“W-We will?” Evan asked, perking up a bit. A friend to go karaoking with. He could possibly have a friend to go karaoking with! Possibly. He couldn’t help grinning in excitement, “Mine too! Um, 80’s mostly. Oh, wasn’t it in th-the, um, the 70’s that Grease came out?”
“Oh, for sure. It’s mandatory.” Zoe joked. She smiled at the mention of Grease, nodding, “Yeah! Late 70′s, I think. God, I love that movie.” Zoe smirked over at Evan, “You wanna sing some Grease?”

Evan smiled, “You were awesome. And yeah, I think you’re right. I don’t really go to, um, I-I never went karaoking before so I wouldn’t have known.” I never had anyone to go with. He mentally shook the thought away, “What other kinds of songs are you into?”
Zoe smiled and tossed her hair, “Thanks.” She giggled. “Well, we’ll have to go sometime!” Zoe offered both because she sensed Evan’s slight change in mood and because she’s genuinely excited to go with him. “I kinda like everything. But, the 70′s and 80′s are probably my favorite eras of music.” Zoe smiled and shrugged, “And jazz, I guess.”

“Well, I always have fun with you.” Zoe smiled, looking into the mirror. “Oh god. How do you do that?” She laughed, tucking her hair behind her ear. “You were right about this lipstick.” Zoe turned toward Heather, holding her arms out for a hug. “Thank you, baby.”
Heather smiled wide. “You look so good! See, you are pretty!” She hugged Zoe tightly. “You’re welcome sweetheart. I knew you needed something, I could tell. If you want, you can have this lipstick. I don’t use it really, because the red doesn’t go with my hair as well as it does yours.” She smiled again. “So, how are things? How’re your mom and dad? And Connor?”
“Well, don’t sound so surprised.” Zoe teased lightheartedly, giggling at her own joke. She smiled, “Are you sure?” She looked back at the mirror, with an eyebrow raised, “I mean, I guess I do look kinda hot in this shade of red.” Zoe shrugged, “Dad’s working a lot and mom’s really into hot pilates right now. But, Connor’s good. I think he’s in a pretty good place right now.” She smiled fondly, proud of her brother and happy to say that he’s doing well. “What about you? How’re things with the McNamara’s?”
“I’m feeling very makeup-y right now.”
Heather squealed. “Perfect!” She grabbed Zoe’s hands and led her over to her vanity, full of all colours of eyeshadow and lipstick and blush and all other kinds of makeup. “Oh my gosh Zoe I have the perfect colour for you you need to use this wine red lipstick!”

“Oh, wow. You pulled out the jazz hands.” Zoe teased, mimicking Evan’s actions. She giggled, “So, have you practiced this choreography before? Or are you just always Kenny Ortega?”
Evan blushed but laughed all the same, “I’d say I’m more of a Jerry Mitchell, to be honest.” He joked before saying more genuinely, “I never thought I’d m-meet another Whitney Houston fan around my age. This is pretty surreal to me.”
“You know what, I see it. You’re very Jerry.” Zoe jokingly agreed. “Well, here I am. And besides, you might just not be looking in the right places. If you go to any karaoke place ever, I guarantee you’ll see at least two young people singing Whitney. In the mean time, I’m here to sing poorly with you.” she laughed.

“Babe…” Zoe almost refused. She almost said that she wasn’t sure the other Heathers would even let her in. But, one good look at Heather’s hopeful smile and Zoe couldn’t bear to let her down. “We would have a blast.” she chuckled, “And we would get so many good pictures.”
A wide smile spread across Heather’s face. “I know right?!” She hugged Zoe. “It would be so much fun! Me, you, and everyone else just having fun and letting loose. It would be so, so, so much fun!” She pulled up the lipstick and gently applied it to Zoe’s face. “Beautiful!”

