Dissection was formed by Jon Nödtveidt in the autumn of 1989 with Peter Palmdahl on bass and Ole Öhman on drums. Jon was responsible for vocals and guitar. Their influences were the current Death Metal and Black Metal underground scene.

Dissection recorded their first release in 1990, a tape called "Severing Into Shreds". Their first demo tape was recorded the same year, called "The Grief Prophecy". Also, in early 1991, a few days after the suicide of Pelle Ohlin, they made a tribute to Mayhem, playing "The Freezing Moon" on a show in Falkenberg.
