Mrs. Brisby (The Secret of NIMH)

The Secret of NIMH is a 1982 American animated fantasy feature film based on the novel ‘Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH’ by Robert C. O’Brien.  The film was produced by Don Bluth Productions in association with Aurora Productions. It tells the harrowing tale of an intrepid widowed field mouse named Mrs. Brisby who embarks on a journey to save her children and home.  

Mrs. Brisby’s journey uncovers the strange secrets of the rats and mice who inhabit a rural farm.  Many of these were laboratory test subjects who were part of a series of experiments at the National Institute of Mental Health (or N.I.M.H. for short). The experiments gave the rodents human-like intelligence, enabling them to escape, as well as extending their lifespans.  Brisby additionally receives a special magical amulet that can unlock telekinetic powers.  

Agents from NIMH come to the farm intent on exterminating all of the rodents affected by their tests.  Fortunately, Brisby is able to tap into the powers of the amulet to safely relocate the mice and rats to a remote region in a forest where they were able to live in peace.  

Actress Elizabeth Hartman provided the voice for Mrs. Brisby. A direct-to-video sequel entitled ‘The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue’ was released in December of 1998.

Love and loyalty, to their clans, would not subside

The memories of their kit days, faded with time

Yet, in their final moments, love shone like a flame divine

Falling Feather's wail, a sound of despair

Jackdaw'Cry's final breath, a deadly snare

Their bodies, locked in final repose

A grim tableau, a fatal dose

Thunder's gaze, a witness to the end

Two lives, lost in a violent trend

In death, they're bound, a twisted fate

A moment's struggle, a lifetime's weight

Their story, told in blood and pain

A tragic end, a memory to remain

Of two siblings, torn apart by fate

Their bond, forever etched, an unbreakable weight.
