What Evangeline wanted and what she got

TBONA SPOILERS

There is absolutely no way anyone can read TBONA and still think tellajacks is better than evajacks like no way.

Tellajacks had passion but he always treated her like an object and never genuinely cared about her meanwhile with eva he's always so soft and loses his mind if anyone so much looks at her in the wrong way. His obsessive reckless treatment of tella is in such stark contrast to how gentle and careful he is around evangeline. Tbona erased any doubts that jacks didn't love eva and only had feelings for tella.

A Ballad of Never After predictions

SPOILERS included, you’ve been warned.

At the end of ABONA, Apollo comes out of the woodwork with the magic ability to erase memories. He erases all of Evangeline’s memories of Jacks, thus erasing any negative memories of Apollo as well. Who is Apollo and why did he do this?

In Chapter 16 we get this information:

“But a few things never seemed to change, such as the names of the Valor children and a few of their defining characteristics. Aurora was sweet and was always described as the most beautiful girl who’d ever lived, followed by her twin Castor, who was said to be quite noble. Vesper could see the future. Tempest and Romulus--another set of twins--were great inventors, responsible for the magical arches. Dane was some sort of shifter, and Lysander had a gift that involved memories. Every story said they were handsome and kind and generous. The family was close, protective of one another, and beloved until...

Something horrible happened.”

Perhaps Apollo = Lysander.

If he is, indeed, capable of manipulating memories, then it would be possible to erase the memories of anyone who knows he is Lysander.

Why did he do this? I’m not sure, but it’s worth noting that one meaning of the name Apollo is “destroyer.” Could Lysander have been instrumental in causing the “horrible” event that tore the Valor family apart?

“I’ve got you, he said. The way he spoke was so gentle, so very unlike Jacks, she was reminded it was just a dream again.

But was it so unlike Jacks? We learn in chapter 38 that Fates can enter and manipulate dreams. Was Jacks, in fact, inside this dream, using this brief moment to hold and comfort Evangeline? I say yes.

I am having a bit of whiplash with this scene. After the Fete, Aleksander had been behaving like he practices cape twirling in the mirror, while simultaneously channelling the petulance of Erik at the very end of PotO. But now, he has suddenly reverted back to the Aleksander of earlier chapters. I wish this was how he spoke throughout the book because this is moi soverennyi and now I am having to do some serious mental compartmentalization to make him work as a character with internal consistency and not a Frankenstein’s Monster of various ill fitting parts.

“I couldn’t take chances,” he said. “Not with the power of the stag. Not with Ravka’s future hanging in the balance.”

“Don’t pretend this is about Ravka’s welfare. You lied to me. You’ve been lying to me since the moment I met you.”

His long fingers tightened around the glass. “Did you deserve my trust?” he asked and for once his voice was less than steady and cold. “Baghra whispers a few accusations in your ear and off you go. Did you ever stop to think of what it would mean for me, for all of Ravka if you just disappeared?”

“You didn’t give me much choice.”

“Of course you had a choice and you chose to turn your back on your country, on everything that you are.”

“That isn’t fair.”

“Fairness?” he laughed. “Still she talks of fairness. What does fairness have to do with any of this? The people curse my name and pray for you, but you were the one who was ready to abandon them. I’m the one who will give them power over their enemies. I’m the one who will free them from the tyranny of the king.”

“And give them your tyranny in return?”

“Someone has to lead, Alina. Someone has to end this. Believe me I wish there were another way.”
