First blog post up!

This is the first in our Ask a Handler series! In this blog series we’ll be answering questions you’ve always wanted to ask a service dog handler.

In today’s blogpost, we’re answering the question: “Is it okay to ask to pet a service dog?”

We’ll be going through why some handlers might not mind being asked, and why some might!

Lunch breaks mean no vests! I often let Scully out of her vest during lunch so she can shake it out and relax. We also love to hit the soccer fields at work for fetch!

Fell asleep on the train. Deacon woke me at our home stop. I pretended for impressed onlookers this was 100% something I trained him to do and not just his creepy intelligence and/or divine intervention.

Scully says hello!

This is the start of Scully’s and my blog where we can post all about our journey as service dog and handler. To start, here’s a little About Me, for both of us!

Scully:

• Scully is a red Moyen Poodle, born on 2/14/2017.

• She is a medical alert & response service dog who also performs psychiatric response and non-weight bearing mobility tasks. She knows over 25 tasks!

• Scully works with me in an office building with over 10,000 employees!

• Her favorite pastimes include long games of fetch, hiking, and swimming.

• Scully is fed a Prey Model raw diet from We Feed Raw!

• I’m a 23 year-old mixed-race bi girl from Texas!

• I have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Computer Application Systems and I work full-time as a software developer.

• My hobbies include hiking, traveling, taking Scully swimming and running, and finding ways to tweak recipes to fit my vegan lifestyle.

• I have both physical and mental illnesses which, after years and years of struggling, treatment, and struggling some more, led both me and my medical team to decide that a service dog would be the best fit for me!

• Scully is my second service dog! I trained both her and her predecessor, Sam, with the help of professionals, which I highly encourage for any owner-trainer.

• I’m always open to questions about either Scully or myself!
