I've been thinking about Renoir lately...spoilers under cut

I don't know how well I'll be able to put the nuances of this down because I don't think he's a bad father, I think he's a complicated one, the way the entire Dessdendre family is complicated and hurts each other often unintentionally, or just fails to be there for each other. It's very human.

Renoir clearly cherishes his kids. He writes letters to them that show his affection for them, he seems to have mostly positive relationships with them to the extent none can actually agree on who was the favorite (there's another post I'm cooking about how sometimes children growing up in the same family can have wildly different experiences of said family/home and how that seems to be at least partially true for the Dessendres. Nowhere do we see that better than the fact that all 3 have their own interpretations of who's the favorite. it feels very real).

From his letters, from the Axons, we get the sense that Renoir observes his children, that he is able to see their inner lives and channel that into these pieces of art. Alicia's Axon is clearly about his wishes for her, his hopes for his youngest. It's harder to say if Verso and Clea's Axons also have an element of that or if they are simply him going "I see you".

But there are PROBLEMS here, sir! When did Clea start shouldering the family burdens? When did Verso start feeling like he needed a mask? Why is Alicia so afraid to reach for the stars? is it possible people in the family (ahem) were discouraging to her? There were things going on in the Dessendre household that shaped these aspects of their personalities. Did he see that? Did he know it was happening under his nose (that he might have had a hand in it himself)?

Like Renoir. It's great that you want your daughter to reach for the stars but have you ever questioned that maybe her self-confidence issues are coming in part from. your wife?

I don't doubt Renoir loved his kids but perhaps he wasn't showing up for them the ways they actually needed. He loved them but the 'love alone is not enough' type of father.

This part is pure speculation but the vibes fit in my opinion: How much time was he actually spending with them where he was present? Yeah Renoir will write a heartfelt journal entry and craft the Reacher but will he help Alicia with her homework? Was he around for that?

the Divinity learning curve has been a little steeper than expected but I’ve finally managed to get the source collars removed, which will hopefully open up some new skills. my party is pretty well-balanced at the moment (my character is a rogue, Lohse is our mage, Red Prince is our warrior tank) but I am at a bit of a loose end of what to do with Sebille. I originally had her as an assassin-type character but that hasn’t been working for me with the current party composition so any tips for how to build her would be much appreciated 🙏 also if anyone knows where to find healing spell books please let me know

Okay I just looked on youtube for like an hour and I couldn’t find it I’m sorry 😭 I remember it not having that many views, like only a couple of hundred (which might be why I’m finding it hard to find again)

From what I remember of the interview she mentioned the parallels to her own queer experience discovering she’s a lesbian, as well as being very aware of the trans coding in the storyline and the significance of that. She also brought up that Shads canonically punches transphobes and supported Nocturne through her transition

Number 8 - Interrupting with a kiss

“Did you mean what you said earlier?” Shadowheart asked. She was half-draped across Karlach’s lap, resting her head against one strong shoulder. Karlach leaned back against the frame of the bed (a real, solid wooden frame!) and tilted her head.

“When?”

“To your friend. In the city.” A blush began to creep over Shadowheart’s pale features as she averted her gaze slightly. Karlach couldn’t help but grin.

“Of course I did! Have you seen yourself? I’m the luckiest woman in the world, so long as I’m with you.”

“Don’t be silly.” Karlach’s gaze darted to the tips of Shadowheart’s (adorably adorable) ears, smiling even wider when she saw the familiar blush begin to grow there too. “I doubt there’s a single soul who’s laid eyes on you who hasn’t been attracted to you. And, well, I’m not with you just for your body, after all.” Shadowheart turned a little further to face her, reaching one hand up and resting it gently on Karlach’s cheek. “I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as wonderful as you.”

“Aw, c’mon, Shads,” Karlach grinned, a little more bashful than before. Her tail curled around Shadowheart’s back, pulling her closer and supporting her as she leaned up. “This was supposed to be me complimenting you, not the other way around.” Shadowheart leaned even closer, a soft smile playing on her lips as she brushed them against Karlach’s cheek.

“I don’t think I could stop complimenting you if I tried. You’re…” she trailed off, gaze meeting Karlach’s, full of more emotion than words could ever express.

“You’re wonderful,” she finished, voice quiet.

Karlach couldn’t help herself, scooping Shadowheart up into her arms (prompting a surprised yet delighted giggle, one she would never grow tired of hearing) and cuddling her close.

“You’re so cute!” she said, nearly reverently. The blush was back, nearly coating Shadowheart’s nose and cheeks all the way to her ears, and she dipped her head slightly.

“You’re one to talk!”

“Nuh-uh,” Karlach gave the tip of one of her ears a gentle flick, unable to stop herself from grinning. “It’s your turn to get compliments now. You’re just going to sit here in my arms and listen, understand?”

“What a chore,” Shadowheart sighed, undercut by the laughter at the edge of her voice. “I suppose if I have no choice I will simply have to let you.”

“You say that, but you’ve not been great at it so far, little miss.” Shadowheart’s blush only seemed to grow at the nickname and Karlach couldn’t stop herself from pressing a kiss to her cheek. “Now behave yourself, alright? Let me tell you how brilliant you are.”

Shadowheart, still flushed pink, finally nodded. Karlach felt her heart physically ache, but not from the engine; a far deeper, more devoted ache that left her wanting to just pull Shadowheart in and kiss her. But right now she had a girlfriend to adore.

“You’re remarkable,” she said simply, honestly. “You’ve been through so much, but you’re stronger than everyone who’s tried to break you. No matter what they did to you, you stayed you. And you are the most beautiful person I know, Shadowheart, inside and out. I love you.”

Shadowheart’s eyes were shining, arms wrapping tightly around Karlach’s shoulders so they could press their foreheads together. She exhaled shakily, eyes closing.

“Careful. A girl could get used to this sort of treatment.”

“And I’ll tell you every day until you believe it.”

Shadowheart opened her eyes. One of her hands slipped back to cup Karlach’s face again and she gently ran her thumb against her cheek.

“Tell me I’m yours, Karlach.”

“You’re mi-” Karlach hadn’t even finished the word before Shadowheart closed the gap between them. The kiss was almost chaste in its softness, tender like a slowly-healing heart, and as Karlach pulled her even closer she let herself believe, just for a moment, that it could fix her own.

i recently met someone who has the most comically rambunctious and sassy guide dog i've ever met, which is to say owlbear could totally be a beginner support animal

okay bear with me here… Shadowlach are together in this au and Karlach is getting the owlbear cub trained as a cardiac alert service animal to help monitor her heart (he’s just a baby still so he’s in the process of being trained but he’ll be qualified soon)

the cub also starts mimicking Scratch when he’s helping Shadowheart (because that’s his big brother and he likes copying him!!) and so they’re both there whenever she has a PTSD flashback and needs their support
