When i first came to tumblr i was someone who frequently used those memes. The lefter I got (was already left but like, baby lefty) the more using those (which i probably still use in some form) felt weird to write

like "im calling the cops" as an exaggerative reaction to something i deemed abnormal, like pineapple on pizza or wtvr.

Now its like i cant have fun with it, because even though i feel i always hated cops even as a kid, and know the dangers and all that, the phrase never had weight to me

it was the equivalent to 'sit in a corner' but more extreme bc extreme reaction to not extreme thing is funny to me.

But in my mind i never thought of the words, if anything it was fictional cops. An image of animated cops hauling someone away in a little Acme cage for wearing 2 pairs of socks to bed.

And it was always in jest, never to be taken seriously. Im fine with people doing whatever with their pizza and socks

but now its hard to seperate the words from reality, and sometimes i feel like im being too critical. Like too strict with my words, but idk. it just feels weird now

and maybe its bc ive experienced more, learned more, grown more.

A lot of phrases ive dropped like Big Dick Energy and Smooth Brain because i learned more

and with the christian ones, when i first read 'my brother in christ' it was always a fictional cartoonish visual. It was another extreme reaction. Like "my brother in christ, why do you scream when your kibble bowl is still full?" makes me think i have robes and a halo bathed in light, in front of a cat.

But now christ isnt just a word in the phrase, it makes me think of christianity.

So i like my brother in Talos, or some other word.

And this is all for me using it. Other people in posts im pretty sure i always see it how its intended. or what i think its inteaded, which is no relation to christianity or police brutality

when I first got on tumblr I remember being surprised at how many memes (visual and just repeated phrases) were very christian (e.g. "you need jesus"/"you need church" in response to anything vaguely sexual) and very carceral (e.g. memes of people on the phone calling cops or like the "go directly to jail" monopoly image or whatever).

and because I was kind of naively trusting in some ways (this was the first website that at the time seemed capable of maintaining pockets that were not immediately hostile to any conversation between women or between lgbtq+ people; this was the first website I had been on where people were openly discussing communism and anarchism and not immediately being derailed in the way I was accustomed to on places like reddit) I had assumed it was ironic.

especially because a lot of the people using these memes were queer, were of color, were sympathetic to revolutionary actions in other contexts. I was never a fan of "ironic" reactionary jokes (got turned off that real hard real fast with my early experiences with "rape jokes" rapidly becoming actually getting sexual assaulted in my teens) but I sort of tolerated it as a cultural norm of the site which on its surface seemed further to the left than other places I'd found

but I must say, in the decade I've been here, it has become more and more clear to me how much of that meme culture (much like the meme culture of rape jokes on another site I encountered in my youth) was rooted in people's actual value system, no matter how earnestly anyone insisted it was purely satirical

there are a lot of people on here from the states (even many who are multiply marginalized in ways that place them the direct target of both evangelical christian dominance and the carceral system) who hold deeply reactionary views about both those things. there seems to be some yet unrooted belief that these systems are not wrong in and of themselves, but that the violence of them is just not correctly identifying who should be the target. they don't want to stop structures that target people (and/or entire populations) for social--or literal--death, they want them to have better aim
