Alright kids some Sokka analysis!
We all know that ATLA is an amazing show, with brilliant character development, a respect for heavy topics, good plot design and overal enjoyable episodes.
But what is very interesting is the way that both Sokka and Suki are portrayed.
Sokka is a non-bender of the southern water tribe. His sister is a bending prodigy, his best friend is the Avatar, Toph is the best earthbender alive and Zuko is the son of the Fire Lord.
Yet we never ever feel like Sokka doesn't add anything.
In the episode where he learns swordplay, the other characters are bored to death without him He is the tactician, the planner, the jester, the leader of the group in a way, the heart.
And yet he is still a child. He's allowed to be funny, silly, and stupid even while displaying qualities that the others don't have.
And the best example I can think of is when the final fight against Ozai happens.
Sure, Katara and Zuko take down the best firebender of their generation, Aang takes down the Phoenix King ( the most powerful firebender on the planet ) and Toph metalbends whole ships into oblivion.
But it is Sokka's plan that prevents a genocide, prevents devastation. It is Sokka that takes down all the enemy ships, Sokka that plans the attack.
Moreover, he takes down two firebenders amped up by the comet with one hand, lying on his back, while holding Toph up with the other.
The scene shows us brilliantly why Sokka is their leader: both Suki and Toph are utilized to the best of their abilities. And both are allowed to save the day.
He's also the planner of the eclipse attack and the prison escape, although these have varying degrees of success. Once he starts coming into his own as a full member of the team, when he starts to have faith in his own capabilities, there is no one quite like him.
And Suki, a nonbender like him, is treated in the same way. Strong, quickwitted, capable. Saves Toph from drowing in the Serpent Pass, member of the Kyoshi warriors. Able to go toe to toe with Ty Lee, who's been shown to immobilize powerful benders like Azula.
In the final fight, they are seperated, but never once is Suki treated as a damsel in distress. Indeed, she is the one saving Sokka and Toph by commandeering a war balloon.
All in all we love Sokka and Suki in this house

“the words to keep you” chapter 3!
Chapter: 3/12
Rating: M (for mild sexual content in just a couple chapters; this chapter is one of those chapters)
Genre: Romance
Relationship: Sukka, plus some minor Kataang and Maiko
Summary: It’s been five years since Sokka and Suki’s fraught breakup. They haven’t seen each other since then, but when Aang and Katara get married, the wedding provides the perfect venue for a long-awaited reunion. It doesn’t take long for old feelings to rekindle, except reconciling isn’t quite as simple as it may at first seem, and now Sokka and Suki have to figure out if it’s even possible to find their way back to each other.
—
Not a bad turnout for a party he’d completely whipped up out of nowhere, if Sokka did say so himself.
Inspired by the same restless drive that sometimes kept him awake drafting schematics until the oil in his lamps burned out, Sokka had buzzed through the reception, asking just about anyone whose name he remembered to come to his afterparty. He’d sweet-talked the Air Acolytes into letting him take the leftover food on sticks to the guest house afterward, and then sweet-talked them into coming to hang out. He’d asked his family if they wanted to join, but like Piandao, they’d refused, citing old age and tired bones — and then Sokka had gotten his ear twisted when he joked that Gran Gran didn’t look a day over eighty. His ear still throbbed a little. Sokka didn’t think there was a single tired bone anywhere in Gran Gran’s body.
“Should we expect you back at the ship tonight?” Hakoda had asked, and Sokka had opened his mouth to say, “Yes,” but what came out instead was, “Don’t wait up for me,” which, upon reflection, had felt like a dangerous thing to say. But Hakoda had just smiled and said, “Alright son, have fun,” as if he wasn’t thinking of all the potential ways Sokka could burn the midnight oil tonight that had nothing to do with schematics.
But Sokka was thinking about it.
He hadn’t stopped thinking about it since he’d first laid eyes on the nape of Suki’s neck at the reception.

Rewatched Sokka’s Master today and while I’ve always known that episode was impeccable, what stood out to me this time was the subplot about Aang, Katara, and Toph missing Sokka, which I find absolutely wonderful because it has nothing to do with how “useful” he is in terms of his skill set. It’s not that they go on a mission and realize they’re lost without Sokka’s tactical abilities. It’s not that they’re in a situation where none of them can bend and they need Sokka to teach them how to fight in other ways. It’s genuinely just them being lost without Sokka because he’s funny. It’s not showing that Sokka’s indispensable as a warrior, but that he’s indispensable as the friend they can count on to lighten the mood, and that that’s just as important

“the words to keep you” chapter 2 is up!
Chapter: 2/12

She knew it was him. Suki knew it as she was turning, once her brain had caught up with her body enough to truly hear the way her name had ridden that voice. But she’d turned too fast to brace herself, and then her vision was full of Sokka — Sokka’s eyes, Sokka’s bare shoulders, Sokka’s impossibly handsome formal tunic made of leather that looked soft enough to wrap polar dog puppies in.
“Shoot,” she hissed, because she was caught off guard, and she was never caught off guard. She was a guard.
He smiled a little uncertainly, and she took a deep breath. There was a sharpness to him now: the angle of his jaw, the cut of his tricep wrapping around his upper arm. But that wobbly smile was so familiar that it softened all the edges, including her own.
“Sokka. It’s so good to see you. You look—” Amazing. Gorgeous. Irresistible. Dammit. “—great.”

We are (not) Alone [Chapter 2]
⚔❤ “We are (not) Alone” ❤⚔ | sukka; minor kataang | Mature | chapter 2/? | Established Relationship | Emotional Hurt/Comfort | POV Alternating | Happy Ending
ENG: https://archiveofourown.org/works/39327126/chapters/101366847#workskin
ITA: https://www.efpfanfic.net/viewstory.php?sid=4028404
Summary:
“Sokka had always thought it was worth it and he knew she felt the same way too. He would have always preferred a week, a day, even an hour with Suki rather than nothing.
[…]
He would do anything to see his father’s proud expression, again, and he had always thought that his destiny would be that since he was a child; yet, now it didn’t seem the only possible path to take anymore. A part of him kept telling him that if he stayed in the Southern Water Tribe, he would give up many opportunities. On the occasion of learning new things, on seeing where the studies of other Nations were leading, on traveling freely and designing new inventions with engineers from all over the world.
[…]
"What if—” he tried to answer, then stopped. “I guess I’m not ready to give up on anything. Maybe I’m not the man that dad thinks I am.“ Katara frowned. "Who says we have to give up on something?” He turned to look at her widening his eyes, as if he had heard something nonsense. “It’s certain. This is how the world works.“ "We have already given up on so much.” She whispered looking down, as if she were talking to herself and; spirits, she was right.“
Due to a bug it wasn’t possible for me to add the curiosities regarding this second chapter at the end of the notes, so I’m forced to post them here and when I’ll publish the third chapter I will put the link of this Tumblr post in the opening notes.
⚠ Read the curiosities only after reading the second chapter ⚠