Zoe laughed, hopping up on her bed, “Yeah, I wanna dance with somebody.” She exaggeratedly pointed at Evan, “With somebody who loves me. Somebody who-” Zoe cracked up as she struggled to hit the high note. She jumped down to sit on her bed, posing like an idiot. In the spirit of Whitney.
Evan grins, shoulders shaking in silent laughter before continuing “Loooooves me!” He practically screamed to reach it and stretched his arms out at Zoe’s pose in a little ‘ta-da’ gesture, shaking his hands as the song came to an end. And then he’s laughing again as he plops down at the edge of her bed.
“Oh, wow. You pulled out the jazz hands.” Zoe teased, mimicking Evan’s actions. She giggled, “So, have you practiced this choreography before? Or are you just always Kenny Ortega?”

This wasn’t how Evan thought his first time at the Murphy’s would go but really, he wasn’t complaining. For one, the parents weren’t home and as much as he wanted to meet them, learning that they were temporarily away made him instantly relax. Second, he was with Zoe in her room belting out to the greatest music of all time and that was worth all the anxiety of coming over. He was wondering if Connor would be there too but so far he saw none of him. Maybe he was out with a friend? Evan didn’t want to call and ask, worrying that it’d come off as too clingy. So he let it be, trusted Connor – like he should – and enjoyed himself. And boy did he enjoy himself.
“Ohh, I wanna dance with somebody–” He sang along to Whitney’s voice, hands curling on his chest with exaggerated movements of yearning, done more for the laughs than anything else. “I wanna feel the heat with somebody!”

“Oh, it’s fine, I just died.”
“These are some good-ass fries.”
“Stop being tall.”
“I just think he’s a really beautiful person.”
“If I puke on you, will you still be my friend?”
“I’ll tell you what I think. I think I know what I’m thinking.”
“I indulged in ice cream last night, trying to finish whatever catch-up homework I could do.”
“If the question is ‘what am I up to right now?’ the answer is probably something shady, let’s be real.”
“Rain is one of my favorite weathers.”
“I wanted to fall asleep, but I don’t like my teacher.”
“The man is a dictator-tot.”
“I’m feeling very makeup-y right now.”
“Whoever peed on the toilet seat needs Jesus.”
“It really gets my good side. Though, I don’t actually have one. I hope it’s my inside, but I wouldn’t know, ‘cause I haven’t seen it.”
“I got here two hours early, but now it’s raining and I’m locked out.”
“We’re so immature. We’re useless.”
“You’re going to cry, and the tears are going to drip down on my face.”
“So, I may have just eaten an entire cheesecake.”

“Fashionable?” Zoe asked, flabbergasted. She tried not to criticize Heather’s friends. It didn’t help anything, it just made Heather feel bad. But, god, those guys represented everything Zoe resented about high school. She shook the negativity from her mind. Zoe squinted one eye open, worried by Heather’s short and quiet reply. “Heath, are you okay?”
Heather smiled at the nickname. She pushed it all back down. “Yeah, Zo, I’m okay. You know, though, I think of you gave them a chance you’d like them. You’d totally love the parties we throw. You should come to the next one!” She smiled, urging Zoe to say yes. “It would be so much fun!”

“Maybe Heather should see a doctor?” Zoe tried her best to keep her face still, but her face still scrunched up for a moment. “And why would anyone sleep with Kurt Kelly?” Zoe laughed.
“I think she should. Heather says she just needs to grow up. Bulimia isn’t fashionable anymore, now everyone has ADD and anxiety and depression and stuff,” Heather replied. She shrugged. “I dunno.” She wanted to tell Zoe. But she couldn’t really.

Heather wrinkled her nose at the thought of the band boys putting their mouths all over their instruments. “Ew. Gross.” She signaled for Zoe to close her eyes, to work on her eyeshadow. “They’re ok. Heather’s still got bulimia. And Heather’s sleeping with Kurt Kelly.”

Heather shook her head and grabbed the lipstick and blush and eye shadow. “No, no, no. You’ll look absolutely beautiful, there’ll be boys lining up around the whole school.” She smiles and moved her best friends hair from her eyes, before starting to get to work. “So how’s jazz band?”
Zoe resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she giggled bashfully, “Thanks, Heather.” She smiled, “It’s going pretty good. It’d be a lot better if the brass section used their instruments for anything other than kissing practice.” Zoe teased, “But other than that, we’re phenomenal.” She all but cracked up at herself. “How’re the Heathers?”
“I’m feeling very makeup-y right now.”

