His confusion only served to confuse her, lashes fluttering a little with each stumble of his speech as she tried to find her way through the miscommunication. Shaking it all off with a nod that he start the entire interaction anew, Evolet had to admit that did seem to be the best course of action.
“Director of Human…-Oh! Oh.. well, my goodness-!” Setting down her glass and getting up to her feet, small hands made sure her skirt was smooth before holding out a hand in greeting. “I apologize for the confusion and utter lack of manners. Evolet Lancaster, the pleasure is entirely mine. It’s good to meet our representation in this place.” Apologetic smile upon her face, she cleared her throat once her hand was once more her own. “I hope you’re enjoying what I assume is a well deserved night of merriment?”
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
Granted, he wasn’t asking for her to treat him as if he were some person of importance by giving her the title - it just seemed to be the easiest way to clarify why he’d come over to speak to her in the first place. He had given in to the idea of the vampires getting their ‘fresh blood’ during the event as long as the human donor chose to do so and was compensated - and he wanted to be sure that latter point was upheld. The whole concept didn’t particularly sit well with him, but that didn’t mean it would be a problem for others.
“It’s not a problem,” Jesse waved off her apologies, “I could’ve probably come up with a better means of introducing myself from the start.” Still he took her hand to shake. “Evolet. It’s good to meet you. You’re pretty new to the island, correct?”
Tumblr media
“Well, I’m not much of a man for the camera and attention, but things seem to be going pretty smoothly, all things considered. And how about yourself? I hope you plan to enjoy yourself, too.”

anna-windsor:
She needed to shake this fear off, but the real question was how? She wanted to face her fear head on because she hated not smiling as much as she used to, go out with friends to a bar, have fun, enjoy a party like this, she was determinate to try to at least dance once before leaving, and knowing who he was, she felt a little safer.
She offered him a smile and took his hand, she hated how cold her skin was from the fear and now holding his hand he would be able to notice as well, but she doubted he would point it out.
— 🐕 —
As soon as her hand was in his he led the way out onto the dance floor, letting his other hand find her waist once they’d found a place. “Are you much of a dancer?” Jesse inquired, though he realized rather quickly that he maybe shouldn’t expect an answer - at least not one to come easily. Instead, he continued on to fill the potential silence. “I can’t say whether or not I was ever good at it,” and if he ever had been, he doubted he retained much of that finesse after the war. “But it’s got it’s merits, I think. Comforting, maybe?”

evolxt:
His question at first caught her off guard with his directness, face paling a little bit as she glanced down at the red ribbon about her wrist, nodding her head as she looked back up. “I am. To be honest, though, it has yet to happen and I am rather apprehensive about it. Are you… are you a Vampire, Sir? I’d be more than happy to provide.” Happy was maybe pushing it, but she’d always aimed to place.
Getting up from her seat as she’d spoken, small hands shifted to smooth any wrinkles from her skirt. “I apologize for any nerves, they aren’t meant in insult.”
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
Everything that came out of her mouth was just a little bit of a surprise. All of it except for her apprehension at the whole idea of ‘donating’ to the vampires, anyway. Still, it took a moment longer for him to orient himself. “I - uh - no, no. I’m not - not a vampire,” he waved off the statement, shaking his head at the whole idea. Sir. She was addressing him as sir - it hadn’t been all that long since that term had been commonly used both to address himself and his superiors back when he was in the marines --
Tumblr media
“I’m - I’m sorry, let me start over,” he finally managed. “I’m Jesse Hart. Director of human affairs, or whatever fancy title it was they settled on. I just wanted to check in...if you’re thinking of donating, and all. There’s no pressure for you to do so, I hope you know that.”

