at  this  approval  she  smiles  like  a  student  being  praised  by  their  favorite  teacher,  a  fuzzy  sensation  growing  inside  her  stomach  as  eyes  observe  him  take  the  tea.  choi  was  one  of  the  few  that  seemed  to  believe  in  her  and  not  in  the  faith  that  pentecost  had,  which  seemed  to  touch  her  both  like  a  gift  and  curse  alike  —  mako  smiled,  sitting  down  on  a  chair  politely,  liking  the  fact  that  the  crew  had  already  gone  to  sleep.    she’s  a  poised  person,  or  so  believed  to  be,  and  thus  smiled  faintly  and  lied  prettily  when  saying:

“ i’m  fine. ”    she  wasn’t  —  too  anxious  to  be,  too  dutiful  to  try  to  escape  it.    still,  tendo  would  know  the  truth  anyway.  he  always  seemed  to,  somehow,  ever  since  they  started  to  talk  more  during  their  hard  hours  of  work.    “ and  you? ”

mako  rolled  her  eyes  upon  his  question.  “ gossip  is  stupid,    a  waste  of  time.  no  one  tells  me  any,  anyway. ”    ever  since  koyi  she  didn’t  try  to  approach  anyone.  it  was  better  that  way.  and  after  the  death  of  the  tokyo  team  —  no,  only  her  sensei,  and  tendo,  and  sometimes  herc  were  close.  the  scientists  were  still  a  mystery,  and  chucky…    well,  not  a  chance.    not  after  it  all.  speaking  of  which,  tendo  suddenly  makes  her  laugh.    the  cute  image  of  the  dog  appearing  in  her  head.    “ why  not?  i  would  do  it  if  not  for  herc.    his  owner  is  an  idiot. ”      facts,  and  she  shrugged,  legs  swinging.    mako  continues,  “ you  should  steal  the  dog,  give  to  me,  so  i  don’t  get  the  blame  and  herc  still  likes  me. ”

that was the underestimation of a life time. he was BEYOND tired. he was exhausted. how many days had it been since he had gotten a full night's sleep? tendo didn't know. he had lost count. weary dark eyes looked up at the other, a vague smile appearing on lips. " see - this is why you're my FAVORITE around here miss mako. " hand reached up, accepting the cup of tea. " thank you. "

a pleasant feeling began to spread from the stomach, warming his ACHING body. even his sight became a bit clearer. damn he really needed to get better taking breaks but it wasn't easy when the world may end at any moment. " how you're holding up, kiddo? " frown lines appeared on forehead as brows were raised while the technician took another sip of the dark tea. worry CLOUDED brown orbs as they observed the younger one, trying to find signs. answers. mako was still so young and yet she carried the whole world on her shoulders like atlas. she could be the key to their salvation but he doubted pentecost would let her enter a jaeger as a pilot. it was a SHAME for tendo believed in her. " any juicy gossip i've missed? " was there anything better than spilling tea while drinking tea with someone who's company you enjoyed? no, not really. " hope you haven't kidnapped that dog yet. "

AT THE MOMENT YOU WANT ...

... to restart ,

it  all  feels  the  same.  it  always  has.  the  same  few  things,  over  and  over.  no  variety,  no  progress.  you  feel  like  you've  messed  up  somewhere,  and  can't  figure  out  where.  you've  been  walking  down  this  road  for  so  long,  it  feels  like  years.  it  also  feels  like  a  few  hours,  maybe  only  a  day.  it  was  supposed  to  lead  somewhere,  someday.  it  was  supposed  to  be  promising,  but  all  you've  reached  is  a  dead  end.  you  wonder  if  you  took  a  wrong  turn  along  the  way.  you  sit  down,  wishing  to  restart,  and  maybe  not  take  this  path  at  all.  this  has  happened  yesterday,  it's  happened  today,  it's  happened  tomorrow.  it  feels  neverending.  instead,  maybe  retracing  your  steps  will  help.  this  isn't  the  end  for  you,  there's  still  many  roads  to  go  down,  it's  just  that  this  particular  one  wasn't  the  one  for  you.  you  want  to  restart  with  a  blank  slate,  but  would  that  really  be  the  best  idea?  who  would  you  be  without  the  mistakes,  and  progress  you've  made  so  far?

you look at this tiny tiny woman who is always foccused on something, serious and hardworking to the point of correcting you with a frown or simply not talking to you if you botter her too much, and who is just, better than you tm and don't think her playlist is silly lofis, shibuya pop and hatsune miku. and that she listens to it full volume on her earphones. and that she would dance it around her room while drawing cute pictures of cats, and writing poems and haikus.

