I'd agree. In the anime, before the dragon, it's a retinue of episodes just to emulate the manga. While it serves to establish characters, their relationships, the world they live in, and develop all of those, it spends a large amount of time doing relatively little. This, I feel, is because of the manga; the anime is adapted from a manga of a different genre. Dunmeshi the anime is Slice of Life - Action, as evidenced by the pacing and focuses of each episode. This is contrasted with the manga, an Adventure - Slice of Life. The studio had the monumental task of adapting material, from another media, into a different genre. That I feel explains why the material they used doesn't mesh well with the way it is presented.

Fun fact: the guys at our college’s geology department prop out the doors with their samples. I totally understand why but as someone whose work with samples is necessarily super delicate and sterile it fucks me up so bad