“I’d argue leeches are much easier to get rid of,” she laughed and shook her head, “They don’t follow you screaming things once you do get them off either.” She grabbed his arm and turned them both toward the dance floor as she watched a particularly dedicated reporter walking toward them. Rynn couldn’t exactly hide him right now but she could make him unavailable for questions. A brief wave to the reporter to indicate she was sorry, even though she wasn’t, and they were spinning across the dance floor.
“I have no idea what I am doing so…umm…I’m sorry if I step on your feet,” she chanced a glance down but that made her feel dizzy. “Can you imagine having to do things like this your whole life? I would make a terrible princess.”
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
At this point Jesse couldn’t be sure whether he was actually hearing his name being called or if it was just his head playing tricks on him given how much of a fuss there’d been at their arrival. Either way though, he was actively trying to ignore it - he’s only human after all, he must not have heard them. Thankfully he didn’t have to sit in his rudeness too long before Rynn had grabbed onto his arm and dragged him out onto the dance floor.
Dancing wouldn’t exactly have been his favorite choice of hiding places, but blending in was better than standing out, he supposed. “Well, neither do I,” Jesse remarked, the lightest of smirks touching his lips. “In that case it might work to your advantage - or disadvantage - that I can only feel one of those feet.”
Tumblr media
“I’m not sure ball etiquette is that high on a princess’s agenda these days.” Granted Jesse had little insight on how any form of royalty worked - human, vampire, or otherwise, but - “Seems like maybe it’s just about making it look good.”

“I’ll do it next time,” Landon offered, already trying to think up answers. “Uh, it’s going very extremely awesomely here, Buzzfeed kid. Nobody bites, everyone keeps their hands to themselves, and we all take turns. Just like in Kindergarten.” He finished with an overly large grin, hoping to get a smile from Jesse.
The smile turned quickly to mock offense, and Landon immediately collected a handful. They went directly into his mouth, and around them, he said, “No way, dude.” His metabolism wasn’t what it had been as a child - very likely he could down a tray or two of sweets before feeling anything approaching sick.
Tumblr media
He didn’t push the offer, however, and simply tucked the bag back where it had come from. “Think they have something besides sugary stuff and drinks, though? Like, uh, mini hot dogs?”
— 🐕 —
Despite the shock of Landon’s arrival back into his life having settled, Jesse was still feeling uneasy about the whole situation. It seemed like Landon had just as quickly and easily fallen back into step as if so much time hadn’t passed. Just the same kid he used to be in so many ways.
Jesse certainly wasn’t.
“Oh yes, I’m sure the King will be pleased to have Paradisus compared to kindergarten.” Though maybe it was a better picture than could be made. His smile turned just a bit skeptical though when a handful of marshmallows went into the other man’s mouth. “Yeah, no - you’re right, just like kindergarten.”
Tumblr media
He surveyed the palace, feeling a bit out of place in all the finery of it. “I would have to expect they have regular food, too - though I guess this whole thing is being offered by vampires so perhaps they don’t understand nutrition. As for mini-hotdogs...Is there a more dressed up version? Are there such things as fancy finger foods?”

anna-windsor:
Anna was glad that he let out a chuckled after her words, it was hard to get the right tone when she was typing instead of talking, as much as she was freaking out, she wasn’t sad and no one was forcing her to be there. The place looked like it came straight from a movie scene, everything was beautiful, and she would certainly be enjoying herself way more if there wasn’t the small little detail of vampires all around her.
‘I have been a few years since the last time I felt safe.’ the truth was, it didn’t matter if she was there or home, she would be scared anyway, always with a feeling that something bad was going to happen at any second. trying to enjoy the night Anna typed. ‘Would you like to dance?” At least she did feel a little safer with him around.
— 🐕 —
It took some kind of strength for her to face her fears head on, to come to Paradisus despite the presence of the vampires, to try and offer her help where she could. She deserved to enjoy herself tonight. Besides, Jesse wanted to believe that the vampires here were good, that they had no intentions of harming the rest of them. That Anna was actually safe.
“I can understand that,” he conceded. “But I don’t think you have anything to worry about.” He’d make sure she was safe, that his words were truth, if he had to. At the question of a dance Jesse’s gaze shifted towards the dance floor. “Well,” he shrugged, holding out his hand for her to take. “I can’t make any promises on being any good, but I’d be happy to.”

