Geralt has found his child surprise, the former Princess of Cintra. Very quickly he realises they're in danger from Nilfgaard. Knowing they won't stop until they have what they're after, Geralt takes Ciri and flees north. On their way, he searches for any signs of his old friends, fearing they too are in danger. In a cell in Novigrad, he finds Jaskier who seems all too happy to join them on the journey to Kaer Morhen.

As days on the road turn to weeks, Geralt can't help but realise that something is wrong with Jaskier. He avoids talking about the things they did together, he doesn't sing, he's tired all the time. The worst is when Geralt catches him with a horrible vacant look in his eyes, like his mind had fled somewhere far away and his body had just been left behind.

He flinched away as a hand carded through his hair, before gripping his head and forcing it forward, fire nearing his back. “Stop-stop I don’t know anything!” The end of the word bit off into another scream as flames licked at his back, scorching the skin there.
