LUKE REMOVES AEMOND’S EYE Artwork by Ertaç Altinöz
Joffrey had run to get his brothers when Aemond took to the sky, and both Jace and Luke had come to his call. The Velaryon princelings were younger than Aemond—Jace was six, Luke five, Joff only three—but there were three of them, and they had armed themselves with wooden swords from the training yard. Now they fell on him with a fury. Aemond fought back, breaking Luke’s nose with a punch, then wrenching the sword from Joff’s hands and cracking it across the back of Jace’s head, driving him to his knees. As the younger boys scrambled back away from him, bloody and bruised, the prince began to mock them, laughing and calling them “the Strongs.” Jace at least was old enough to grasp the insult. He flew at Aemond once again, but the older boy began pummeling him savagely…until Luke, coming to the rescue of his brother, drew his dagger and slashed Aemond across the face, taking out his right eye. By the time the stableboys finally arrived to pull apart the combatants, the prince was writhing on the ground, howling in pain, and Vhagar was roaring as well.

which baratheon sister do you think he chose to be his wife ?
send me questions you have about my character! | accepting.
cassandra. hands down. there is no world in which aemond would forego selecting a betrothal candidate from a great house who is also conveniently the heiress. it makes little sense as possible for him to choose any of the other four storms beyond the eldest. both alicent and otto would think him an idiot, if that were the case!
now, no one had any certainty of knowing that elenda baratheon would give birth to a son, given the number of daughters lord borros had been "saddled" with. it left cassandra in a similar position to rhaenyra. however, whereas viserys might've been content to install his eldest daughter as heir apparent despite the presence of sons, borros remained insistent in his goal to sire a son for the position, meaning cassandra was only heir presumptive.
the notion that aemond could've been the lord of storm's end, even as a consort, was too enticing an opportunity to pass. his potential son would've inherited the stormlands and folded house baratheon back into the targaryen dynasty as it should've been. in that respect, aemond would've coveted cassandra for the prestige, at least initially. he might've come to like her in time after the war — provided the greens won. true, he kingship escaped him with aegon on the iron throne and the presence of jaehaerys and maelor, but he'd be a fool to deny the honor and privilege bestowed unto him with a high ranking betrothal.

what are his thoughts on his mother ? does he believe her creation of the green faction that was wholly necessary or something that was born out of personal ambition ? and what does he feel about the answer to that question?
send me questions you have about my character! | accepting.
it may not be obvious to an outsider, given his temperament, but aemond loves alicent. to question this absurd. it would be ludicrous to forsake the person to birthed him and his siblings, championed the rights of his eldest brother in the face of the king's disapproval, and who spoke out against the injustice done unto him which remained dismissed and unpunished for years. he may not always excel in articulating his love for alicent (destructive as it can be), but it is there from beginning to end.
aemond doesn't see anything wrong with her choice in forging the green faction. to him, it was done out of ambition but also necessity. for years there hadn't been enough attention given to their future prospects which would warrant fosterage, earnest allegiances that would develop familiarity to the crowns' vassals, or discussions among the small council of how to compensate them for the lack of titles or holdings. viserys had neglected the upbringing of his younger children so thoroughly that it only made sense for alicent to pick up the slack and try to forge them into efficient princes and a princess of the realm. what nobleman or noblewoman wouldn't?
even with his mother and grandsire's scheming that eventually led to usurpation, aemond doesn't fault her for it. casting doubt and blame onto a woman who did her duties as wife and maintained a stiff upper lip as queen in the face of a skeptical court would be nothing short of ungrateful on his part. her actions are what he believes done out of genuine support for her children, in direct contrast to a king who has woefully wasted his position to benefit all members of his family.

