Never forget the best scene in cinema history!
I’m so crazy about this film, the director literally knew the Beatles personally and in the year 2000 he made his rpf canon compliant, slow burn, internalised homophobia, denial of feelings, sloppy makeout fanfic a reality ❤️

Let's Liberate Mary Magdalene (And All Other Women, While We're At It)
Tumblr media
In the year 591 CE, Pope Gregory I said the following in his Homily 33:
"She whom Luke calls the sinful woman, whom John calls Mary, we believe to be the Mary from whom seven demons were ejected according to Mark. And what did these seven demons signify if not all the vices? … It is clear, brothers, that this woman previously used the unguent to perfume her flesh in forbidden acts. What she therefore displayed more scandalously; she was now offering to God in a more praiseworthy manner."
Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault describes this hermeneutical gaffe by Pope Gregory I as "the slippery slope along which we moved from Mary Magdalene, apostle to the apostles, to Mary Magdalene, penitent whore." Pope Gregory was doubly incorrect in these assumptions. Firstly, Pope Gregory was conflating the woman from the Gospel of Luke chapter 7, whom Luke describes as a woman who "lived a sinful life", with Mary of Magdala, who is introduced by Luke in the very next chapter, a couple of paragraphs latter, without any association to the previous woman. The second blunder is the assumption that the "sinful life" that the chapter 7 woman is bestowed with by Luke has anything to do with sexuality.
In 1969 - that's right, nearly 1,500 years later - the Catholic Church at last conceded that the labeling of Mary the Magdalene as a prostitute was done in error. But unsurprisingly, after all that time, the damage had already been done. To this day, it is practically taken for granted in much of Christian teaching that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, rescued from a "sinful life" by Jesus, and granted forgiveness and redemption. Instead of being viewed as one of the apostolic leaders of Jesus' company and one of Jesus' closest and most trusted friends, as the Gospels actually portray her, Mary is, to this day, presented, even to young Christians, as a prostitute saved by Jesus from a wicked life of sin, essentially becoming a charity case for Jesus, used to teach people just how wicked and dirty one can be and still be forgiven and shown grace.
Not only is there not one single reference to the sexual life of Mary Magdalene in any of the Gospels, she is actually hailed as a financial supporter of Jesus' ministry via her own means, an incredibly trusted confidante to Jesus, and even given the honor by the Gospel-writer John of communicating the good news of Jesus' resurrection to the rest of the disciples who were hiding in fear after his death - the first Easter sermon!
It would be speculative to suggest that Mary was branded by the Church this way intentionally for nefarious reasons, but that speculation would be heavily supported by the behavior of the Church over the centuries. Labelling Mary as a sinner served the purpose of distancing her from the rest of Jesus' male disciples, and in a Church that has long insisted that apostolic duties are reserved exclusively for men, it is not at all unreasonable to speculate that this branding of Mary was done for the purpose of delegitimization and to support the patriarchal and unbiblical claim that women are unable to be leaders in the Church. So, it is long past time that the Church collectively repent of the great tarnishing of the reputation of Mary of Magdala and instead restore her status as a great leader in the early movement of those who followed Jesus as she is truly presented in the Gospel text.
However, it is also far beyond time to go even further. If we feel that it is important to remove the branding of Mary as a prostitute because that would somehow delegitimize her or prove that she was a "sinner", and if we breathe a sigh of relief when we learn that there is no evidence to support Mary being a prostitute, then that betrays even more of our harmful cultural feelings about women's sexuality.
Why do we feel that Mary Magdalene's status as a leader in Jesus' ministry is dependent on her sexual abstinence? Why does the Bible refer to another Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a virgin? Why does her virginal status matter in the slightest, especially when the virginal status of the father of Jesus is never mentioned, and why does the Church still maintain that Mary had to have been a virgin, even for the rest of her life after the birth of Jesus, to be "sinless"? Let's apply this requirement of virginal status to be considered "righteous" to men in the Bible. The book of 1 Kings claims that Solomon, King of Israel, had seven hundred wives and three hundred concubines. Solomon is revered in Christianity and Judaism for his great wisdom, his leadership that led to a "golden age" of prosperity, and his construction of the temple. God says to Solomon in 1 Kings, "As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart and uprightness, as David your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.'" And Solomon's righteousness only comes into question, according to the text, after "his wives turned his heart after other gods."
And speaking of David, revered in Christianity and Judaism as a "man after God's own heart" (taken out of context from 1 Samuel 13), the writer of Psalms, the great book of worship and song, and great leader of Israel. Jesus is even referred to in the Gospels as the "son of David", lifting up his lineage to King David. This is the same David who had Bathsheba's husband Uriah killed so that David could sleep with her himself.
This gross double standard still plagues women today. There is nothing more societally damning for a woman than to be known to have multiple sexual partners, or even one sexual partner who she is not married to. This grants her such virulent titles as whore, temptress, seductress, Jezebel (another biblical woman baselessly labelled a whore), and any number of other degrading terms for a woman that people can think of, while men with multiple sexual partners, or a partner they are not married to, are CEOS, visionaries, pastors, and apparently even the President of the United States.
So, let us restore Mary Magdalene's status as a great leader in the early Christian movement, a great friend and confidante to Jesus, and a fearless champion for the powerless as she is described in the text. However, let her status not be dependent on whatever sexual partners she did or did not have. For far too long, men have controlled the reputations of women via their sexuality while being free from such scrutiny of their sexuality themselves. Listen to the stories of women who, due to these phony religious and cultural stigmas around women's sexuality, grew up afraid of their own sexuality and were unable to enjoy sex even with a marriage partner. How ashamed we ought to be for subjecting women to this double standard, piling on so much shame over such a natural human experience, while men are given freedom to do as they please, often even for unhealthy and violent sexual behavior.
It is far beyond time to liberate Mary Magdalene, and all other women as well, from this patriarchal system of control over their reputations. Let the accolades and experiences of women be free from our subjective and patriarchal definitions of "purity" to which we don't subject men. These toxic standards have held women back from any true equality for far too long. No longer!
In peace and justice, Nick
