I feel like we can sympathize with sparkpelt for having PPD while also sympathizing with nightheart for being bitter over having been neglected as a child… right?
Hello. I'd like to preface this with I was emotionally, physically, and medically neglected as a child. I am not gatekeeping being neglected from this fictional cat, I'm just pointing out how it's entirely untrue. Below the cut I go through every book chronologically from the point the kits are born to examine her behavior and what happened. I am looking at the PDFs, so pages may not line up with physical copy pages.
I'd also like to note anon that I am not angry with you at all, I am just using this ask as a jumping off point. People are allowed to like Nightheart, I am examining the harm of the action of the authors.
TL:DR: The books show Sparkpelt dealing with depression after her mate dies in front of her while she has an early labor due to stress. By the end of the book, she is playing with the kits and repeatedly said to be feeding them. Later on, she is almost always mentioned to be near the kits. She is then almost murdered by her dad, watches her mom get exiled, and is in turned exiled. Her daughter, Finchpaw, chooses to go with her mom. Flamepaw doesn't. There is no textual evidence that Sparkpelt ever neglected either of them, just that she was depressed. This series is implying mentally ill women inherently neglect their children on the basis of being mentally ill by insisting Nightheart was neglected, and the fandom is believing it. I have personally seen someone imply mothers with PPD are an inherent danger to their children. This is harmful. Your fictional sad guy isn't an excuse for the ableism of this arc and the ableism of the fandom.
In chapter 17 of Squirrelflight's hope, she experiences watching her mate has a seizure in front of her. The stress of this experience sends her into early labor, mind you, while she is sick with the same thing giving Larksong a seizure. She loses one of her kits during this, presumably because of the circumstances. Larksong dies just after she gives birth. Squirrelflight makes the choice to seperate Sparkpelt from her kits because of the grief she is experiencing.
In the next chapter, while still clearly experiencing the intense grief, she gets up to feed them. She is still attempting to provide for them, she just needs the guidance of those around her because she is having trouble even taking care of herself. She is later mentioned in chapter 28 to still be attempting to feed her kits. At no point during her depression does she ever physically neglect her kits, even though she had every right to ask the other cats of her community to provide for them instead while she recovered. She is still refusing herself food during the time period she is nursing her kits.
In the next chapter, Squirrelflight tells Sparkpelt that she had seen Larksong and Flickerkit. After this, she chooses to play with the kits. It hasn't been more than a moon since she watched her mate die, but she is beginning to strive for a connection with her kits, even if she is still struggling.
(Page 218 to 219 of the PDF) Squirrelflight’s heart ached as her daughter’s eyes glistened. She wished she could make her pain go away, but she knew Sparkpelt must face it alone. Time would help, and love. She called to the kits. “Come play with your mother.” Flamekit looked at her, puzzled. “But Daisy likes playing with us. Sparkpelt just wants to sleep.” Sparkpelt sat up. “No I don’t,” she mewed earnestly. “Not anymore.” Squirrelflight pricked her ears. It was the first flash of energy her daughter had shown since Larksong’s death. She hurried to Flamekit and scooped him up by his scruff. “Hey!” Flamekit churned his paws in the air as Squirrelflight carried him across the den. “I was playing with Finchkit.” Squirrelflight dropped him in front of Sparkpelt. “Finchkit can come too.” She beckoned his sister over. Sparkpelt blinked nervously at her kits, as though she didn’t know what to do. “Here.” Stormcloud quickly tore a lump of moss from her nest and rolled it into a ball. He bowled it past the kits Flamekit leaped after it instantly, his pelt fluffing with excitement. Finchkit’s eyes rounded with determination. She lunged for the ball and knocked it away. Squirrelflight nodded to Sparkpelt. “Go on,” she encouraged. Sparkpelt hesitated, then reached out a paw and scooped the moss ball away from the kits. They turned on her, pelts prickling with indignation. “That was ours!” Finchkit told her. “Then you’d