Zoe laughed at her friend’s excitement, following her towards the vanity. She ogled all of the makeup before looking over at Heather. “If you really don’t think I’ll look like a clown, I’ll give it a try.” she chuckled.

He didn’t move away when she came closer, his eyes drifting to the paper she held out and he gently took it in his hands, their fingers brushing for just a moment. Evan could grasp a bit of how the tune would sound. Back then he was in choir and had piano lessons. He was taught to read music sheets and play along but it’d been years and he admittedly was more than a little rusty. Evan raised his head up at her and nodded with a soft smile, “I’d like that, please.” From what he could manage to solve in his head the music was great. But they were just bits and pieces so he kept his thoughts to himself for now till he heard it all fully. Still he knew it’d sound beautiful. More than in fact. As odd as it was, Evan felt like he’d heard her a hundred times before and each time it was amazing. For someone he’d known for a short time he believed in her fully.
Zoe reached over and grabbed her guitar from its case beside her. She rested it on her lap, realizing that she felt like the kind of guy who brings his guitar to parties, hoping that people might like him. “Anyway... here’s Wonderwall.” Zoe nervously giggled, playing what she was pretty sure was the first chord of the song. “Alright, alright. Sorry, here we go.” she cleared her throat and took a breath. Eyes closed, she began to play.

For some unknown reason his cheeks grew warmer as he followed, dropping to sit beside her but making sure there was a respectable distance between them. The last thing he wanted to do was make her uncomfortable by sitting too close and he was still torn between feeling comfortable or incredibly nervous around her. It was weird.
Evan shook his head, “I think it’ll be great.”
Zoe smiled and, without thinking, scooted closer to Evan. She let out a nervous laugh as she handed over the sloppy sheet music. “Here.” She stared at him for a moment, searching for some approval or... something. Zoe cleared her throat, looking down at the papers in Evan’s hands. “I don’t even know if you read music or anything. But I could play something for you... If you want. You don’t have to.” She looked back up to his face as she backpedaled. Sharing her music with Evan, made Zoe feel like she was showing him everything about herself. Which terrified her to no end. She was a teenage girl- she wasn’t all that sure that she liked herself. So why would he?

Connor ran his hands through his hair and sighed. At least she knew where she was. And he knew how to get out to her. “Okay. Zoe it sounds like you had some cheap gin. You’ll live but don’t drink anymore.” He started the car and began to drive towards the party, with her on speaker so he could make sure she was okay. “I’m on my way to get you. Don’t go anywhere, especially with any guys.” The particular guy coming to mind was Billy Nolan, a fifth year senior who could always be found creeping on younger girls.
Zoe shook her head, her face scrunched up, “No, I won’t. No more drinking. I’m tapping out.” Someone opened the door to the party and the noise instantly spilled out into the hall. Zoe heard a smash followed by loud groans of disappointment and annoyance. She kept her eyes closed and held her head in her hands. “I don’t feel very good, Connor.” She tried to focus on her breathing, letting out a small breathy laugh at Connor’s warning. “I think you’re really overestimating me if you think I could stand up and go anywhere with anyone right now.” Zoe hiccupped.

what seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?
There was one time, when the Murphy’s were at their favorite ice cream place À La Mode. They were all comfortable together and they laughed and had genuine fun. Zoe dropped her ice cream cone and Larry laughed and gave her his. And Cynthia kept giving Connor change for the candy machine in the corner. She knows they’re capable of doing that, of being a family. But it feels like so long since they’ve tried.
for what would your character give their life?
(previously answered)
how does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?
Zoe tries to be cool, which is kind of a lost cause since she joined jazz band but still. She tries to seem confident and nonchalant. But instead, Zoe ends up making really bad jokes and sometimes comes off as overly blunt or easily bored.
what is your character afraid of?