things  around  here  were  different,  she’d  soon  discovered.  apparently,  to  watch  fights  was  not  something  an  unchaperoned  young  woman  ought  to  do      —-      but  hell  would  turn  cold  before  whispers  frightened  her  even  more  in  a  different  country  than  they  had  back  in  osaka,  pride  ever  soaring,  soft  eyes  ever  so  soft.        heart  soared  to  watch  the  movements  and  the  flesh  colliding,  the  sweat,  the  adrenaline  she’d  missed  without  a  quarterstaff  and  her  swords  —  not  allowed  to  practice  even  inside  their  house’s  tight  walls.        the  servants  might  speak,  her  sensei  had  said,  as  if  they  weren’t  already.          everywhere  she  looked  someone  was  staring  intently,  wondering  who  she  was,  asking  it  out  loud,  before  another  replied;    a  protegeé  of  general  pentecost.          he  used  to  be  a  marquis  before  joining  the  military.              𝚂𝚄𝙲𝙷  𝚁𝙴𝚂𝙿𝙴𝙲𝚃,    𝙻𝙾𝚂𝚃  𝙵𝙾𝚁  𝙰  𝙱𝙰𝚂𝚃𝙰𝚁𝙳  FROM  THE  OTHER  SIDE  OF  THE  WORLD.

i’m  not  a  war  child.    mako  thought  bitterly,    trying  to  look  straight  up  at  the  arena.    not  the  way  they  think  —  and  all  was  going  well,  silently,  until  someone  approached  her.      mako  fought  back  a  groan  and  stared  back,    eyes  wide,    mouth  parted  in  lack  of  recognition.    the  man  seems  kind.    that  was  the  first  thought.    the  second  was  that  he  spoke  too  much  and  too  fast,    something  that  would  bother  her  immediately  if  not  for  the  sing-like  nature  of  his  speech.        

“  yes,    mako  mori.    a  pleasure,    my  lord..  ”   the  answer  carried  thick  accent  and  nonchalant  tones.      polite  but  distant  like  iron.      mako  smiled,    thin,    before  nodding.    “  indeed,  i’m  alone,  and  you  might  join  me  if  you  want.    but  no  matter  if  you  don’t  do  it  to  court  me,  your  ton  will  speak  nonetheless,    won’t  they?  ”    her  inquiry  carried  amusement,  and  shoulders  shrugged.    what  an  interesting  hobby  for  one  to  have.    acquaintances.        “    that  sounds…   ”    dreadful.   “  ... useful.    then  you  may  know  who’s  fighting  here  this  afternoon?    ”    

despite   having   lived   &   been   around   london   most   of   his   life   ,   the   duke   finds   himself   still   crossing   paths   with   new   faces   from   time   to   time.   as   he   enters   the   boxing   arena   in   hopes   of   finding   friends   &   entertainment   ,   he   sees   the   young   miss   mori   in   attendance   as   well   ,   a   woman   who   has   attracted   much   attention   amongst   the   ton.   it   is   unknown   to   mason   if   she   is   attending   unchaperoned   ,   but   he   knew   better   than   to   not   take   this   opportunity   for   what   it   was   &   introduce   himself   properly   to   the   young   miss.   ❝   miss   mori   ,   i   take   it   ?   ❞   mason   says   softly   ,   allowing   himself   a   short   bow   in   introduction.   ❝   forgive   the   intrusion.   i   saw   you   from   across   the   way   &   thought   it   was   best   i   take   the   opportunity   to   introduce   myself.   i'm   mason   greene   .   .   .   er   ,   i   mean   the   duke   of   kingsbury.   ❞  he   clears   his   throat   ,   a   bit   embarrassed   by   the   slight   fumble   there.   he   still   isn't   used   to   presenting   himself   by   his   title   yet & it'll take time for him to adjust to his new responsibilities.   ❝   are   you   here   alone   ,   or   .   .   .   ?   ❞   he   does   want   to   assume   ,   but   it   is   looked   down   upon   for   a   lady   to   be   anywhere   without   company.   ❝   if   you'd   like   ,   i   could   join   you.   &   don't   worry   ,   i'm   not   doing   this   to   court   you   or   anything   ,   i   simply   like   to   get   to   know   people   around   here.   i   take   pride   in   getting   to   know   everyone   &   making   new   acquaintances.   ❞

finished reading the pacific rim novel and it is so beautiful; the way raleigh views mako. she is strong and determined but he also sees how lonely and bruised she is from all that happened to her.