better catch it!” Sparkpelt knocked the moss ball across the den floor. Squeaking happily, Flamekit and Finchkit chased after it. Sparkpelt’s eyes glowed. She hurried after her kits and hooked the ball away again, this time tossing it high above their heads. Flamekit leaped for it, spinning as he jumped. “Great catch!” Sparkpelt mewed as he snatched the moss ball from the air. “Throw it again!” Finchkit stared eagerly at her mother. “I want to catch it too!” Sparkpelt purred and threw the moss ball high, watching proudly as Finchkit batted it away before it hit the ground. “You’re going to be great hunters,” she told them. “Can we go and practice on real prey?” Finchkit blinked at her. “Not yet.” Sparkpelt’s eyes were bright now. “But we can go outside if you like.” “It’s a perfect day for chasing leaves,” Stormcloud told her. “Outside the den?” Flamekit’s pelt bushed with excitement. Finchkit stuck her tail in the air and marched to the den entrance. “I’m going first.” “No you’re not!” Flamekit hared after and tried to barge past as she reached the opening in the brambles. Finchkit pushed him away and scrambled out of the den. “Be nice!” Purring now, Sparkpelt hurried after them. “And fluff out your fur properly! It’s chilly outside.” Stormcloud watched her go. “Do you think she’s going to be okay?” “It will take time.” Hope glimmered in Squirrelflight’s chest. “But with the help of her kits and her Clan, she’ll find a way to get over Larksong’s death.” She ducked out of the den. Flamekit and Finchkit were already chasing across the clearing as the wind whisked a leaf ahead of them. Sparkpelt bounded after them, her tail fluffed with excitement as a fresh flurry of leaves showered down and the kits leaped for them, squealing with delight.
She doesn't really do anything for the rest of this book of note. However, it is clearly shown in canon that these kits were being cared for, even if Sparkpelt was emotionally distant. What about the next one?
She's mentioned a total of 9 times in Lost Stars, but almost every instance she is sitting watching her and Sorrelstripe's kits.
In The Silent Thaw, she is berated by Bramblefake for caring about her cousin Lionblaze. While the books do not explicitly mention anything, it must be very hard to watch your family members being driven out so soon after the death of multiple family members (Larksong, Flickerkit, and Leafpool.) Here's what happens next.
(Page 305 of the PDF) Sparkpelt seemed suddenly small as she blinked at Bramblestar. “Don’t banish me too,” she mewed quietly. “I can’t leave my Clan, and my kits are still only apprentices. They need me.”
She's very clearly been able to at least care about her kits since the death of Larksong. You could argue that she's using her kits to not get banished, but she is still publicly showing care for their wellbeing. We later learn that Sparkpelt had been attacked, alone, by dogs. Though she doesn't know, her own father (or what everyone thought was her father) tried to murder her. Her mother is then exiled from the clan.
Almost all of her mentions in early Veil of Shadows are how Bramblefake tried to get her murdered. Then, she is exiled for questioning Bramblefake.
(Page 341 to 454 of the PDF) he hissed at Sparkpelt. “Cats who did not trust their leaders! But not anymore. Sparkpelt, you are no longer a ThunderClan cat. You are exiled!” Sparkpelt’s eyes widened in dismay, but before she could respond, a scratchy voice piped up. “A good warrior doesn’t follow their leader off a cliff.” Bristlefrost turned to see Graystripe stepping forward through the ring of cats who surrounded Bramblestar and Sparkpelt. “A good leader doesn’t expect blind loyalty,” he continued. “Firestar certainly never led like that. And neither did you, Bramblestar— not before you lost a life. Only a weak leader demands obedience at any cost. Only a—” He broke off as Bramblestar flashed out a paw and raked him across the nose, leaving a long bloody scratch. A gasp rose up from the surrounding warriors. Almost at once Graystripe recovered, drawing himself up so that Bristlefrost could imagine the formidable warrior he had once been. “Bramblestar would never have hurt his own warrior,” he meowed. “I don’t know who you are … but you’re not our leader!” Bristlefrost was amazed at how close the elder had come to the truth. Surely every cat must see how wise he is! “If you believe that,” Bramblestar snapped at Graystripe, “then you can leave with Sparkpelt.” With a glance at the assembled crowd, he added, “And so can any other