guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.
and I think about it every day.

Lou Wilson saying in the first season of Adventuring Party that he’d never play a warlock because he doesn’t want to give up his soul and now his character in Neverafter is a little puppet boy who had to choose between his father and his own soul and he’s angry!! he faced down death at the hands of rot and insects and still he seemed most scared talking to his step mom in a dark hallway watching his fathers blood soak into the very wood he so lovingly crafted with his own hands and heart and it’s just another piece of Pinocchio that was taken from him and changed against his will and all he could say is “I don’t wanna I don’t wanna I don’t wanna” BECAUSE HE DIDN’T!! HE DIDN’T WANT ANY OF THIS, HE IS THE MOST VOCAL ABOUT SAYING FUCK THE STORY, FUCK THE MORAL, HE HAD TO MAKE A HARD CHOICE AND MAYBE IT’S WASN’T THE FAIRY TALE “RIGHT” CHOICE BUT IT WAS THE CHOICE HE COULD LIVE WITH, HE IS A CHILD AND THE STORY DOESN’T LET HIM BE A CHILD, JUST LIKE YLFA, JUST LIKE GERARD, JUST LIKE ROSAMUND, IT DOESN’T LET ANY OF THEM BE PEOPLE
