What Is Voodoo?
It isn’t what we see in movies and TV shows, there’s different types and groups and variations, as there is with any religion.
Where did it begin?
The first instance of Voodoo happened in Ancient Egypt, by the slaves for the King and Pharaohs, these people were later called 'Yoruba’, they witnessed the religious practices and when they were released, they never forgot what they witnessed and when their group merged with Nok, they created the earliest version of Voodoo and spread it around by conquering different lands. Then Voodoo was in Haiti, by slaves that were taken to Haiti from The Kingdom of Dahomey (modern Togo, Benin, Nigeria area). The areas the slaves were taken from all had similar beliefs in their own religions, so when they were together in one place, the slaves meshed and melded all of their beliefs into one- Voodoo. Christianity was forced upon the slaves because the Plantation owners were scared, but some practiced in secret or played their rituals off as just dancing and nothing more. The lower class in Haiti still practices it even though most of the middle- and upper-class practices Christianity. (Source)
What is it?
As stated above, it started as a mixture of different religions, It has since turned into several different religions in several different regions outside of Haiti, such as New Orleans.