Where: the Ball
Who: Rynn and @sergeantjhart
On the outside, Rynn showed the same disdain for every social engagement she felt she was forced to attend. Inside, she truly enjoyed getting ready for something like a masquerade. She couldn’t quite put her finger on why. Maybe it was that this was one of the first things she was able to do with her friends again. The three of them. The relationship felt strained but she just knew if she showed the same determination, and stubbornness, that she was known for it would all work out. Or she hoped. It was also somewhat of a relief that she was not the center of attention. Not even among the three of them. It was Jesse being pulled aside for pictures and interviews. Jesse’s name being called. Though she saw Landon get recognized a few times as well.
Jesse had been pulled for some pictures and Landon wandered toward the food tables, Rynn’s eyes following him still terrified he’d just disappear. She felt Jesse return to her side and looked up at him with a grin, “Always the popular one. Little more demanding than the cheerleaders in high school wanting your attention though.”
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
Jesse wasn’t sure if Landon and Rynn were intending to come to the ball from the beginning or if it had taken some rather undignified pleading to convince them, but either way he was grateful to have them both around if only to ease a little bit of the tension. Sure, he needed to be present, but they didn’t necessarily need to be. It was all going to be a little more bearable knowing they were nearby.
“Please,” Jesse said as he sidled up next to Rynn, glancing back in the direction he’d come. “Can you hide me somewhere for the rest of the night so I don’t have to deal with it anymore? They’re like leeches, the whole lot of ‘em. Once they’ve got you it’s almost impossible to shake them off.”
Tumblr media
Besides, the idea of getting to spend the night having a little fun with Rynn and Landon again? That sounded far more appealing than answering the same set of questions over and over again. “You should save yourself.”

Closed Starter for @sergeantjhart at the Masquerade Anniversary Event
Landon had hovered, waiting for Jesse to escape the reporter. The world was watching, impatient to know how humans were faring on Paradisus. As if they hadn’t been just as safe or in danger before. His pal handled it well, patient as he could be.
Tumblr media
“Man, no offense to your handsome face, but I kinda figured they’d wanna talk to… others more than humans, y’know? Like the royal family?” Landon shrugged. Go figure. From within his suit coat, he revealed a bag of mini marshmallows. As they walked, Landon offered the bag to Jesse. “In case there’s a line for food.”
— 🐕 —
It was ironic that Jesse seemed to put himself in such positions when he rarely wanted the spotlight to be upon him. But as the elected human Council director he wasn’t that surprised when eyes had suddenly all been on him. How were the humans doing in Paradisus? Were things really safe here? The questions seemed endless, but eventually he managed to break away and sneak through the crowd back to where Landon stood, obediently waiting.
Tumblr media
“I would be more than happy if they would,” Jesse admitted, “I don’t know that I have all that much interesting to really say. There are only so many ways to answer the same general question.” And besides, it wasn’t as if Jesse was the only one who could have an opinion on it; if they truly wanted to know how the humans were doing, they should be speaking to more than just him.
Jesse snorted as Landon revealed the sugary treats from inside his suit jacket, though his eyebrows knitted together skeptically. “You’re going to fill up on those things? You’re going to make yourself sick.”

anna-windsor:
Anna wanted to run away, going to this event had been a terrible idea, she tried to wear all black and a full mask, so she could hide a little better since she considered most people would be wearing strong colors, but apparently the full mask wasn’t her best idea, and she was calling more attention to herself than she would like.
When someone called her name, she gave a little jump, having no idea who was talking with her until he offered her his name and she relaxed a little and offered him a small smile that he would be unable to see because of her mask. She grabbed her phone, so she could talk with him. “How soon can I leave without being rude?” she asked.
— 🐕 —
Judging by the fact that she reached for her phone to type out a message was enough to show him that he’d been correct in his judgement of who she was behind the mask. He’d actually been surprised that she’d chosen to attend at all - attendance certainly wasn’t required, though everyone on the island as a whole had been making a big to do about it. Someone certainly wanted the rest of the world to see that the world was going to keep turning even after the big reveal of vampires being more than story book villains.
Her question earned a chuckle, shoulders lifting in the slightest of shrugs. “Well, I don’t think anyone would expect you to stay if you’re not enjoying yourself.” His answer was honest, though he wasn’t certain weather or not she would heed it. “But I’ve heard good things about the food and drink being offered, and the music is good. You’re safe here.”

