Internal Battle

     “Unrequited Love: Feeling like you are being stabbed in the heart”

     “So, I have a girlfriend now.” He said, waiting patiently for your reaction. 

“Oh. That’s nice. How long have you guys been dating?”

Should’ve stopped at ‘That’s nice’. 

“For about two weeks. Sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, I didn’t want to introduce her to my best friend if she was a bad person.”

Best friend. That’s all I’ll ever be to you.

“You want to introduce her to me?” 

“Of course. You are my best friend. Do you want to meet her?”

Stop saying that. It hurts. 

“Are you okay?” he asked, noticing your frantic eye movements. 

Yeah, the person I’ve completely fallen head over heels for wants me to meet his girlfriend. I’m ecstatic. 

“I’m fine. Just a bit distracted. I have to go uh do something for school. Goodbye” you said while sprinting out of the door. 

“Oh okay, I’ll text you. Bye” 

You couldn’t be in there any longer. It was suffocating. 

     Maybe if you met her then your feelings for Hongwon would slowly disappear. 

Doubt it though. You love him too much. 

Your phone buzzed against your bedside table. It was a message from Hongwon. 

                        (Today, 6:23 PM)

Hongwon: She wants to meet at a cafe. Is that okay? When do you want to meet?

You: That’s fine. Which cafe? 

You: Never As soon as possible 

Hongwon: Cool. Seung’s cafe. Is tomorrow a good time?

You: That’s our spot  Yeah

Hongwon: 2:00?

You: I’ll show up late just to be petty 2:00.

You placed your phone back on your bedside table. You just agreed to meet his girlfriend. Your brain and your heart never agree. Especially when it comes to him. 

     You walked into the cafe a lot earlier than you planned. This was the place where you and Hongwon properly met. You went to school with him but never got a chance to talk to him. You guys had mutual friends so when they walked through the cafe doors they immediately saw you and ran to your table. One by one they left, leaving only you and Hongwon. His presence was nice. You were a naturally reserved person but you were comfortable around him. You two stayed in the cafe all the way until closing time. He walked you home and then you both realized you lived about five minutes apart from each other so you promised to hang out after school as much as possible. You guys have been best friends ever since. 

     The sound of laughter ripped you away from your thoughts. You could recognize that laugh from anywhere. It was soon followed by an unfamiliar laugh. It was light and feminine. You turned your head to face the two. She was pretty. They look like a nice couple.

“Hey Y/N, this is my girlfriend, Eunmi. Eunmi, this is my best friend Y/N.”

Its only been an hour but it feels like ten. They both collectively have said about 30 words to you. 

“Can we leave now?” she asked, pouting her lips, emphasizing that she wanted to leave asap. 

“I need to go to the bathroom. We can leave when I get back, if that’s okay with Y/N” he said while getting up. 

“Yeah, it’s fine.” 

“I’ll miss you” she said while grabbing onto his arm. Puke. He’s just going to the bathroom. You could tell that he was cringing but he hid it. You knew him more than anybody.

“Y/N right? I don’t remember. Anyways, I’m dating him so I am his number one priority now. He doesn’t need to worry about you anymore. You guys are allowed to hang out with each other but only if you planned in advance and if I’ve confirmed it. Don’t try to argue with me.” she said. 

She picked up Hongwon’s phone from the table and went into his contacts.

Why didn’t you take your phone? She probably enforced that rule.

“What are you doing?”

“Deleting your contact. I don’t want him texting or calling you. It's not like he has your number memorized. Give me your phone.”

“I’m not giving you my phone, he does, and we are just friends.”  

“I know you like him. Everyone knows. Everyone but him and it will stay that way.” she said, scribbling her phone number on to a napkin and handing it to you.

“If you want to talk to Hongwon call this number.”

Unbelievable.

Hongwon finally exited the bathroom and she immediately got up and put on a fake smile. “Let’s go Eunmi. Y/N are you staying here? I can walk you home.” You looked over at Eunmi. She looked like she was going to kill you. You weren’t scared of her. What is the worst a girl like her could do to you? He looked happy with her and you were scared to take that happiness away from him. 

“No, it's fine. Just walk her home. I’m just going to stay here for a little.”

“Alright. Call me when you get home. Bye Y/N.” 

He looked different today. He’s probably begging you to help him get away from her.  

“Oh, she’s gone”

You laughed. Haven’t laughed in a while. 

“Hello Mrs. Seung. How much did you hear?” 

“All of it. I haven’t seen you in so long. I was starting to think that you found a better place.” 

“Never, this is like my second home. I have nothing to do since Hongwon is always with his girlfriend. How have you been?”

This place has too many memories attached to it. It could never be replaced.

He replaced you though.

Ouch. 

“Better now that you are here. I always thought you and Hongwon would date. The way you interact with each other seemed like you guys were a match made in heaven.” 

“I hoped we would but he obviously doesn’t feel that way.”

“You never know, he probably doesn’t think you like him.” 

“That might be the case but I don’t want to risk it. It’s better to just remain friends.” You don’t really want that but its the safer option.

“Listen to your heart. It knows best.” 

“Thank you Mrs. Seung. For everything, I really needed this. I’ll be back soon.”

     Today was perfect. You met Hongwon’s girlfriend, your friendship was threatened, and to top it all off, It started raining when you were walking home. Call him. He’s probably with her. Fuck it. 

You grabbed your phone getting ready to call him but instead of seeing your lock screen you were being bombarded with texts and phone calls from Hongwon. Told you he memorized my number. 

“Hello.”

“I was expecting a phone call.”

“Sorry.”

“I was so worried. It started raining, I almost ran back to get you. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine. Are you with Eunmi?”

“Yeah, she’s staying over” 

“Does she know you’re talking to me?”

“No. Why do I need to tell her that I’m talking to you?.”

“It’s nothing. Goodnight.” 

Thanks for worrying about me. 

A/N: So, some people have asked for a part 2 but there won’t be one. I’m sorry that I ended it so vaguely. I originally wanted it to have two parts but I wasn’t satisfied with the way I wrote it. I am also shocked at how many notes this got. Thank you for 300+ notes! And again, I am so sorry.
