Mistakes in Roleplaying.

THAT CAN BE EASILY AVOIDED BY THE WAY: 

Now I have been writing since time and roleplaying for a number of years now so I think I can say that I know a thing or two about the common mistakes and I have seen and done through writing SPECIFICALLY ROLEPLAYING. And these aren’t the usual ones like not waiting for replies patiently or being butthurt when you’re not getting replied to, no, these are the simple frustrations that I personally have seen and I’m pretty sure I have stupidly done one of them in the past. So I hope this helped somehow. 

QUICK INNOCENT PUBERTY

Weird name but let me explain. Have you ever written with someone’s innocent character? They’re so cute and innocent and their voice sound like children but then one reply later, suddenly THEY HAVE A BURST OF CONFIDENCE OUT OF NOWHERE. 

Example: 

“How can I help you on this fine, summer day?” 

LEGIT A ONE REPLY LATER

“Look I’m sure whatever your problem is horrible but I need to finish my coffee and run off to my yoga class because my girlfriends can get so impatient so yeah toddles!” 

WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED? Where’s the context? How did this person just go from Baby Freddie to Louis Tomlinson with no development whatsoever? Do shy and innocent people talk like this? Does YOUR shy and innocent person have a reason as to why they’re talking like this? What backstory does your character have to have this switch personality? Are they bipolar? THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER because high chances are that people (mostly people like me) will be confused as hell and even higher chances are that you won’t even have the answer to my concerns. 

BUT HOLD UP YOUR HATE ANONS, I get it. Character development takes time and sometimes their personalities won’t always stay the same, it’s totally fine but the kind of change I’m talking about is WAY too fast to be called character development. And majority of the time, the opposite character has done absolutely nothing to ignite this form of behaviour. LEARN TO KEEP YOUR INNOCENT BABY AS CONSISTENT AS POSSIBLE. 

FULL STOPPING 

No I don’t mean the actual full stop. Keep doing that. This is in regards to the roleplayer’s in particular who just do not have any ideas of their own on a thread. They’re reliant on their partner to do all the work like they’re someone special. TO YOU I SAY: TSK TSK TSK *blows raspberry*. In the most mature, adult way possible, of course. 

Honestly I can’t tell you how many times my mind has made an 180 degree turn whenever I see this kind of reply. 

Example: 

“Do you think we should talk about what happened last night? Did it mean something?”

FULL STOP REPLY:

“Maybe, I don’t know,” 

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO WORK WITH THIS? What is my character supposed to do with this information? Did you give me a chance to develop the thread? Did you contribute something to the thread? No you didn’t. You’re acting like that friend in a group that comes to a party just to get alcohol and laid, STAHP THAT. 

How about something like this?

“Maybe, I don’t know, I mean I just---” AND THEN CONTINUE ON. 

It doesn’t even have to be long or more than one line but give me something I can work with like damn, don’t test me  I can easily replace our thread with a burger if it goes like this. And I don’t even like burgers that much. 

COMPETING OR BURSTING TRAGEDIES

Yep, I’m actually going there. Okay I am going to say this in the most delicate way possible but if your partner has a character that has a tragic backstory, DO NOT put it into competition with other characters. It’s so blatantly obvious when people do this but I can’t say anything more about that because it’s going to make me look like a jerk but it’s nothing subtle, I’m telling you that much. ADDITIONALLY, there’s the tragedy bursters,  let me explain this topic a bit more because I’m going into a bit of detail with this one to make my case since it’s gonna ignite a lot of problems if I don’t. 

You can spot these people because when you try and explain a few reasons as to why your character has this attitude (regardless of good or bad) or even just talk about the ship. OUT OF NOWHERE this person starts blurting out that time their character was raped/abused/or just something that I as their roleplay partner was supposed to be informed of BEFORE WE STARTED WRITING THIS THREAD. ESPECIALLY as a roleplayer who get panicked and anxious when I hear these topics because they trigger the creepers out of me WHICH by the way I have also stated SPECIFICALLY  in my rules. THE RULES YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO READ AS MY FUTURE ROLEPLAY PARTNER. 

TO ANY LOVELY HATE ANONS STILL WAITING ON ME TO SCREW UP ON THIS TOPIC, I get it. Even my characters have bad backstories like rape and abuse and others but 99.9999999999999999999999999999% I will always tell you that this happened and this was their story was like etc. etc. Or if I do end up changing their story, I will notify you if the story comes up. 

