My dumb theory is that they've been in a coma since Princess Emily punched them in the first episode. Everything else on the show has been a weird fucked up coma induced nightmare, and the Spencer episode was them deciding whether to wake up from the coma or die. Like, they could choose to let Spencer kill them (they die) or adopt Spencer and leave the studio (they wake up from the coma). I mean, they ask every guest what the mean of life is, they've literally been searching for a reason to live.