cat who doesn’t understand loyalty.” Blossomfall hesitated before padding forward to stand beside her father, Graystripe. Her brother, Bumblestripe, followed her, and a heartbeat later Cinderheart joined them, along with her apprentice, Finchpaw. Sparkpelt looked at her kit and nodded silently. Bristlefrost saw her own parents, Ivypool and Fernsong, exchange a glance and a few quick words. Ivypool’s paws twitched, and for a moment it seemed like she would walk out, but then she shot a concerned look toward Bristlefrost and Flipclaw. They won’t leave without us, Bristlefrost realized. And even if Flipclaw wants to go, the Clan needs him. Then to her amazement her sister, Thriftear, padded up to their parents, gave each of them a quick nuzzle, and joined the cats who were leaving. She shot a swift glance at Bristlefrost, then immediately looked away. The group of exiled cats headed across the camp toward the thorn tunnel, without another word to Bramblestar. Bristlefrost remembered Tigerstar’s words at the Gathering. At this rate, there’ll be more ThunderClan cats wandering the forest than in your camp. “Go then, filthy mange-pelts!” the impostor yowled. “Get out and don’t come crawling back!” Whirling around, he faced the warriors who remained. “Remember that I expect loyalty,” he snarled. “And if any cat knows that a Clanmate is not loyal … come and see me.”
Flamepaw chooses not to go with his mother. Almost the entire clan was there, and Finchpaw choose to, but Flamepaw doesn't. The rest of the series Sparkpelt is shown to be worrying about her mom, which is fair considering her obsessive body snatching ex is keeping her trapped in hell.
In Daisy's Kin, this happens.
(Page 20 of the PDF) As they headed out of camp, Daisy spotted Sparkpelt’s kits, Flamepaw and Finchpaw, bounding eagerly up to their mentors. “They’re so strong and capable,” she murmured to herself. “It won’t be long before they have their warrior ceremony.” “It’s partly because of you that they’ve grown up so well,” Mousewhisker told her, touching his nose to her ear. “You took such good care of them when they were in the nursery.” Daisy’s heart clenched as she remembered how she had helped Sparkpelt when she was struggling after kitting, licking the two little scraps of fur, one black and one tortoiseshell, until they could snuggle into their mother’s fur and start feeding. Now the two apprentices barely seemed to notice her. As their mentors led them out of camp, they strode eagerly behind, strong and capable. I was needed then, but it feels so long ago, Daisy thought. Will I ever have a purpose in ThunderClan again?
Daisy explicitly mentions how at some point, Sparkpelt did take over, to the point the apprentices no longer look to Daisy for comfort. According to the books, she was feeding her kits within the same moon their mate died. It has been stated over and over that she was taking care of her kits, even if she was dealing with the depression of losing people and having trouble connecting with them.
And what's the next book? The book where Nightheart is whining about how his mom never loved him.
This isn't neglect. This is nothing whatsoever like neglect. Sparkpelt is stated over, and over, and over to have started taking care of them, is shown to begin trying to bond with them, and when she is kicked out it is Nightheart that is the one that abandons her.
So no. You can't sympathize with a character who was never neglected but still blames his mom because she's mentally ill and that wasn't good enough for him. Please actually take a moment to step back and examine how the choice of the authors to portray her as the villain for her mental illness is dangerous and harmful. People in this fandom have already started to imply women with PPD are an inherent danger to their children and it's fucking disgusting. Do not use babying a fictional character as an excuse not to examine the real harm of this.

Does Leafstar and the rest of the Skyclan gang know that Leafpool and Squirrelflight are the daughters of Firestar?
How would they react????
Now I'm just thinking about how in Squirrelfights Hope
Squirrel could have been just like: My father would never stand for this mistreatment of these cats.
Leafstar: oh who is your father?
Squirrel: Ehhh you didn't know him
Leafstar: I'm still curious.
Squirrel: His name was Firestar

My favorite thing is how in the prologue of Bramblestar's Storm firestar was so excited to be able to give his first prophecy. Only to be pissed off about how vague the prophecy is.
