Pics from our table at Tulsa Zine Fest last weekend. Thanks to those who came out, bought/traded zines, and to Holy Mountain for putting it together. We felt in good outlandish company!

Frog vs Sleep is a 107 page (pagelet) comic made exclusively for the comique app. I had so much fun making the comic that I wanted to make a short animated promo. If you dig this promo, go check out the comic! Comique is a great app for viewing/distributing mobile comics, you can preview the first few pagelets of this comic in the free app for iOS.

Here’s all the remixed album cover sketchbooks I made, front & back. I’m gonna find a good local place to sell these (^3^♪
Sketchbooks (Remixed Album Cover Sketchbooks)
Sketchbooks are 6 x 9 in., 80 pages, cut & bound by hand. The front & back covers are recycled album covers, custom painted/lettered to make each one unique and saucy. Lays flat to scan, pages are easy to remove/add. Inside paper is high quality (100#text smooth white), good for pencil, pen & ink, markers, etc.

I DEMAND THE TRUTH
Ask and ye shall receive! The TRUTH is that your request is valid yet vague, so our response is equally vague. The Truth (thetruthpodcast.com) is also a podcast of fictional short stories, which we find fascinating and very listenable.

We do it so often and never learn to butt out...
Tumblr media
Vietnam, Afghanistan, and so many other places we barge in with our "higher moral authority" and then brag and wave the flag on the people's faces. We have hungry, sick, homeless people here we should be helping. We are a big country and whether we like it or not, size matters...

Author / H.P. Lovecraft
Tumblr media
If you're vaguely familiar with writer H.P. Lovecraft, you probably picture the aesthetics associated with his name: tentacle monsters, early 20th century New England, Edgar Allan Poe influence, or the Cthulhu Mythos that he created. All of these add to the flavor of his writings, but these elements are just the tip of the Lovecraft Iceberg.
Howard Phillips Lovecraft's work was a direct result of his troubled life. This brief biography of the author, written by S.T. Joshi, describes Lovecraft's early life, riddled with death, illness, solitude, and financial woes, which are themes that repeat throughout his short life.
His work dove deep into the horrors of the human psyche, where mysticism and science, two seemingly disparate concepts, overlap. In his stories, humans probe outwardly into the cosmic realm to find the source of all things unknown and unnatural, only to find the answer much less tasteful, that the horrors we fear originate within us. Knowledge itself is often the subtle yet pervasive antagonist, revealing secrets we only thought we wanted to uncover.
A man of his time, Lovecraft was not ignorant or immune to the zeitgeist of his day. Occasionally in his work, themes that are more sensitive today, like racism, float to the surface. Reading his work chronologically, you can get a sense of some of the troubles he was grappling with in his own life. Although his existence was mostly a reclusive one, he maintained a healthy correspondence with friends and fellow writers.
The genius of his work was mostly overlooked in his lifetime, but his stories are alive and just as potent today as they were a century ago. Visit the H.P. Lovecraft archive, where his entire body of work is collected, and in the public domain (sort of). For a more in-depth look at his individual stories, we strongly recommend the wonderful H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast. Listening to Chris Lackey & Chad Fifer dig into Lovecraft's work like kids in a candy store helped us get through so many rough days in the office, and inspired Edgardo to buy H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction, which I quickly borrowed and haven't given back to him since.

The Curbside Chronicle featured an article about mental illness by Ted Streuli and Egg had the pleasure of making cartoony illustrations for the piece. The theme for the drawings is "What if Mental Illness was treated (and criticized) as Physical Illness." Find more information about The Curbside Chronicle at http://thecurbsidechronicle.org/ and pick up an issue today!

This is the first pagelet of a vertical format comic I’m working on for comique, an app for comic makers and readers alike. The vertical format makes reading each comic on your phone intuitive and clear. It’s also a dang fun challenge to work this way. I’m used to squares and wide panels, so it’s forcing me to think up&down. I dig it. You should check it out, the app is free, the comics are fairly priced, and you can preview the first few pagelets of each comic before deciding to purchase. They’re called pagelets, I’m assuming, because they’re not quite pages, not quite panels, but somewhere in-between. The magic happens when you swipe from one pagelet to the next. After submitting this one, I think I’ll make this a series. The app seems like it would be perfect for a comic series. This comic is called “Frog vs Sleep”. My plan is for Frog & Pelican to be a series of worsening drama comedy crises and bad-problems that occur when one finds oneself through the horrifying situation of friendship. In this one, Frog discovers his need for an elusive entity called “Sleep”.