Where: Paradisus Ball Who: closed @anna-windsor
The ‘hidden identities’ aspect of the ball had Jesse a little bit more on edge than usual. He didn’t like that he couldn’t quite place everyone in the room - though granted, there were plenty of unfamiliar faces in this city anyway. Then again, wasn’t Paradisus full of hidden identities anyway, if one really thought about it? Vampires, shifters, witches - they all hid behind the mask of humanity.
Anna, standing on the outskirts of the crowds with a full mask covering her face, she somehow managed to both blend in and stand out all at once. He knew her history, how she’d been attacked by a vampire that had left her voiceless but at least still alive. He could only imagine what being in a room full of them - and not having any idea who was who - might be feeling.
Tumblr media
“Anna?” He asked as he approached, just an attempt to verify her identity first, in case he happened to be wrong. “It’s Jesse,” he gave by way of greeting, in case it wasn’t so apparent behind the mask. “How are you holding up? I just wanted to...check in.”

Where: Paradisus Ball Who: closed @misslancastxr
Jesse had been apprehensive, to say the least, when the decision was made to come to Paradisus. But a year had passed since it had opened and, all things considered, it had gone rather smoothly. If anything it had been a proof of concept. Vampires, shifters, witches, and humans - they could all live together. But for how long? Could it last?
Donating blood regularly for the vampires was one thing, but the ‘opportunity’ to ‘donate’ fresh blood during the ball...that was different. It was volunteer based, no one had to participate. But it was still something Jesse wanted to check in on. After all, coercion was still a thing - and from what he knew, vampires were capable of that and more if they really wanted to be convincing.
Tumblr media
“Hey,” he greeted someone who seemed to be lingering near by. “Are you thinking about donating?”

mermaidxpriya:
Priya glanced over to the man when she heard him clearing his throat, eyeing him tentatively for a moment before looking back to the storefront that, yep, glitter was being thrown onto the ground in front of. She had to resist rolling her eyes at the ridiculousness of it and instead just hummed when the man spoke. Anniversary of the island. Huh…
“So it’s been…a year, I’m assuming?” One never knew with land-dwellers after all. She remembered one time she was on land, hearing some silly little schoolgirl lamenting that her one one anniversary had been forgotten. How constricting time was for the humans… “And has it been a good one? Prosperous?”
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
“A year, that’s correct.” Jesse gave a nod of confirmation as his eyes pulled away from her to watch the display that was being put up. It didn’t seem entirely necessary, but Jesse wasn’t about to tell anyone how to celebrate if they chose to. “It’s a little much, but sometimes people just need something to celebrate, I guess.” Why not celebrate what you can?
Tumblr media
“A good year?” Jesse clarified, considering her follow up. Prosperous? He wasn’t sure the goal of Paradisus was to be prosperous, necessarily. That was always an added benefit of a well off community, he supposed, a good sign in the over arching scheme - but it was besides the point, really. “I suppose it has been, though even better is the fact that everyone seems to get along well enough.”

mermaidxpriya:
It’d only been a couple days since Priya had ventured onto land, everything so…different since the last time she’d done this decades ago. She tried her best to act normal though, to not be so on edge (or so visibly disdainful) at the humans who so freely walked about. She wasn’t here for revenge on an entire species- she was here for the survival of her own. She was here to assimilate and see if this was a good choice for her people. But just when she thought she was getting the hang of things, something new started happening. Like now.
Priya watched as a couple of witches levitated garlands to decorate the awning of a store, tilting her head in confusion as she realized other places were all decorated as well: banners and garlands and…were those balloons? Glitter? “Sometimes less is more. What’s all this even for?”
@paradisusstart
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
It was a step up from the town being awash in red and pink hearts, if only just a bit. Still, it was a good landmark worth celebrating, he figured. Proof that maybe this desire for peace among the species was possible, even when the rest of the world might still be reeling from the information. While it might be a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things to the rest of them - the vampires and the shifters - it was still something. And any reason to celebrate was good in Jesse’s book.
At the woman’s voice he turned in her direction and just as quickly found his gaze lingering a little longer than normal. She wasn’t a familiar face, but there was something...
Tumblr media
He shook his head and cleared his throat, focusing his attention on the question that had been asked. “It’s uh, to celebrate the anniversary of the island first opening. I suppose it’s as worthy a milestone as any.”

