, encroaching on his tribe's territory, taking resources, and that led to Duran changing from a scavenger to a guard.

now, when the Wrenish and Duran's tribe first met, there was a lot of conflict, but eventually they came to an agreement, a pact. The Locathah had the Cenote as well as a land surrounding it for scavenging purposes, and outside that area, the settlers could set up their camps and towns and what not. any Wren or Locathah who enter an area that is restricted are to be killed, or punished, depends most of the time.

The Wrenish and the Tribe were still distrusting and held some animosity to each other.

now, the Wren are more technologically advanced, around about 1800s cowboy level, they have firearms. but the Tribe are not, they tend to use spears. Duran, being naturally curious, would often sneak out and watch the Wrenish, observing, learning. he was fascinated by their technology. and at some point he stole a gun from one.

Duran had a brother, Merde, He was slightly older than Duran, and fought against the Wrenish during the initial conflicts, and had gotten a few scars, and from those conflicts, he grew a hatred for the Wrenish and everything about them/they made. after the Pact was made, Merde and Duran were both guards. and one day, something happened that changed the course of Duran's life forever...
