her reaction to finally processing that she was about to lose dorothy forever is literally imprinted in my mind.
not surprised about the internet being racist about issa’s performance in black mirror, “she can’t act! it was so awkward!” her character is literally thrust into an alternate reality with no rehearsal or warning and expected to do a movie with AI actors from the fucking 40s on day one and just not be affected? like? hello
because i felt issa’s “wtf????” naturally transition throughout the episode and have to be jerked back in time essentially and have to act beside the woman she’s just had a Y E A R LONG relationship with who doesn’t remember her??? And she was just supposed to be chill??? y’all about to piss me off like learn how to watch something damn
and I’m sorry but the joy in her face and voice when she picked up that phone? A love story for the ages

oh
did the math and if brandy and dorothy were stuck in the simulation for at least an hour in the real world, they would have spent around two and a half years together. (and all of that went away in a blink of an eye…)

yeah!!!
Hotel Reverie starts as a satirical commentary on soulless remakes, and one of the "jokes" is that they recast the main white guy as a Black woman, in a period piece where a Black woman feels anachronistic. This could have become a conservative comment about "forced diversity" and the woke agenda. Or it could have been a progressive comment about Hollywood casting non-white actors in color blind roles while ignoring the racist undertones of the media they're adapting.
But the brilliance of the episode is that it ends up being neither. As soon as Clara/Dorothy becomes sentient, the central theme shifts around human connection and what links us to the poeple who preceeded us. It is heavily implied that the real Dorothy was a lesbian and deeply unhappy in a time period that did not allow her self expression. Her AI version finds this freedom in her relationship with Brandy.
In the end, the message of the episode feels more that poeple have always been poeple. Society changes, becomes more accepting of certain communities, but that doesn't mean those minorities did not exist in the past. And the movie being a success despite the anachronisms is a proof that it works both ways, and modern day people can still relate to old timey stories and project ourselves in them with our own modern mindset.

THANK YOU!!! i watched hotel reverie last night and the most frustrating part of doing my routine dive into all the fanwork has been fielding through all the “issa can’t act” comments. black mirror does notttt often miscast. brandy was out of her element from the second she stepped onto the redream set, in every way except for her love for dorothy. she’s supposed to be polarizing she’s supposed to be off-putting this entire thing is wrong! they are recreating an old classic and there’s a small aspect of the episode that’s commentary on remakes and the trend and if it ruins the sanctity of the original product and yadda yadda yadda but the POINT is that both brandy and dorothy felt out of place until each other. idk it’s just irritating.
I see ppl complaining about it on tiktok but i think issa rae's acting was a deliberate choice meant to highlight the difference between brandy and dorothy's time periods. Like dorothy was putting on a classic old hollywood performance both vocally and the way she held herself but brandy acted in the naturalistic casual way we see in films/shows nowadays. Its intended to feel out of place in a black and white film. It doesnt mean she was miscast

Brandy butchering Clair de Lune on the piano for Clara is the equivalent of a basketball player saying “babe, this one is for you” and completely missing their shot lmaoo

There's a wicked production somewhere where Elphaba kisses Glinda on the cheek sometime in act 2... And because I can't find it anymore I sketched it 🥹

time to unpack that backstory!
What was your muse's personality like as a kid? How has it changed since then?
Where did your muse grow up? What was their home like? Did they like where they grew up?
What did your muse's family look like? Parents, grandparents? Big or small? Who was around the house when your muse was a kid?
How was your muse's relationship with their childhood guardians? Has it changed over time, and if so, how? Do they keep in touch?
Does your muse have any siblings? What was their relationship like growing up? Is it any different now?
Did your muse have a best friend? Friends? Who did they hang out with as a kid? Are they still friends?
Did your muse have any enemies? Playground rivalries? How did that turn out?
What did your muse do in their free time? How did they entertain themself as a kid?
What was your muse's education like? Did they go to school? Did they like it?
What responsibilities did your muse have as a child? Chores? Babysitting? How good were they at fulfilling their responsibilities?
What expectations were placed on your muse as a child? Who had those expectations for your muse? How did your muse feel about them?
Did your muse go on any trips or vacations as a kid? Where did they go? How did they feel about traveling?
What did your muse want to be when they grew up? Did they have any childhood dreams, and have they achieved them?
Who was a mentor or a hero to your muse as a kid? Why did your muse look up to them and what did your muse learn from them? How is that relationship now?
What's one childhood memory that has stuck with your muse over the years? What's it significance to your muse now?
If your muse could say one thing to their childhood self, what would they say? Would your muse want to meet their childhood self in the first place?
How is your muse with kids now? Do they want kids of their own? What lessons from their childhood would they pass on to the next generation?
What's one thing that instantly transports your muse back to their childhood? Why?

When writing emotionally reserved characters:
Show your character's struggles with holding in emotions. Just because your character won't let themself go in public, doesn't mean they don't struggle holding everything in.
Find a motive. Pride and/or consideration for those around them can make emotionally reserved people hold back more than would be considered good for them. There are other reasons too, perhaps the initial cause and the reason now are different, but try to give them a reason.
Show side-effects. Everything you bottled up shows itself in another way, whether it's physical or mental. This can be long- and short-term, depending on the severity of the emotions.
Give them coping mechanisms. Everyone who wishes not to show certain emotions has a trick or two to keep themselves in check. Taking a sip of water, not looking people in the eyes, clenching their fists, breathing just a bit too deeply.
Write subconscious signs that they give off, which close friends or family might pick on. Just because these characters want to keep their emotions to themselves, doesn't mean they don't give off signs. Some manage to keep said signs well hidden from those closest to them, but it's more common for environment to pick up on something at the very least.

The Marvels trio consists of an amnesiac woman with PTSD, an overworked astronaut with major emotional trauma and a sixteen-year-old forced to confront the horrors of war when she should be fighting low-level crime at most. How the FUCK are they the most emotionally healthy and responsible team in the MCU.