Lillian followed after him looking around curiously before turning her attention back to him.
“I’m looking for the witches section of the council? Or housing, I’m not sure if there’s specific people or if you just go to your area for everything.” She confessed giving a small smile before nodding. “I’m Lillian. I’ve only been here just over a month.”
Tumblr media

“Witches, sure. You’ll be looking for Nia, then.” When she clarified that she was looking for housing information, though, Jesse glanced back in her direction. “Well, I’m sure any of us could help you with that. Did you have any specific questions? Otherwise, sure - I doubt Nia would have any issues helping you out with that, either, if you’d prefer to work with her.”
Tumblr media

harrison-morgan:
Of course the other would know who he was, and that thought wasn’t out of arrogance but out of knowing his sister. He supposed he was well known to the council, along with his story. He was ashamed of it– having been turned– though, and wished it would forever be something that stayed between him and his sister. But this was his life now and he had to accept it.
“Nice to meet you.” He nodded slightly. He’d definitely heard the name a few times but there wasn’t much he recalled of the other besides that. The suggestion to go inside to her office was shrugged off as soon as it was put out there. The fewer people Harrison was around the better. “I think I’ll be fine out here. That is, if small talk hasn’t started killing you yet.” He added the last bit as a lame attempt at a joke.
Tumblr media
— 🐕 —
Jesse couldn’t exactly blame the man for not wanting to go inside. For one thing, the place was a bit of a maze if you didn’t know where you were headed. But besides that point, he was still a rather new vampire if Jesse recalled the story correctly. Being in tight quarters with a human, let alone the other species who were likely milling around inside right now, probably wasn’t the best choice.
Though he had managed to survive with Camila at his side all this time, so maybe he had good control of his thirst.
Tumblr media
“Not a problem.” The only real problem that remained, then, was the fact that he’d run out of random topics to discuss with the practical stranger.
“Have you uh, settled in well and all that? Paradisus doing you good?”

papaflores:
Luciano nodded, he had made note of some of the aspects of cities he had traveled throughout the years, but there were so many things he couldn’t relate to that were very human experiences. As he aged, many things that had once filled him with wonder lacked the luster they once had and were far distant memories. There was quite enough contentment for rest and to spend time with his family, wondering if he had missed opportunities when his children were younger to be more of a family during the lapses where he would be gone.
Although, there was nothing he could do now besides be there for them when they need him, and there were other responsibilities he needed to attend to besides worries of his past faults.
Tumblr media
“You’d he surprised the things that are in the cities that humans hold so dear, you’d find it may be all quite similar even vampires, shifters, and witches included.”
— 🐕 —
There really wasn’t all that much to a city when one really thought about it. As long as it covered all the necessities, everything else was simply a bonus. Though the ‘necessities’ part was sure to vary between species. Humans needed access to food, water, so on. Shifters and witches the same, as far as Jesse was aware. Vampires were the ones who undoubtedly had other needs to be fulfilled in ways that didn’t threaten the safety of the rest of them. But that was why he and the other humans in town gave blood donations. It was a pretty brilliant system, as long as he didn’t dwell on it too much.
“I think primarily all of us just need food, drink, and entertainment, right?” Perhaps what one found entertaining varied, but that was to be said across the human race, let alone across species. Beyond all of that - it was probably just basic connections that really mattered. There wasn’t anything necessary to put in place for that, Jesse liked to think.
Tumblr media
“Are you headed anywhere in particular?” Jesse asked, gesturing in the direction Luciano seemed to be headed. “I’ve got nowhere to be at the moment, strange as it seems; so if you’d like the company I can come along, but don’t let me keep you.”