how does he feel about ser criston cole ?
send me questions you have about my character! | accepting.
ser criston is, without a touch of irony, the closest thing that aemond has to a paternal figure. his proximity to alicent as her sworn sword is what gives him access to the royal children and allows them to bond with him far more than with viserys, due to his position as king and the necessity of his obligation to the realm — even without the apparent favoritism to his eldest child. aemond has a fondness for criston due to how respectfully he treats alicent and how his mother seems to value his presence on an emotional level that aemond has picked up on throughout the years. it certainly helps that even after his disabling, criston did not treat aemond as an invalid and took it upon himself to train the prince into a competent swordsman, a gesture that only served to win aemond's respect of him as a person beyond that of just a loyal kingsguard. any error in judgment made on the part of the prince — be it honest or one of belligerence (as evidenced during the dance) will always trouble aemond should it pertain to criston, as he dislikes failure and wasting the amount of time/energy that was afforded to him by the knight. his feelings range from trust to outright care, the latter of which not easily admitted but persists regardless. it's a testament to how one's presence can affect a child — for better or worse, and the way aemond sees it, he would rather criston remain that very presence in his life.

what would his perfect life look like ?
send me questions you have about my character! | accepting.
the idea of a perfect life for aemond would be one without rhaenyra and her children.
however, given the impossibility of her nonexistence, he would settle for her removal as heir apparent in favor of aegon per andal law. viserys would've shown more appreciation of alicent's steadfast commitment to birthing his children instead of allowing his favoritism to seep into the treatment of his younger children and breed resentment. aegon being made heir at birth would've instilled the responsibility necessary for his future kingship. he and daeron would've been fostered at one of the other great houses to forge solid alliances. he would've successfully claimed vhagar without having to lose an eye to some thoughtless child.
rhaenyra's adultery would be exposed as treason, harwin gelded and sent to the wall much like his ancestor lucamore, lyonel executed, and rhaenyra's children acknowledged as bastards while removed from the line of succession, made to take the surname of waters, and stripped of their royal privileges to live among the smallfolk on dragonstone. rhaenyra would be made a septa or a silent sister, or betrothed to some minor lord furthest away from king's landing. he would be betrothed to a well-bred woman of his choice, preferably an heiress (maybe even one he can get along with) who will birth however many of his children that she is able. once otto has passed away, aemond would be named as hand of the king to his older brother. their family wouldn't be tarnished by adultery, bastardry, and an unnecessary succession crisis because viserys would have the sense to respect the tradition of his forebears, if not the precedent set by the previous king.

ARE YOU A SOLDIER, POET, OR KING?
Tumblr media
THE SOLDIER — ❝ There will come a soldier who carries a mighty sword. He will tear your city down. ❞
Righteousness. Strength. Violence. You see a door and break through it. You wonder, sometimes, if anger is the only thing you can feel. Remember : love is passion too. You made your own rules and will follow them to death. You try and forget that there is only one rule, and that it is "FIGHT". You are tired of fighting. You try to forget that, too, and keep going. You dream of quiet. Your love is where you heal. God knows you deserve to. (Really. You deserve to.)

PSA: DISREGARDING HOUSE OF THE DRAGON.
due to the unfortunate revelations which have originated from the production behind House of the Dragon, my portrayal will henceforth be adjusted to support book canon. what does this entail?
the source material Fire and Blood will serve as the groundwork for most of my portrayal of aemond targaryen. yes, there will be headcanons aplenty, but expansion of the character's perspective will stem from how he was written by author george r.r. martin. anything stated by ryan j. condal and sara hess will remain unacknowledged.
any and every development regarding the character which occurs on the loosely based television "adaptation" will not be applicable to my portrayal. this means no brothel backstory involving madame sylvi, no foolish attempt at fratricide/regicide in the middle of a civil war, no overruling his mother (the dowager queen, no less!) in favor of his own political ambitions, etc. for all his faults, aemond will abide by his family.
while i will continue to use ewan mitchell as the faceclaim for my portrayal of aemond, the subpar and inconsistent writing of the show in which he is featured does not lend to my interpretation of the character. as talented as i believe ewan to be, the direction given for his character within season 2 severely neglects the foundation that was laid in season 1, thereby creating a disconnect that doesn't hold up to scrutiny which ultimately undermines his efforts as an actor. i choose not to let his embodiment of aemond go to waste.
