Landed in Warsaw, August 1st, 78th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. It was not planned, just the way things happen. We reached the city amid a massive march, which I later found out was organized by nationalist groups. After a few days in Tallinn and Riga pondering the legacies of Soviet Communism, I witnessed the opposite side of the same coin in the streets of Warsaw.

Back in Cuba’s Cold War days, good workers were awarded with a prize trip to the Soviet Republics and other ideologically friendly countries. It was not only a reward for their hard work and for making the Party proud, but also a way to showcase Communism’s supposed superiorities. My late father was the recipient of such prize trips, visiting Poland and Czechoslovakia. My uncle and aunt were awarded a trip to the USSR, starting in Moscow, then going on to Leningrad, Kyiv, and Armenia. In 2022 I found myself walking around Tallinn and Riga. Did I experience an air of familiarity? Perhaps. Did I catch a glimpse of the USSR and Communism’s legacy? Maybe. What I can’t explain was the uneasiness I felt sometimes, like a dull droning in the background.