If you have a back story addition that you want to tell me about then maturely tell me as if you’re trying to give me the talk so be serious. 

BAD: 

“Oh my god they’re so cute, Mark is just so dorky right now,”

“Yeah, I’m sorry Leia’s being so grumpy, see she was abused all her life and almost got raped in her home so she doesn’t talk to men very nicely because her dad used to hit her and her mom always forced her to drink alcohol so she could please her abusive boyfriend,”  NO NO NO. HOW DO YOU KNOW I DIDN’T HAVE AN ABUSIVE BOYFRIEND THAT I’M PISS SCARED OF OR AN ALCOHOLIC MOTHER? HOW DO YOU KNOW I WASN’T RAPED OR ABUSED IN MY LIFE FOR YOU TO SO CASUALLY TELL ME THIS WITH NO WARNING? WHY AM I BEING GIVEN THIS INFORMATION RIGHT NOW FOR NO VALID REASON? I JUST SAID THEY WERE CUTE AND THAT MY IDIOTIC MUSE WAS DORKY. 

IF YOU REALLY WANT TO TELL ME SOMETHING IMPORTANT IN THE MIDDLE OF WRITING THEN TRY THIS PLEASE. 

GOOD: 

“Oh my god they’re so cute, Mark is just so dorky right now,” 

“Oh my gosh they really are, Leia is being so grumpy lol! Also I do want to let you know about a little thing about her. It’s going to be a bit heavy so let me know if you have any triggers--” 

And so on. It’s that simple and prevents triggers and problems especially if you haven’t read their rules or know them very well in the community. 

So please I do respect whatever your character has been through but it doesn’t seem very tolerable and efficient that you burst this piece of information to me when we’re just talking about how cute their argument is and I am now completely overwhelmed and SOMETIMES even feel guilt y for thinking they were cute. That’s not your fault but damn I don’t need any more emotions than I already do so help a sister out. 

And that’s it, there’s not a lot that annoys me about role playing besides the usual stuff and these little things which I really hope people will just stop doing. But yeah, if you thought this was helpful or allowed you to right some wrongs, things like that then give it a like or reblog. how-to: character conversations

There is nothing more discouraging when your character is trying to converse, but the other character keeps shutting you down or alternately, does not reciprocate.  It can be disheartening, exhausting, and no fun.  Even more importantly, it’s bad RPing. 

Examples of shut downs:

the character keeps giving negative responses

the character belittles or dismisses the other character’s thoughts, suggestions, questions, then does not add anything

the character is too shy or afraid to speak or take any action; waits for the other character to take initiative

the character challenges the other character to impress them somehow, before they decide to engage

the character refuses to engage in any way: refuses to consider ideas, shows no interest, abruptly leaves

the character will answer questions but then will offer no follow-up

there is a lot of internal exposition, but then the character only responds with a word or two

If you realize your character consistently uses a few of these tactics, you may think: “but my character is grumpy/an asshole/anti-social/really shy/scared/bitchy/a loner/hates people/has issues!  It’s natural for them to act that way!“

This might be true, but the Mun/Player does not have to write that way.  There is a difference between the Mun’s character’s personality, and the Mun’s writing. RPing is interactive and it’s a two-way street.  As a Mun, it is your responsibility to figure out how to be engaging and encouraging to your partner, regardless of your character’s personality.

Hello there! Please don’t take anything I say as a personal offence as this is merely my own view of your roleplay and you can do whatever you wish with it:

First of all, looking at your graphics I knew the atmosphere looked familiar and I turned out to be right when you stated that your theme was made by the beautiful Kris (hazstylestrash). Definitely a good choice and it makes your roleplay stand out more than any other I have seen thus far so you’ve already hooked and impressed me on that which is a good sign for attracting applicants. 

I love your plot, it’s very unique and a good twist for a celebrity roleplay because those roleplay’s are very common so creativity is highly needed and you definitely did a good job on that. Your rules are also well set out. It is a bit too long but at least you know the people who read and understand it are dedicated enough for this roleplay. 

Overall, I think you’re doing a great job keeping this roleplay properly promoted and running and if you keep that up, I can most certainly see this becoming a well known and loved roleplay. Good luck in your adventures and if you have any further questions, let me know.
