Hot take ?
Bob’s characterization makes way more sense when viewed through a psychological lens rather than treating Sentry/Void as totally separate identities. Personally, I’ve always seen Bob as someone dealing with symptoms that align more with bipolar disorder or even BPD, which is often linked to early childhood trauma (something I relate to myself).
The extreme highs of Sentry and the crushing lows of Void feel more like emotional states or coping mechanisms rather than distinct personalities like with DID, which is what Moon Knight experiences.
I think portraying Bob as ‘different people’ kind of misses the point—it oversimplifies what he’s actually going through. He’s not switching between identities; he’s cycling through emotional extremes, and sometimes those states come with memory gaps or shifts in perception that make it easy to misread as something else. But at the end of the day, he’s still Bob 🫠
(I saw someone post a similar blog but I just wanted to share my thoughts on this)
#this exactly#he literally talks about it too even without the context of Sentry/Void#‘high highs’ and ‘low lows’#I can’t remember the exact quote#and especially during the Sentry confrontation he specifically acknowledges being called Bob and Robert by both the team and Valentina#he gets irritated when Walker calls him ‘Bobby’ but we know now that’s because of past trauma#they set Sentry up very specifically as Bob in a manic state#Void I can understand why people would mistake as a separate entity seeing as it was depicted as physically separate#but that was less of an entity itself and more of a metaphor for how depressive states can affect you and the thoughts that accompany them#as well as showing how Bob’s way of dealing with that (which he thought was the right way) was harming himself#Void is still Bob. it’s not a separate personality or entity or anything like that#it’s just the personification of his mental state at that time#I really love the route they took with it and I hope they keep developing his characterization in a respectful and accurate manner#I don’t want to see them take the cheap way out and throw away all the groundwork that Thunderbolts laid for his character#because it would be SO easy for them to just do a cop out ‘oh he’s fine now don’t worry’ to have the excuse of using his power in Doomsday#thunderbolts*#bob reynolds#sentry#the void#marvel mcu
