I was looking for reference pictures of Stede's S2 rings for a cosplay and ended up going on a weird research journey over one of them.

Sweet. Just gonna take a quick browse through amazon to see if I can find something that fits the bill. I'll start with that big ol' gold one with the cross.

Ayyyy winner, winner chicken dinner.

Wait... an exorcism ring? Didn't that priest say something about the Vatican and an exorcism or something about exorcists before he died?

Yup.

Well, great load of help that was for priest guy...

So Stede stole that dude's suit and his rings, one of which is some kind of supposed Christian protection charm to ward off evil. It's probably nothing, but the thing about opening doors and difficult paths is interesting.

'Fun and Games' is my favourite episode of season two, it has so much to give.

It's a wonderful balm after the roller coaster of emotions that are the first three episodes. 

The crew coming to terms with their trauma, Izzy healing with their help. Buttons transformation and Ed seeing it and realising people can change, which gives him hope he didn't have before.

But my very favourite part is heartbroken, furious, bitchy Ed barely containing his anger and annoyance at Stede. And then of course him folding like a garden chair with Stedes soft eyes and 'breathing the same air' speech. All his anger dissipates as there's no way he could resist Stedes unconditional love for him.

This has got to be the closest to a young Ed Teach of any photo I've ever seen of Taika, and I personally think it's just wow.

I've seen a few takes on here recently about how Stede's character was mishandled in the latter part of s2 - particularly during this scene of e7.

But isn't that missing the whole point of this episode? Stede does lose sight of himself here. He finally feels admired after a lifetime of feeling like the butt of every joke - and yes, he gets completely caught up in that.

It's worth pointing out that his behaviour in this episode is normal pirate shit in the world of OFMD - yes, even setting that dude on fire (and let's not forget, said dude did threaten to kill Stede first). I mean, no-one around him is shocked- they all have a good ol' chuckle at Stede's antics!

But seeing Stede behaving in this way is supposed to feel uncomfortable. This is the culture of piracy that he has been trying to change, but which he is now allowing to change him.

In no way is the message of this episode that Stede has peaked here - that he is the fully actualized version of himself. By the end of the episode he has crashed and burned and lost everything.

Rather, I think we see here (and during the run-in with Ned in e6) that Stede cannot exist in the pirate world while remaining true to himself. Which makes his decision to retire (temporarily?) even more poignant - he and Ed are both saving themselves as much as they are saving each other

You think we saw drag for the first time in season 2?

No.

Stede was doing pirate drag the whole time as The Gentleman Pirate! For him it was all about the aesthetics of pirating, the costumes, the ships, the dramatic raids and the even more dramatic Masculinity - you know: Swords! Beards! Swearing! Violence! How exciting!

But really devastating was Ed in 'Wherever you go, there you are'. He returned to being Blackbeard as his drag persona: The Kraken. He made toxic masculinity his drag art. He even painted himself a beard for f*cks sake! Like a real king 👑

== Love Notes ==

Hey Lovelies! I hope you're hanging in there. We're getting to the end of the week, and it's a long weekend for a lot of folks in the U.S.! Hopefully you've got some downtime planned (no matter where you are), you deserve a break.

Tonight I wanted to send a reminder to try and give yourself some self care this weekend. I've been very bad about it this week and my body is finally telling me so, so here's some gentle reminders for you!

Remember to take your meds today!

Drink plenty of water! Yes I know tea is delicious but it can dehydrate you, so remember to drink some water too when you get a chance :)

Take a shower or a bath, you'll feel way better afterward!

Eat something yummy, and something healthy too! Give your body something it wants, it'll tell you what it is.

Make sure you get plenty of sleep, if you have an extra day off-- take advantage of that! Sleep can do wonders for your mental and physical health.

Try to laugh if you can-- watch something funny, read something funny, look up a terrible dad joke on the internet-- ask a friend for a laugh. Laughter can do so much for us and helping to release some of our fight or flight stressors.

You're doing great lovelies. I know it's been a lot lately, but you're really doing great. You've been working so hard, and you're making incremental progress towards your goals. I'm really proud of you. Remember to be proud of yourself too <3 You are such an amazing person, and you deserve to rest too.
