Some of y'all are not beating the allegations that coastal city people are all elitists who hate the working class heart of America. Like, I live in a blue coastal city, but I grew up poor here and am, like, currently clinging to the bottom rung of lower middle class (maybe upper lower class? ooh, that sounds fancier) and I do not feel welcome in a lot of places that seem more progressive because they want to turn their noses up at people buying Walmart shorts instead of sustainable organic free range clothing from the Alps that costs an arm and a leg or cry about how "unsafe" homeless people minding their own business make them feel or be patronizing about fat people, painting them as poor, stupid unfortunate victims of The System and tut tuting and shaking their heads sadly. When they get on reddit to jeer at poor southerners suffering after natural diasters, it's exactly what it looks like. Shockingly enough, a lot of these people are not that well off financially, either. They're not upper middle class (always. sometimes though.)

Republicans are evidently not the only ones who suffer from "temporarily embarrassed millionaire" syndrome.

This is going to be so middle aged of me but THE GARAGE is like a magical dimension where all the things I'd like to have in my house but don't fit will go. Someday. When we clean it out. It will be my office but also where we have workout equipment (when we buy it) but also a gaming den and the 3d printer can go out there we also will have couches so we can have friends over and run tabletop games but dont forget the workbenches that take up a solid 1/3 of the garage because this is also where we'll do projects like refinishing furniture and lastly it will be a guest room in case my in laws visit or if my adult kid needs a place to stay. In the meantime its full of boxes of ???? stuff of some kind and craigslist free furniture so....

So I don't consider myself, like, someone who matured super quickly. I actually graduated a year late because I was doing my high school diploma at Community College for free (ty Bill and Melinda Gates) and wanted as many of those sweet, delicious free college credits as I could get. I didn't drive until I was 18 (we do have a good public transport system here which I usually used). I was pretty sheltered as a kid/teen so I had a lot of learning about real life to do as a youth. Like my first boyfriend taught me how to do laundry.

Anyway, in that context, I think it's fucking wild that at 25 I had two whole children and my own paid for car and rented a duplex with my partner and generally had a fantastic grip on day to day adult life and people are really out here like "Hmmm, idk, maybe 25 isn't quite an adult???? Maybe I'm still babey? Maybe 30 year olds who date 25 year olds are quite literally pedophiles???"

Maybe I need to get off the internet, but if you're in this picture and don't like it, you might need to reflect on what kind of privilege you hold to still be babey in your mid 20s and consider growing up instead of being weird about how other adults are living their lives.

Also consider: who is feeding you this idea and why? Who is benefiting from you infantilizing yourself and your peers? Who is benefiting from sowing distrust between you and people who have more life experience and wisdom?

Sorry about the rant I'm just SO sick of this "we have to be on all the time never look away if you aren't upset about politics and traumatizing yourself watching people die on Twitter you're wrong and complicit and evil" like I know things are fucked and we need to stay angry but we can do that while also taking a minute to crack open a cold one with the boys or have gay sex or get tipsy at the line dance, we HAVE to have joy to remember why the fuck we're refusing to give up in the first place. Fight like hell for your loved ones and then also go home with them to smoke weed and drink sweet tea and make biscuits covered in honey and butter please, please don't deprive yourself of joy, you're allowed to be happy BEFORE the work is done. You're allowed to be happy.
